(I was first a Warrior, but at lv 15 I switched to Red Mage so I could melee and be able to take care of my own ass in case a PT starts bombing and gets me killed.)

A Red Mage's job is to melee with a sword, with best armor possible, while casting enfeebling spells, correct? Maybe be backup healer in case WHMs MP runs out, or perhaps to get in an extra monster for an EXP Chain?

Well, unless the pt already has someone to heal (pretty much any mage with whm main or sub -_-), I, the RDM / WHM, am usually called upon to be the main healer.

WTF!?

Why the hell does everybody seem to think that an Elvaan Red Mage / White Mage can do any good as main healer??? The PT would have to reast after every single fight, and not only that, but you wouldnt be able to enfeeble at ALL. Hate getting invites and having to screen all of them, because they dont have WHMs. Though I have been able to lead more than a few parties without WHMs to good EXP, some are just a bit too much. I mean pts that would have every member have whm or rdm sub. For cure. Cant even ask if they have a WHM, as Ive been lied to before.

Kyozabi>> got a WHM...?
SomeguywhosenameIforgot>> yea

*joins PT*

*checks member list before even saying hi*
(I forgot exactly what the list was, but it was like...)

MNK / WHM
WAR
THF / WHM
WAR / WHM
RDM / WHM (me)
BLM / WHM

Something like that I remember... But it at least equaled that in WTFery...

I asked about the pt setup and the leader (who used a lot of dumb slang, like u and r) said that theyve been doing fine healing... and wanted me to hang back and heal with the nuker...

Thats just one of the dozens upon dozens of "Do you wanna be main healer?" invites as a RDM.... even before I got a sub job... glad I got that shit to 30 quick (as they seem to have these invites at every level in every area -_-) so now im NIN / WAR till I get samurai...

Please... if you plan on leveling up, and having a good reputation in FFXI...

Do not, ever, ask a Red Mage to be the main healer. I swear to fucking god, I will track you down, and kill you.

All others who were RDMs, share your stories, and please...

Name names. My blist needs to know of these pricks.

(and to those who are guilty of the brainless crime of asking RDMs to be main healer, please use your newfound knowledge of the situation to never do this again. and fall in a bottomless pit with spikes on the sides. after being given the ability to feel pain without ever dying.)

<please> <Thank you.>[/u]

This is funny shit.

Id advise you to quit RDM right now. You *will* not be happy with it as you level higher.

From level 70-75 I never had a Whitemage in my static PT. Our RDM, Metix was an awesome healer, enfeebler, refresher and MBer (new word). She was damn busy.

Static PT consited of SAM, RDM, BLM, BRD, tank, DD.

The point is, RDMs can be excellent healers at higher levels.

If you dont like healing... stop being a rdm. thanks to dumbass noob partys i was main healer all the way through kazham it finally stoped at garlaige where i actually learned SOME skills. but eveen as a lvel 55 rdm, i still main heal occasionally why? because when you have a blink tank a whm is almost a wasted class unless something goes wrong...really really wrong. with me, the rdm, i can sing my 2 songs (/brd sub, 1 for melee 1 for magic users) enfeeble, MB, refresh, and heal now and then (if there a ninja that has NEVER taken a hit, they are lying,) then i kneel down near the end of a fight with me dark staff and rest that mp up. also, after leveling, i have time to join the melee and recap my sword skills, (i want vorpal blade!!!! its not fair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant wait till savage blade  )

I don't beleive that a RDM should be main healer (having to cast enfeebles, Cures, Refresh, and such can wiegh down on your mp) but sometimes it's a nessisary evil. If there's a BRD in the party I'll be main healer, all it means is I won't be able to melee, because a BRD can help keep my MP pretty high. Same as a two RDM party.

It can be done, I don't nessisarily LIKE it, but sometimes we just have to do it.

Honestly, RDM can be just as capable, if not more capable in some cases, then a WHM

dare i even say anything......
Actually at newb places like Valkrum i find it easier 2 chain without a whm cause you dont have 2 wait for them to get mp back and since when i was a newb and didn't like 2 be main curer now my healing magic is lacking ><

In most instances ill agree with armi if theres a bard I can enfeeble refresh and cure while if things really bad the bard can throw out a curaga here and there ^^

Err, i just meant to say all that stuff. Im past that now, gonna main NIN / SAM (dont bother criticizing, my mind's made up) dont need to be RDM ever again, till Sam quest.

