Rifle Owners:

Well this got derailed at record speed - second post.
I came in here ready to put out all the arguments against anti-gun laws but you guys have pretty much taken care of it all. Honestly, if you really think that banning guns altogether will actually work, get snipped/tied.

A ban on ammunition would work much better than guns.

Reminds me of the Chris Rock joke, "guns are cheap, but bullets cost $10,000. Then you'd KNOW someone who got shot did something bad."

I think it was 5,000$ but yeah. Bullets arent like guns in that you need to keep buying them every time you wish to use the gun. If they become hard to get/near impossible, then gun crimes go down. Guns you dont need to buy again unless they break.

Banning guns in a culture that has had access to them in the past has no real effect on the homicide rate. Australia tried it and their homicide rate actually went UP. You have fewer of the sort of "newsworthy" massacres that show up on TV every now and then, but the overall rate isn't really affected.

However.

Speaking as someone who enjoys shooting and firearms in general, who the hell needs an SKS? Or any of the weapons they're talking about banning? They're not hunting weapons. They're not target weapons. They're weapons designed to KILL PEOPLE. Like every handgun in the world, but worse, since a handgun at least is reasonably practical for self defense. Assault rifles are large, unwieldy, fire ammunition that's got vastly more range and as such far more dangerous to put in the hands of the average redneck, and in general encourage people to fire in wild, uncontrolled spasms in the general direction of their targets.

If you can't hit it and kill it in 1 shot, you should either a.) learn to shoot, or b.) use a larger round. Or possibly both.

Frankly, I'm not overly thrilled with the way we tend to sell guns to anyone who wants to buy one in this country, since that tends to encourage the sort of idiocy that leads people to buy assault rifles in the first place.

during the vietnam war more people died of gunviolence in the USA than in Vietnam. funny that.

An assault rifle has no useful purpose but to kill other humans. that's what it was designed for. assault rifles are made so you can kill many people easily with little downtime.

What actual reason? what useful purpose is there at all to having an assault rifle? you can have a pistol with the same ability to kill the likely single intruder on your home. really, name one realistic scenario that you can justify having an assault rifle?
i probably honestly have less experience with assault rifles than you do, but i've handled enough weapons to know that an assault rifle like an AK47 or the ever popular bolt action always neeeds to be cleaned jams a lot m16 serve no useful purpose. not gonna hunt with em. all you're gonna do with that is rob a bank or a 7-11. would it hurt you desperately? i bet a nice semi auto pistol of any kind would be 10x as effective for self defence and... well, any real hunting rifle will out hunt an assault weapon. i know you wanna open full auto on that big game deer but i mean, if you have to use full auto to kill it, you deserve to go home hungry.

One shot would send all of them running, if you need to crank out 20 rounds in under a minute to defend yourself, then you are doing something seriously wrong and society is better off with you dead most likely.

This shit pisses me off. Congress thinks that banning weapons is going to stop the import on illegal firearms. all they are doing is hurting the people like me that have legally obtained firearms. I have been collecting various firearms from all over the world for quiete a few years now and this bullshit now makes half my collection pretty much illegal. now mind you that almost every criminal in the united states uses illegally obtained firearms. eventually if congress has its ways only the criminals would have guns. looks like ima have to go pick up a few more rifles before this shit takes effect

I haven't seen any widespread movement in Washington D.C. to repeal the Second Amendment, so I don't think that statement holds water.

I grew up in the hunting/fur industry, which means I've been around guns all my life. Hell, most schools here in West Virginia have given up on having any kind of real attendance during the first week of deer season.

I don't have a problem with gun ownership per se, but I certainly don't think every gun needs to be legal.

Doesn't matter how responsible you are, soon as you feel the need to use it on another human being is when the problem arises.

If your responsible..YOU WONT THINK OF USING A GUN ON SOMEONE ELSE! Unless they are breaking in and you already have your gun on you (which never happens cause you never expect someone to break in to your house with a gun)

You act as if everyone who holds a gun magically gets thoughts of doing something from like GTA and kill bunches of people, which doesn't happen to everyone, the ilresonsible people do..so yeah, people who are responsible dont think about killing people when they hold a gun

Its been proven that stricter gun laws in the US dont do shit, except piss legitimate poeple off. This is just dumb. I never used an Assault Rifle so i cant compare, I only use Shotgun for duck / deer / w/e hunting.

Um... no?

Australia cannot be compared to the US in terms of gun history. Whilst we did have that whole frontier thing going, Australia never had a civil war, and are still part of the monarchy so we've never clutched rifles for fear that King George may pay a visit.

The homocide rate has remained pretty much the same, I'll admit, but crimes involving guns has DECREASED since the 70s-80s. Last I heard only 15% of homocides here are gun-related, compared to you yanks who are somewhere in the 60% region.

Then why would anyone need an assault rifle? You can't even hunt with a bolt action rifle in many states, let alone a semi-automatic. If you're wanting to defend yourself in your home, a handgun would be a lot more practical than an assault rifle.

So what exactly is the purpose of owning one of them again?

Banning them won't get rid of them, but it will make it harder and more expensive for people to get them, and the penalties for using one in a crime vs a legal gun will be a mild deterrant for criminals, while locking up for longer the retards that would use them against someone else.

Where do you draw the line at what means you can use to defend yourself? A silencer? If you are defending yourself why wouldn't you want the whole neighborhood to know that you're shooting at someone that just entered your house? Armor piercing bullets? Bouncing Betties? RPG's? Kitten Cannons?

Just so you know, in Switzerland the reason everyone is supposed to have a rifle in their house is because the Swiss are supposed to complete a certain length of military training after leaving high school (2yrs I think). Because in Switzerland if the country is attacked, anyone can be immediately called to arms with no questions asked.

Well silencers are more or less so you don't wake up the kids when committing murder inside your house. I mean who wants to tell the teachers that little billy couldn't get to bed because daddy was playing dirty harry with some fool with a ski mask on.

The armor piercing bullets are for those times where you dont have a can opener and just have to get into those cans of dog food. Dogs gotta eat too right?

IDK what a "bouncing bettie" is, but if my imagination is correct it sounds hot, gimme 2 of 'em.

And common, who doenst like a Kitty Cannon? Isnt that something from "Lazer Cats" on SNL?

And Militias exist today in the US. Sure, they don't see any action, but they're there just incase.

You might want to actually look up the history behind US gun history and the reason for the second amendment. Better than assuming huh?

That's funny, I don't remember mentioning the Second Amendment...

I believe I was just giving a (very) brief comparison between the history of gun use in the US and in Australia - That is, refering to the manner in which it has been embedded into the culture (which is suprisingly what raesvelg was referring to).

Do not mistake my vague comparison for historical data.
