Ok this is mostly towards other parents but feel free to join in with your opinion even if you don't have kids. A few weeks back my wife heard our little girl singing a song by some rapper called "smack that". Now I may not be a perfect parent but I don't think that kind of music is apropriate for my 6 year old to be listening to. She doesn't listen to it at home or at any time with us. We told her that we didn't want her listening to that radio station at school anymore and that she needs to tell her teacher not to play that radio station anymore.

Moving forward, now she's singing the "party like a rock star" song. Not that horrible of a song but still inapropriate for a large corporation daycare to be playing in the presence of my little girl. Now this happend last night so I'm asking... am I wrong to go to the director of the location myself and request that radio station not be played any more? I mean I know it plays worse songs than the two I mensioned and it really bothers me.

I feel like kids need to be listening to disney music or fun poppy music. Not so much all of it has to be kiddy cornie music. I'm a huge music lover so I'm very broad in my taste and knowledge of songs. We have songs we like that don't involve sex, crime, drugs, and partying. I don't see why they would think that its "ok".

That is totally understandable how you feel. I don't have children, but I look at younger members of my family in daycare or in school and am rather suprised on how much has changed versus when I was their age. When I was 6 I was rocking out to Disney. Righteous!!! \m/ I do agree with you that the music isn't appropriate.

On a side note, I am also suprised at some of the toys they have out young children now a days, mostly girls. I'm looking at you Bratz >_> Honestly, what is their target audience? They look like little hussies and the girls in the commericals look that way too :P I used to play with Barbies but at least they came with like dresses and pants that convered them. Now, you have these like 10 year old girl dolls that have breasts like a 20 year old and huge DSLs >_>;

Seems like target media for girls is trying to give the impression that they should grow up faster. I didn't mean to get off topic but just another example of what I don't think is exactly appropriate for young children ;(

Even though I'm not a parent, I agree with you.

Kids shouldn't listen to music with sex, partying, drugs etc.

But to be honest, that kinda stuff is almost always associated with rap and trashy pop now, it used to be rock with the likes of Aerosmith, and it still is rock in a way, just not as much as rap (More like crap to me =/) now.

Anyways, it should be the teachers responsibility what kids listen to if they have a radio in class. When I was doing my art exams 2 years ago, I stayed after school to continue with the work so I could finish it sooner, my old art teacher played classical music on the radio in class.

The new art teacher, plays rock when the 6th formers are in class, either way, it was fine because 1) The class was old enough (16-18 year olds), and 2) It was the responsibility of the teacher on what we listened to, and both times, the music didn't have any swearing, sex, drug, and partying references in it, which would be acceptable for kids.

However, my parents would probably be furious at my teachers if they had put music with those references on the radio in class. They'd probably inform the head master/principle of what was going on for the appropriate action needed.

Oh, yeah, question, does the radio station the music that was played on have censors?

Anyway, my point in the end of that all is, the head master/principle/whatever of the daycare should be informed of what the teacher is doing, that way the teacher can get a warning on what the kids listen to.

Edit: oh yeah, I forgot about those plastic slut dolls that pass for kid toys @_@ And not forgetting some places that are too laid back on age ratings on games in some stores and who the game is being sold to, same can be said with movies too.

I don't think you're wrong at all. I don't have my own kids, but I have nieces that go to day care (3 and 6) and I can tell you that my sister-in-law would foam at the mouth if she heard her daughter break out into "Smack That." There's a time and a place for that kind of music, and day care isn't remotely on that list. You have every right to complain, you should complain, and you should demand that whoever made the choice to play that crap to kids so young be held accountable. People like that don't belong in positions like these. And when kids are so impressionable at day care age, somehow "I'm sorry" just doesn't cut it.

well according to the director, they aren't supposed to be playing any music on the buss and in the room they are only allowed to put it on the Disney station. so i ask my 6yr old if they listened to the radio on the buss today and she goes "Yes" and started singing some rap song :/ i inform the director of this and all i get is a "I'll have a talk with the teachers about this". so i guess we will see if they listen :/

On the positive side, you can be pretty sure she doesn't understand the lyrics she was singing, if she's only 6. I agree with you that a day care employee should not be subjecting their charges to that kind of music.

Here's a hint for when she gets a little bit older and starts to understand and enjoy such music: tell her she can have any CD she wants, as long as she recites the lyrics to you and her other parent and discuss what they mean.

Explaining to my parents that "you ain't nothin but a slut to me" was meant satirically as a castigation of the rap genre didn't make them like Eminem, but it assured them that I wasn't becoming a misogynist pig.
