Meh, somehow I oopsed and set it as my default for pretty much any media file. Anyone know how to turn that crap off? I had a program for picture files, one for video and iTunes for audio of course. Now it's all set to quicktime.

Open My Computer (or any folder)
go to Tools » Folder Options
go to File Types
find your extensions that were changed, and Edit them - you can pick any program to open them

There's probably some way to do this within the Quicktime options, but it's variable whether that will restore your previous default programs or not.

If you have XPSP2 then there's also something in the start menu called "Program Access and Defaults" which is a little more user-friendly way to access the File Types above.

oh shit, yeah thanks for covering that Fly. I was gonna reply last night but was too busy in my party ><.

Quicktime is a good player but it doesn't understand too many video formats, so yeah it's not the best choice for the default player on the PC. Quicktime Pro is actually a professional tool for Digital animators, for making self contained movies out of image files, before it goes off to editing.

Personally I hate Quicktime with a passion. The real app always manages to worm itself into every aspect of my old PC. Hell, once it decided, on a whim, to set itself as the default flash player. And look, according to the settings it wasn't supposed to open anything but quicktime files. (and yes, there was the latest version on flash on that pc). Nothing I did in any settings would stick, and it would go back to being an ass. So I used to just say "fuck it" and uninstall it. Now, Quicktime Alternative. All the occasional usefulness of Quicktime, none of the player and any of its baggage. Not for everyone, but good for some.