LOL. Are you going to spam the awesome katana WS???

Err... RDM is the filler job. I've been the main healer. I've been the main nuker. I've always been the primary enfeebler and refresher. (I would pass off Dia II and Bio II to a WHM/BLM to save MP for healing though.)

All depends on the situation. If you don't want to have to adjust, RDM isn't the job for you...

<word> <up>

I've been in a ton of PT's with no WHM what so ever.. RDM's fill the spot perfectly especially if paired with a bard. I've also been in PT's where the RDM was booted for meleeing when we had ample DD's.

i melee when i want to, and i want to melee when i level up to caps me skills, i still get all my work done.... but that ends up to only about 5-10 swings at the monster a fight ; ;

This combo seems fitting for you. It will be about as useful to a group as you would have been playing a RDM that ignores main parts of his job.

Good luck

Yay Jasper    I get yelled at for telling rdm to be out of melee ALL the time. I love other people that will boot them for it ^^ /hurray

I'm a RDM, and i don't like it when i have to be main healer for a few reasons. However, if i'm stuck being the main healer i do it my way.

I'd drop Paralyze blind slow, and maybe touch it up with gravity depending on the situation. But always will i cast an enspell and melee as i am the main healer.

Me being a Tarutaru RDM i can usually last 10 minutes before i need to convert. But when being a main healer i'll rest inbetween battles.

----So the downside to a RDM being main healer is.----

! Slower prouduction in terms of exsperience gain. !

* RDM is not ment to blow away too much of their MP at once, when not main healing the RDM can ensure a more stable refresh cycle.

Definatly be able to maintain a never ending cycle of "Haste" for melee, the way it was meant to be used ( Honestly it's not that much faster, but when used as a cycle in for a very long stretch,it's time ripping. )

Again as a Tarutaru RDM i have a rather large mana pool, but if i have 4 mana users in the party. Then i'd like to have a WHM assist in the hasting process, other words i'd end up on my ass. And loose some the party's emergency TP. 2 minutes before Convert is ready.

I would go on about it. And main healing is easy but noit all the time.

Curaga is what makes WHM King if healing, and there are time when the party is getting hammered from many ends and the RDM finds himself casting Cure IV's one at a time, while the mob starts doing some other aoe bringing great danger to the party. Of coarse this is a rare occurance.

In terms of personal preferance i love a party with a Good WHM with a firm understanding on how to colaberate with the RDM.

So the bottom line is. A party with a RDM main healing is ok. But it makes for a very gimped exserience intake. with more downtime. and the RDM may get haggled for not doing other things, either on time or at all.

You don't understand RDM very well. maybe if they wen't called Mages you would't think for them to stad back.

RDM has high resistance against magic and physical attacks. their armor is heavy, and they share weapons that PLDs DRKs WARs and a few other Melee class's use.

Does this suprise you Naffenu ?

Also with Enspells RDM will do additional damage ontop of the low damage they do with melee which makes it even enough to add up to a faster kill. ( just look for RDM's additional effect in the transcripts, so many people either don't know this or can't add.

Oh and Phalanx you know what this does and how long it lasts right ?
What do you think would happen if a RDM subbed warrior hm ? tank ? It's in the official guide and due to people telling RDM no, or you shouldn't. this is why you don't see any RDM holding arggro. i have done it before, and if i had voke it would make for me not having to nuke like hell.....

{{{RDM Can Melee as they please.}}}.

And don't take it to heart if they are surviving battle after battle. No reason to try to shape what would slaughter you in ballasta due to Godly advantages . Is there ?

^^^^^
I say as long as the RDM does what they are supposed to do and not neglect their responibilities I have no IDEA why anyone would agrue that they shouldn't melee if they have nothing else to do.

However, people like it when things are done their way, heaven forbid anyone try anything outside their box.

most people like it to go their way because of the earlier FF's, you had total control over every party member

In FFXI, some forget that there is other people controlling other characters, so they tend to make you do stuff that you really don't want to do

My advise, if you don't want to be main healer as RDM, i suggest first of all, sub BLM, secondly, if the leader wants you to be main healer, and you don't want to, drop out of the party, a party invite isn't rare as a RDM.

This is ignorance. There are other posts in general discussion that break it down for you. RDM in melee does not make sense, when mana spent over time is factored in. This mana is much better put to use nuking, debuffing, or healing. Instead, you waste it casting En-Spells and self-only buffs so that you can deal 100 damage per fight.

