Im getting close to lvl 51 rdm. and I was wondering that if its required for rdms to have the elemtel staffs? I know blms and whm do, but I like to melee and I want to buy a temple sword(lvl 52, dmg 32 i think). I want to know if PTs expect a rdm to have the staffs.

You could just be super-rdm and get Ice staff, light staff, & dark staff.

Just edit all your macros so it's super easy... like so:

Nukes
/ma "Nuke" <bt>
/wait 1
/equip main "Ice Staff"

Healing Spells
/ma "Heal-Your-Ass" <t>
/wait 1
/equip main "Light Staff"

Sit Macro
/heal
/wait 1
/equip main "Dark Staff"

It's a really simple addition to your macros but my dumb ass took until level 54 to figure out this way of switching staffs. For a while I had macros just to equip the staves. :) Hopefully this'll save you some aggravation.

Please gt dark staff......

please

It's not 'that' expensive. (compared to what is was a while ago)

Then I'd say get Ice staff (cmon..its like 30k now.) for your Magic Bursts (most common element is distortion = ice)

Other staves aren't as needed, but Light Staff is a nice addition after Dark and/or Ice.

All 3 Staves are end game equip, so you are basically set for the staves :D (unless you want to show off...then get them all 8) )

You would be better to equip your staves before you cast.

If nothing else, get a dark staff. Ever since I got one, I've never thought twice about it. With Ice staves as cheap as they are now, you should get one of those as well. And finally, a light staff would be great for healing duties.

-Ham

Actually if you equip before the cast, you have a 1 second delay from hitting the macro until the spell starts casting. Also as long as you equip the staff before the spell goes off, you still get the effect of the staff. All my cure macros are set to start casting, wait 1, equip staff and I get the +10% to healing every time. I /heal before equipping the staff for the same reason.

I have no wait in my macro and I experience no delay.

I use the equip command before casting the spell. You'll still be casting the spell but you will not see any animation except the final one. Sometimes if you're not paying attention, you might think you didn't cast it. It takes a while to get used to it ^^

I'd say get all of them eventually. They increase the potency of all the spells of their elements. But first is Dark, then Ice, then Light. Then the rest up to you ^^

my 2 cents.

At this point.. i think every mage should have light, dark, and ice staves. Have you guys seen the price? Ice staff used to be 300k, dark staff 600k, and light staff 400k... ice? 45k!, dark? 110k!, light? 85k!.. even fire is less than 100k, and same with thunder. I find no reason why a rdm shouldnt have all three JUST to have it, 250k and u got urself what would have cost over a mil a couple months ago

thanks guys, ill buy the 3, but what about the other staffs? Plutos staff and Apollos? are they worth it for the +1 stuff?

For Dark and Light, you don't really need their HQ. But for the other Elemental Staff, I'd recommend you get their HQ version is you have the gil to spare. They give +15% instead of +10% to spells of their elements. And if you're a SMN, you'll eventually want all the HQ staffs.

you should get wind staff like me, (or austeress, but thats still 600k >.<)

wind staff adds better chance of getting gravity (solo helper) and silence (a MUST have, a MUST have for alot of things, silence is necessary or your party is gone in higher levels) to stick,

ice helps paralyze,
im not sure what element goes to what debuff off hand, but.. if youve got the money, you should have most of the basic ones... and an austeres XD

Perpetuation(sp?) cost -3 for HQ, and -2 for NQ staff. Like J stated, staff prices are getting so low it isn't funny. At the least get drk and light. Ice if possible. In the near future having Air staff also helps landing silence and gravity as well as helpfull in Maat fight since you will be using Aero3 alot.

ADD:

Gravity / Silence : Air
Slow : Earth
Paralise : Ice
Blind : Drk
Drain / Aspir : Drk
Stun : Drk element but lightning based

LET you?

I have Dark, Light, and Ice... they help IMMENSELY... also have a sword handy just incase they actually let you melee! woot :P

Don't let anyone dictate to you whether or not you 'can melee' ..

If there's a BRD in the PT and you need to hang back for MP buffs with other casters, or you aren't skilled enough to melee and maintain your spells and manage your MPs without resting .. that's a different story.

But if you're a strong enough RDM, do what you want, just so long as you are keeping your PT responsibilites in check first. If your Melee'ing hurts the xp/hour or is a negative impact on your Party's survivability, then sheath your sword.

Personally .. imho .. Dark Staff is a waste for RDMs, with Refresh and convert, I never had the need to rest MPs during/after fights with good equipment and +MP gear, whether I subbed BLM or SMN. The exception to this is the occasional 'bad fight' where things go wrong for one reason or another (badly handled add, PT member death, etc.)

Resting for MP with a Dark Staff is never a waste for any mage classes.
