Probrably the weakest part of my gear that I wish to improve I've heard of some good combos made with mp+ and hp+ gear to increase the mp while keeping a good ratio but most of my gear is hp- and mp+ which isn't bad considering my race but I'd like to expand on it and improve it and I'd like to know where to start or if someone has a setup I can look off of to use.

Any race welcome but looking for mostly elvaan red mages although I'd think that if you're using mp+ and hp+ gear for convert it should pan out to be better.

thanks ahead of time

To Left is my current Setup. To Right is most Optimal Setup I've found thus far for Taru Red Mage.

Preferred Food: Coffeecake/Cherrycake Muffin +1/Marron Glace

Head: Fourth Division Mace
Sub: Numinous Shield (Numinous Shield +1/Legion Scutum)
Ammo : Phantom Tathlum (Hedgehog Bomb)
Head: Silken Hat (Walahra Turban)
Neck: Bloodbead Amulet (Beak Necklace +1)
Ear1: Insomnia Earring (Loquacious Earring)
Ear2: Antivenom Earring (Insomnia Earring)
Body: Magi Coat (HQ Silken) (Goliard Saio)
Hands: Cobra Unit Gloves (Dragon Kote)
Ring1: Ebullient Ring
Ring2: Mana Ring (Bomb Queen Ring)
Back: Intensifying Cape
Waist: Powerful Rope (Hierarch Belt)
Legs: Prince's Slops
Feet: Duelist's Boots (Cobra Unit Crackows)

The current setup puts me at 1103 HP / 1103 MP including +85 MP from food (No HP/MP Merits). The Optimal setup comes out to around 1257 HP / 1262 MP Assuming 5 HP Merits and 3 MP Merits and +85 MP from Food.

Did some messing around but I can't find a setup for Elvaan breaking 1200 hp/mp, so you'd have to ask someone else about their setup. From the Optimal setup, switching Turban to Faerie Hairpin, Kote to Zenith Mitts, Neck to Morgana Choker and Rings to Serket/Carect or Zoredonite would put you around 1186 HP / 1173 MP (Assuming 8 MP merits and +85 MP food). However, not too sure on food, so switching Carect/Zoredonite to Ether and eating Rolanberry pie + 1 puts you around 1156 HP / 1158 MP as the best I can figure.

If you're not looking to go gear crazy and push the absolute optimum, go about it with this thought in mind: as much MP+ gear as you can get, even if that means using some HP > MP (zenith, most equipment with "Astral" in the name, Serket's Ring, Vivian's Ring, etc...). The name of the game for me is to have balanced HP/MP.

Something Taru's have almost naturally as a RDM, making it easier for them to find ways to just push both up. As a hume, that's what I do. If I can't find good MP+ I try to fill in to balance them out. Goliard body and feet are a good way to push both up as you may want Astral rings, zenith legs and head (if not hands as well, especially for an Elvaan). Currently I still around 930-950 depending on subjob.

Actually, most of our RDM gear has +MP (or +MP -HP) which can make it a little harder for Tarus to reach 1:1. For everyone else, +MP gear will do the job, but for the little people, they may need some straight HP gear...

As you can see above, it's really not that hard using Campaign/AH Gear. Yes, Pure HP is needed in some spots but most of it is HP+ and MP+ - the Silken Set, Fourth Division Mace along with Assault items and Cobra Unit Gear were definite boosts for Taru Red Mages in achieving 1:1 Convert ratios. There may be fewer options but they do exist if you're diligent about it.

EDIT: The real problem with getting high convert ratio as a taru is having to cure before converting, which can be troublesome if mp is tapped >.<

I would say it's easier for a Taru to reach 1:1, largely owing to the fact that their HP:MP ratio leans that way to begin with and because HP gear is not as large a hassle to get compared to HP>MP.

