I got my replacement drive in and installed it but it doesn't read game discs. It only reads DVDs. Google hasn't helped me much. Any ideas?

that's pretty much a defective drive.

did you change out the chip/board from your old drive and put it in the new one? and are they the EXACT same make and model?

I think the main question here should be, did you properly flash the drive upon installation? If you didn't, I really, really feel bad for you.

Ah, hell. Did I fuck up? I know the drives are the same model. Other than that, I'm not sure what to do. I figured that as long as they were the same model, you could just change them out. I guess it's not that simple. =/

Most sites that bother to sell drives to the public usually post a warnin' about this. The switch process is said to not be very hard, if you have the proper tools, but you only get one crack at it and you can't screw up a thing. The broken drive and the new drive, despite bein' the same model, are nothing alike, software side. The one that came with your 360 had already been set-up properly to run with your 360 (notice I didn't generalize and say "the" 360). You use the old drive to teach the new drive how to properly function with your 360 (flash).

I've never done this, so I could be a little wrong, but I've read about it because I almost decided on fixin' up a friend 360 for him. I didn't fix it for him because I was afraid of the "one chance" deal.

no no no! haha, do not flash your drive!!! you do not have to do this if they are the same model!

K, heres what you do. Get your OLD drive, unscrew and remove the metal casing.
On the bottom youll see the rectangle computer chip. Its held in place by two plastic black clips.
Push one of the clips over so you can lift that side up (do this slowly as not to rip any cables just in case), once that side is lifted up the other side should come right off.

Now the cables should all come off very easy, just slowly pull them out of the board.
There is one that is taped to the board, just slowly pull that one off the board, dont worry its just taped so its not gonna hurt it.

Once you have it completely removed, Sit it to the side somewhere, and take your NEW drive and do the same thing, once you have it off, Sit your new drives chip in a safe storage spot, OR put it on the OLD drive.

Now take the chip you took off of your OLD drive and put it on your NEW drive, Plug all the cables in where they go, Clip it onto the black clips and you are SET! Now your 360 will read the new drive as if it was the old one because its reading the old ones firmware!

This is the PAIN FREE, FAST, and EASY way, takes no skill, no modding, nothing. Takes all of 5 minutes to do. Its how i replaced my drive a few months ago. Need any more info or a walk through in real time lemme know, i can chat with ya on aim and guide ya.

Guess I read the wrong stuff. The way people make it seem on instructional sites, and seller sites, every drive has to be flashed, no matter what. What you're sayin' makes more sense though.

Hope it works out for you Busta.

they do have to be flashed if its a different model number, well not technically flashed but Spoofed into making the new drive look like its the old drive, which is a bigger pain in the neck than the basic firmware flash.
I was under this same impression too when my drive died, and there is nothing that really tells you how to firmware flash a spoofed drive into playing burned games which was my problem, When i discovered this method which is pretty much hardly documented out there.
I tried it and it worked like a charm, Only downfall is i have an Hitachi 47D, the pickiest model for burned games, it will not read alot of blank media, Hafta use Verbatims pretty much, tho ive been doing great with memorex lately (which is rare for this drive). I would have originally spoofed a toshiba samsung or a ben q.

heres a vid that explains the process

Yeah yeah its a funny video to me, but its the only one i found that explains it, I dont know what a TOSHOBEE drive is but lmao, youll get it! and Ignore the part at the beginning about it only working if your original drive has NOT been flashed, thats incorrect.
