FULL STORY HERE

So, keeping up with the technews wire, another popular torrent site has been given the court order axe.

This time the MPAA has actually taken over the site in question with a warning to users that they can "click but not hide". A statment that carries weight seeing as they have been given access to the site's server logs.

So, now it's fairly easy to start knocking on ISP's doors and demanding that they turn over the offenders.

The question is now, how rock solid do you think your ISP's privacy policy is?

Companies shouldn't be charging $1000 for art programs, or charging $25 for a 1 disc album when the artist only sees about 2% of the profit made.

The RIAA and MPAA know they will have a hard time winning a case against a downloader, which is why they have keep there lawsuits strictly to the people distributing the files. The server logs are a way to create more FUD, than legal action.

But there's the other side of the fence where people argue that information should be free.

Are you saying you've never downloaded an MP3?

No I havent DLed a MP3. I have a question though: why should it be free? Im just asking.

Welcome to the working world Chpal where sometimes you live on Pasta for a month because chicken is too expensive. The industry over-charges for everything....$12.95 to see a movie, $41.99 for a re-hashed CD with some extra songs on it. Not to mention that most albums put out now have like 2 good tracks with the rest being filler. That or some of the import CDs I want cost over $60 by the time you get them over the border....

I'm of the mind that if the whole album is good I'll buy it, especially when I can order it directly from the band and know that they are getting some profit.

CDs shouldn't cost more than $9.99 and you should never have to pay more than $5.99 to see a movie in a theater....I feel like I"m being ripped off by about 90% of the entertainment industry, if you don't also I'm guessing mom still pays for you to go see a movie.

I support the computer systems for a small record label company, who is a huge supporter of the DCMA, RIAA & MPAA lawsuits. They will jump on anyone who violates there copyrights, but yet they don’t see a reason to respect everyone else’s copyrights. All of the software on there network is pirated, because they don’t agree with how software price structures are done.

Im talking about illgeal DLing of movies and games. I believe thats wrong.

I find it hard to believe you have never violated any copyright laws, most people due it with out even knowing they are doing it.

Chpal, a lot of people feel information should be free to distribute because it will allow everyone access to it, regardless of their financial standing. Thereby bettering humanity yadda yadda yadda.

Those are the idealists.

Franky, I download MP3s . . . a lot of them. But on the other hand I buy CDs as often as I can afford them.

Does that justify my downloading? not really.

But I will not drop $30 - $40 on an imported CD just to find out that half the disk is shite. File sharing allows me to be prudent about my investment.

I can't speak for the movie downloading because I hate watching movies on my monitor. And have a DVD Collection fast passing the 100 mark

Yes... but it belongs to them. They can charge whatever they want, and I don't ever really feal comfortable with you saying "CDs shouldn't cost more than $9.99 (etc)." Down that way Marxism lurks. :P

Not to be offensive, but who are you to decide? If all the problems you have with the current price structures are true, don't pay the prices! But don't steal them and try to justify it with proletariat angst.

Personally, I never go to the movie theater and most of the music I have is from overclocked because I agree with your statement, things do cost too much - but these things are priviledges, not vital to life.

Sampling and Remixing is no longer covered under Fair Use thanks to the DCMA, so unless the songs you are getting have paid for a license they are a copyright violation.

Some other common copyright violations people do all the time and are unaware of.

Installing OEM software they got on one computer onto another computer. If you read, the software license, it is strictly bound to the hardware it was sold with. So even if you are no longer are using the old PC, legally you can’t install it on another.

If you run a business and are playing a radio station for your Music on Hold, that is also a copyright violation. Ever wonder why big companies are always playing classical music, it is because it is in the Public Domain, thus no copyright.

Fanfic is also a copyright volitional. Technically the originally copyright owner owns your Fanfic to begin with, as it is a derivative work.

Using emulators to play your NES games on a PC is a copyright violation.

In a lot of cases your import DVDs and games are a copyright violation if they have any kind of region lock on them or if the owner has restricted its release in other countries.

Backing up your DVD video or games is now illegal thanks to the DCMA
