when i named him firefoot i said to myself "wow wouldnt it be perfect if he came out red?"

These days I wait until Day 19 and confirm the color before I name them. Just a lot easier that way.

How can you tell? I've done a fair amount of reading on choco breeding so that i hopefully won't create an awful one and it seemed pretty unanimous that there was no way to predict colour and no idea what effects different eggs have. Unless you bred with a red mother? Apparently that has a V high rate of passing on.

Also how can you tell at day 19?

There's no way to confirm the color from the egg or when the chocobo is a baby. At day 19, it grows into a young adult. The tips of it's feathers will let you know what color it is most likely to turn out when it grows up at day 29.

Ah see i read that even if the tips go a colour there is still a low chance of it being a coloured choco.

Sidenote: What does it mean if the tips are coloured as a baby since my bros choco has had red tips on it's tail feathers since it hatched.

Bingo. Red mother and red father, hence the red chick. Breeding is pretty much the only way to be sure. Purchased/won eggs are wildcards.
