Netflix is cheaper than that. If you use netflix you can get 2 dvd's out at once, for 14.99. And you can send them back and get new ones in about 2 days.. That's depending on the warehouse the dvd you want is in. Usually it's 2 days after you send it out. Red Box is useful, in that it's only a dollar to watch a certain movie. then you take it back, and no harm done. The big money is the stuff they make from the people who turn the DVD in late. Also, Red Box is fairly limited. They usually only have really new releases from my experience. they may have 600 slots, but I've never actually seen a red box with 60 movie options.

But seriously? The people who own Red Box buy the movies themselves. Then they rent them out to people. Then if you don't give the movie back, your credit card is charged for the amount of the movie. They don't have any right imo to put that kind of pressure on Red Box. They get the money from the DVD anyway. It's just different than Netflix. I'm sure there are tons of Video Stores that don't give the movie studios part of their profits. I can think of two or three that I know of off hand.

I remember hearing a few years back about a DVD technology that pretty much allowed the disc to destroy itself (or rather, make itself unreadable) after a certain period.
I'd like to see Redbox use that, if it's become affordable since then.
Not really on-topic, but it's something I've always thought about.

Ive seen DVD's that become no longer readable after a few playbacks and only cost like $5 at local convenience stores and such.

I agree Orinna, Netflix is cheaper, but not everyone wants to wait for a movie to come in the mail, and find it more convenient to walk or drive to the Wal-Mart or McDonalds around the corner to rent a movie.........I think its a pretty douchey move on the studio's part, so I seriously hope the public responds in some way to teach them a lesson.

Netflix is only cheaper if you find yourself renting(and watching) more than 15 DVDs a month. If you're doing less, Redbox is cheaper. They offer a good price point for people who'll only occasionally want to rent a flick. As well, not many people have the time to watch a DVD every other day.

Not to mention Redbox doesnt intentionally slow delivery when you return videos too quickly which is why i stopped using netflix... when i first got them i would have a new movie within a day then it went to 4 or 5 days to turn around so i canceled.

Well that's assuming that you watch and return the DVD within a day, since they charge another $1 per day that you keep the DVD. You also have to take gas into consideration since you're making a trip out to pick up and return the DVD, unless you literally only use Redbox at some store you were planning to visit anyway. But since you're having to return the DVD within a day for the $1 rental, I'd imagine you don't need to visit the same location twice within a day unless you're a bad shopper, lol.

I literally have 3 Redboxes within a 5 minute walking distance. That I know of, anyway. Fuck if I know how many would be within a 5 minute driving distance.

Wow, their website displays only up to 10 locations, and I get that nailed on the bare minimum 5 mile radius easy.

Yeah, same here, theres a redbox at every mcdonalds, walmart, and convenience store within a 5 minute walking distance (total of 10 locations) so I dont really have to waste gas, and if I dont feel like walkin, Ill just take the bike or something LOL

A year ago I was literally watching 2 dvd's ever single day because I worked from home. I used netflix and never had a problem with them. When I heard about Red Box I utilized it between Netflix shipments. It worked out well using both if I couldn't find anything interesting to watch on Hulu. (I didn't have Cable.) They are both useful.

I don't even know where there is a red box close to here.

McDonald's off exit 4 and that Walgreens off exit 1, lol.

Yes, you can walk, but I'm going to assume in general that most people are lazy and wouldn't bother walking. Even still you only get the DVD for a day for $1 and most people are likely to keep it longer than a single day if they have to be inconvenienced to return it.

i use both. i use netflix on my 360 and have over 300 movies in my queue and if i feel like gettin the kids somethin to watch, i hit the redbox at work and grab something.
