Questions regarding bartholomew's knife

Would really like to get this knife but had some questions regarding on how to obtain it, from what i've read it involves trading a buccaneer's knife to a ??? in the same room after Brigandish Blade is killed, now what id like to know is :

- Do i have to be in the same group/alliance that killed the NM in order to trade?
- Does one person trading have any affect on others also trying to get the knife?

Basically i want to know if i can just loiter in the area and attempt to get the knife by trading it after other groups have killed the NM, and whether this would cause any inconvenience for them.

(oh and i dont have a sky shell yet cause my play times are very erratic in the summer, so thats out of the option for now)
 
Just need to trade a Buccaneer's knife to the "???" in the palace. You can be solo, and the NM doesn't need to be involved at all. Bare in mind though, that the chance of getting B.Knife is fairly low, and you lose the knife regardless.

I used to do that, it doesn't work, it just says "Nothing Happens" and I still keep my knife.

I also tried the "trade knife to me after NM dies" method from the wielder of the knife who killed the NM, that didn't work either.

Ultimately I got it when I popped the NM as NIN/THF, stole the knife, went to CHECK on the "???" then I kill the NM, and trade it to the ??? again (quicky) to get my knife. 1/3 on it in the end. The failed attempts lead me to keeping the knife, for some odd reason, although in those attempts I never bothered checking the ??? initially for the message. Perhaps there's some link somewhere?
 
I was pretty sure that was how my THF friend got his. Out hunting Curtanas solo, traded to that "???" by Brigandish Blade and boom.
 
You have to do it within a certain amount of time after the NM dies or 'Nothing Happens' is all you get. I forget the timeframe, but its incredibly short.

I can't say whether you have to be in the alliance or not, but you have to do it within a certain time after the NM dies. And you do NOT lose the knife. You can keep trying with the same knife every time after the NM dies. But you can only trade once everytime the NM dies.
 
Can the Bartholomew's knife kill the NM too, or only the buccaneer's?

Supposed to only be buccaneers. But I've seen a rdm with enspell kill it before, and then later the same rdm was unable to do so. Might be some kind of glitch that sometimes lets any add effect kill it >.>

Just out of curiosity, but why do you want the knife? Aren't there better knifes that are easier to come by out there?
 
for thiefs yes, but i play a dancer mainly and the selection of daggers available is quite limited. For straight damage this dagger pales in comparison to others, but for mobs with very high physical defense but weak to magic i think this is by far the best a dancer can get. I would probably be using it against slimes and elementals, from what i understand its like a kinda gimp sirocco kukri, how i wish i could equip a sirocco, quite frustrating considering dancers can equip all types of kurkis except for that one.

if there are suggestions for other daggers that fit this situation please let me know!

Don't be sorry most of us try to forget about DNC on a daily basis...if only we where blessed with your short term memory...or maybe if I just stopped lfp for jobs pre 60 it would go away /cry
