So I started playing a new free mmo. It's not a 'new' mmo, it's just new to me. I find it funny because they are labeling it as a "Horror MMO" when really it's just a MMO with gore and partial nudity. This game is called Requiem: Bloodymare.
So far I've been having fun with it, quests actually reward you with decent experience points and the job system while simplistic, seems like it could be very rewarding and leaves the game open to letting you build your character as you would like to. Of course since it's free to play, it does have one of those "Item Mall" features, where they make their money. However, it's actually relatively inexpensive. There also is a subscription service for those that want it, and much like Hellgate: London, if you subscribe you get notable benefits like increased experience, increased item and money drops and a few other special perks. Me, I'm playing for free, but I have used the Item mall once for a few very helpful tools.
Character creation is kind of limited. You pick your race, sex, face type and hair type from a few preset choices. Some races are more limited than others. But compared to FFXI, that's really nothing all that new. Compared to most other decent to good mmo's, it's sorely lacking. Still, this is only a minor gripe.
There's 4 races, male and female for each and each race has 2 classes available to them and as you level, depending on which class you choose, eventually you have the option of advancing to a second higher class with more specialized abilities. This helps to widen the type of classes in the game. And as I've discovered, when you first start out (no matter what race you are) you are a generalized melee class called a Temperion or something like that up until lvl 10. At 10 is when, after a few quests, you actually choose to become 1 of the 2 classes available to your race. Getting to lvl 10 and completing the starting quests is extremely easy so this doesn't really take long and is basically there to introduce you to the game's mechanics. Which took me a little bit to get used to. Later on, at level 30 depending on what your 1st class was, you have the option to advance to one of two higher, specialized classes with new abilities. I believe the game's current level cap is 70.
Combat is.. definitely different from most mmo's ive played in the past, but doesn't take long to get used to. Clicking or double clicking on a mob will put you in attack mode, however you only attack if your character is within striking distance. You don't auto run to the mob and attack, you have to actually make your character walk up to it before you will attack. And movement is similar to how FPS's play; the a, s, w, d keys are your movement keys and you use the mouse to turn and move the camera. As for magic, well, I like magic and both of the characters I play are mage types. You just have to be in range (not unlike any other mmo) and wail at them with your spells.
I have a friend who's also playing the game and apparently whenever you do a critical hit, physical or magical, a different animation occurs. For example a normal fireball becomes a massive ball of death (flame) and physical attacks become more brutal. I haven't personally experienced this yet, because the main character I use has such quick casting spells, I just can't tell if the animation is any different when I do a crit.
There are ragdoll physics, because every mob I've killed generally explodes into bloody halves and flies about 6 feet or more from where my character was fighting it, after the final blow. It's quite amusing. :3
Visually the game is pretty detailed for a free mmo, even more so than the last free mmo I tried, and that's saying something. During character creation the character models looks blocky and not very detailed, but thankfully once you're loaded up into the world the detail is really nice. You can't really see it from a far away camera, but up close it stands out and really surprised me. I'll post a few pictures at the end of this post.
There are a few other noteworthy aspects to the game too. There is something called the 'Possession Beast System' that seems to work something like a limit break. Once you aquire a possession beast (and you can have up to 3) a bar begins to fill when you take damage. Once the bar is full you can release the beast, transforming your character into a massive hulking beast that is capable of inflicting massive damage for a period of time. Apparently these possession beasts also can be leveled and learn different abilities as well. I have also found out from my friend, that you can also equip your possession beasts with armor that improves their defense and stats and also visually appears whenever you transform into the beast. It's quite awesome.
Secondly they have something called a 'DNA system' and I've not really read up on it that much, but apparently you can get special items that permenently effect your character's attributes and they go in 1 of 5 DNA slots. I guess this is to further specialize your character and make it more unique. Other than that, I don't know too much about it yet.

Now for a few pictures. These aren't current pics of my characters, but they should help to give a view of what the game looks like. It's got.. a unique style. And uh.. women aren't allowed to not be sexy. lol.
This is my Soul Hunter. Mostly a DoT mage. Level 12 in this picture, currently lvl 16.
Looking at some girl in a nurse outfit...
My Battle Magician. The child-like race of the game. Level 13 in this picture, currently lvl 23. I play him the most because the class is really fun, I blow shit up. XD It's like the name 'Battle Magician' implies, you cast high power, long range single attacks mostly and also have short range melee attacks that usually have some kind of status effect.
More pics to come eventually.