I'll see if I can get my exact set-up later because I'm at work, but I was pushing 1200 (varied with subjob). I remember using Ogre Body, Prince's Slops, Ebullient Ring, Raptor Leather Strap +1 - easy stuff to get with HP/MP. I also had a Gigant Mantle which I was going to use when I has finished MP merits for my BLM. I wouldn't recommend switching out to club/shield, as most of the time you'll be using your light staff to cure yourself after. Just remember, the higher you push your convert build, the more MP you'll have to liquidate before switching to other gear sets (Enfeebling, Nuking, Haste/Fast Cast etc.).

Agreed.
I have a light/Apollos staff in my convert marco that consists of
/equip "x" multiple
/ja "convert"
/wait 1
/ma "Cure 4"
I use the wait line just incase lag of convert and cure messes around with cure going off
Its so much safer and easier. If i'm /whm i just hit devine seal just before.
Also with the grips adding 20/23 mp your not losing a massive amount of MP doing this either.
Alsoi gives you inv +2.

Convert gear is probably the least important thing to worry about on rdm, as elvaan. Most "good" rdm gear have MP+ on them. The only swap piece I use specifically for convert are Serket ring (MP+50,HP-50) and forest rope (MP+60).

However plenty of other gear give nice MP and are still essential for other things RDM can do :

- morgana's choker : +40MP. MND5. If you have BLM you can use it for sorcerer's latent.

- AF+1 body. MP+32 and enfeebling +15 of course. spell interruption.

- altruistic cape. MP+25 and enfeebling+5.

- Loquacious + magnetic + hedgehog bomb + tamas ring.

- various grips.

With all this I'm sitting at ~1000 mp during convert on rdm/whm (like 1100 hps), and ~850-900 for my "normal" gear. Not wearing any Zenith as I'm red mage not green mage. I dislike wearing -HP gear generally.

zenith legs and head (if not hands as well, especially for an Elvaan)

Nope. Zenith hands give -50 HP while rse hands are MP+55 HP-30.

thanks for response so far guys

so should i get rid of stuff like electrum and trade it in for ebullient/mana, I don't have a lot of hp- gear other than rings.

charlo- I usually use a light staff if I'm /whm after converting but 9/10 hate isn't really an issue or I time it in merit party where it's a fresh mob and i haven't done any actions to put it on the hate list, thinking of using the fourth division mace and just dsing my cure since usually just one cure IV or ds cure is enough without light staff and I just regen the rest of my hp back to conserve mp.

I think the idea behind using the light staff is for the MP efficiency of having +10% on your Cure IV (even better when coupled with DS), and not so much about the enmity.

As Elvaan, you have a base of 1277HP, 466MP at 75 with WHM sub. You would just need to focus on MP considering the margin is highly inclined in favour of HP. Covert HP>MP pieces are useful to you because you'll have a very difficult time reaching 1277:1277 solely with +MP gear. So you can shave some of that HP off for added MP and work your gear around a bit. I would aim for a 1000:1000 build first, and see about expanding from there. Your RSE hands/feet will prove very handy. Also consider converting with a Blue Cape (+1), Blue Cotehardie (+1), MP conversion rings and Zenith if it's available to you.

As for the Fourth Mace, meh. As I said, I prefer to convert with my Light Staff. The HP/MP on the Fourth Mace is only really useful if you're already at a 1:1 ratio anyway. If you're that eager to use a club/shield combination however Khidir, I would suggest Asklepios and Astral Aspis/Legion Scutum/Numinous until you reach 1:1 with other gear. Good Luck! :)

rdm can't use asklepios nor blue cape=/

I have asklepios for my -hp build on smn latent though!

it's not that light staff isn't helpful but I just need enough hp to get out of the danger zone in most situations I'm in hate isn't a problem usually or i can sidestep it so i can use fourth division + aspis for more mp

Actually, after some figuring I can put in the Light Staff in my convert macro without losing too much if I get Cobra Unit Crackows. I'll work on it later.

EDIT: For the supposed best setup, assuming 4 HP/MP Merits each, switching to Light Staff/Raptor Strap +1 will put a Taru Red Mage at 1232 HP / 1232 MP assuming at least +85 MP from food.
