Re: Permissions Issues
Since I've mentioned this a few times, I thought I better make a general post about it....
vbulletin, the forum software we use, has a very intricate and powerful permissions system but it can pretty tricky to set up the correct permissions when you have a board with as many forums and as many usergroups as QCDN.
Right now we have something close to a dozen different groups for regular users, five groups for moderators and 110 groups for linkshell forums.
Ideally, this is how it should work.
Main Group: Regular User
Secondary Group: Premium Member
Secondary Group: Linkshell X member
Secondary Group: blah blah blah
Regular User would have 99% of the basic permissions. Each secondary group would "add-on" to those basic permissions as needed. This way, if something needs to be changed, like seeing rep comments, it only needs to be done to the regular user group.
Unfortunately, its not quite set up like that at the moment. Its how I got the forum but its cool, its a mistake many admins (including myself) have made.
I need to fix it but its a little confusing because the groups are not exactly descriptive and if I make any changes, its possible some of you may loose access to certain forums, etc. Nothing that can't be fixed, just somethings that may irrate many of you.
I will be taking a few days off of work to help finish this and some other projects for the site. I'll give you a heads up when I do so if you have any problems you can let me know. I think it will be a smooth process though.
Thanks,
- John
