This is all going to sound odd, so bear with me:

As I was getting ready for bed tonight, I was doing a little reading and it stirred up an old memory of mine, I recalled that when I was much younger I used to feel this deep pain and sadness whenever I tried to eat certain foods that had a smiling face on them, even now tears well up in my eyes as I think about the pain I felt when I'd look at it, I can recall what it looked like, and at that point it really bothers me.

How could something so seemingly harmless and pointless cause me so much pain and grief? I know it's just a cookie or whatever, I even knew that as a child, and I'm not even looking at it now, just remembering the pain I felt when I looked at it as a child. I'm probably gonna be trying to figure this out forever, please share your thoughts on this issue, any insight on this would be most appreciated.

It probably isn't that odd of an emotion to feel over silly things. As a kid, your perception of what is real is very different from that of an adult. iunno

Here's a thought:

What if what you're feeling is a remembrance of your awakened sense of mortality? In short:

What if that smiling cookie, apparently so happy and carefree, strikes you as being unaware of its imminent demise?

Maybe it's a memory of the first time you realized that life can be short, and happiness fleeting.

Ok . . . now I've depressed myself :P

Solution:

Eat the smiley faces till you have cried your worries away.

Probably played too much pacman as a kid :)

You still have this problem?

Probably as Reauland said, you inherently felt guilty that you were about to destroy a smiling face.

That or maybe you have a disease... one that makes you cry randomly and talk like a stormtrooper.

Oh cmon, no one rememers that crack commercial?

That was pretty profound. You get +1 to your intelligence

. . . No . . . on second thought . . . please don't :P

Excalibur, give him the ring with INT - 1000...

And to the OP:

Your perception as a child differs much of that of an adult. As a child, you view things differently. Like, when you see teddy bear get thrown away, for example, it really hurts, even if it doesn't belong to you. As an adult, most people could care less. So as a child, that food must've triggered a guilt of somesort inside your memories.

What were you reading?

I was actually just reading random posts in my home ls's off-topic section, and someone posted a picture of those creepy smiley face fries (those things creep me out >< ), after reading that, the memory in my OP suddenly came flooding back and it just killed me to even think about it.

Quite profound, that could be a distinct possibility, I was a really serious kid, I didn't lighten up until about age 15-16 I'd say, maybe a bit sooner.

Didn't play much Pacman, but I do recall trying to eat the heads first to get over it as a kid, that just made it 10x worse and I was left with a cookie I couldn't possibly eat no matter how hard I tried or how much I liked the flavor.

It doesn't bother nearly as much as it used to back then, just enough that I either get creeped out or just feel sad when it comes to smiling foods, I almost ate some chicken that still had the head attached once, but that thing looked severely pissed off, I'm pretty sure if I looked pissed off, someone/something wouldn't want to eat me either.

I'm not a stormtrooper, I swear it! XD

Anyway, I'm already feeling much better after having been able to think about it with a clear mind and mostly getting it off my chest. Thank you everyone. ^^