Yawn. RDMs who dont really understand their jobs telling people that they dont understand RDM is getting tired. Go do some reading and parsing before you bring out your all-knowingness of the RDM job.

Im disapointed with myself. I need to do this better: My comments in RED.

You don't understand RDM very well. maybe if they wen't called Mages you would't think for them to stad back.

Um... and if birds wernt called birds, we wouldnt think for them to fly? Red Mages are.... mages... Its not only in the name, but well... ill explain more as we proceed.

RDM has high resistance against magic and physical attacks. their armor is heavy, and they share weapons that PLDs DRKs WARs and a few other Melee class's use.

They have high resistance? In which world? "Im on drugs land?" Your magic resistance is governed by your MND and INT mostly, and RDM have average MND and INT. Physical defense is based on VIT and Defense.. lets see... RDM has below average VIT, and they can wear what you call 'Heavy Armor'. Hey... sorry to burst your bubble, but Scale is not 'heavy' by any means, and its the best a RDM can wear. No Chain. No plate. And guess what else? There is no scale male with good stat bonuses for a mage job. So the 'heavier' your armor gets, the worse you get at your job.

You sharing weapons with other jobs is moot, because there are 3 real factors in how well you melee. A.) is STR, B.) is DEX. RDM has below average growth in both of these stats. C.) is the skill cap of your weapon. RDM's best weapons have a B+ skillcap. This cap is the most important part of the accuracy equiasion, and with a B+, you get to miss a lot... unles you equip a healthy ammount of +Accuracy and melee stats.. which again is the opposite of what your job really needs for what it does best.

This "point" is now destroyed.

Does this suprise you Naffenu ?

Also with Enspells RDM will do additional damage ontop of the low damage they do with melee which makes it even enough to add up to a faster kill.

No. This is ignorant. For an enspell to do damage, you weapon must hit the monster. For that to happen often enough for this to 'add up', you would need to cast a lot less and equip more melee heavy gear. Then you would just be a melee that deals crap damage with a little more crap damage on top. The en-spell and self-buff mana is better spent on a nuke, that *will* do at least 2x the damage your melee could in a fraction of the time. (if you are equiped properly, which Im betting you arnt).

( just look for RDM's additional effect in the transcripts, so many people either don't know this or can't add.

Its easy to claim that you can 'add' when the only thing you care about is how much melee damage you did. If you knew anything about FFXI, you would know that the REAL damage is from nuking. You may have forgotten to factor the cost of meleeing in when comparing the potential damage-per-mana to standing back and being a mage.

Holy shit. You are taking the Bradey Guide seriously? For SHAME. If ever I wanted an example of how not to write a guide.. that guide would be it. I have both versions of it, and most of the information in it either pure database or complete shit.

You are telling me that it would be better for your party to waste mana on self buffs so that you can deal shit damage safely? Rather than spending that on nukes, heals, and debuffs? (The things your job is actually good at?) RDM is NOT a jack-of-all-trades. He is a mage. A red one. And if you dont know that now, cry as your melee damage/skill rapidly deminishes past lv30.

The MATH does not allow you to be a worthwhile melee in an xp party vs VT+ monsters. I'm sorry that you didnt read up on your job.

{{{RDM Can Melee as they please.}}}.

And don't take it to heart if they are surviving battle after battle. No reason to try to shape what would slaughter you in ballasta due to Godly advantages . Is there

Ballista is not an XP party, you tard. Melee all you want, but never call yourself an expert RDM when you cant even research the fact that being in the front lines doesnt make any sense.

Why does the majority of our server insist on knowing nothing, yet pretending to know all?

Call me a nerd or a loser if you want, but at least I do my reading, adding, and know what the hell I'm talking about.

Good day, sir.

Rdms are just totally gimped until they get Refresh and convert. Not melee enough to be melee, not healer enough to be a truly effective primary healer, not strong enough to be a truly effective nuker. Rdms are kinda like a brd: they are support; they do damage in top of a blm, they heal as a second to a whm, the melee as a second to a DD. The ballgame completely changes w/ convert and refresh though. I think it is TOTALLY worth it to suffer all the crap till you get refresh and convert. As a 49 drk, I LOVE rdms in pts now whereas before, they were second class mages. RDMS take heart: stick with it, and one day you'll becaome invaluable.
