I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed; I have not looked. Currently my RNG is 64 and was wondering why everyone was raving about holy bolts. I'm a Mithra and supposedly Mithras have the lowest MND. I use Armbrust for cross bow and Vali's Bow. As of now I'm fighting colibris in Bhaflau Thickets, and my holy bolts don't do as much damage as Demon arrows on Vali's Bow; even the additional effect seems to be extremely low.There is also a very large difference between Slug Shot and Sidewinder, with Sidewinder being 1000+ and Slug Shot being mid 700's. I guess what I'm asking is, is cross bow weak because I'm comparing it to Vali's Bow? When will holy bolts do more damage than demon arrows? Also, I'd like suggestions on how I can make holy bolts hit for more, because obvoiusly demon arrows are not cheap. Thanks!
 
IMP, if you have vali's bow, there is no reason NOT to use it. It is good till endgame i believe. Demon should be fine. Just what i think.
 
You're comparing 66 Weapon Damage to 105 Weapon Damage. Ofcourse damage is going to be widely gapped, especially on skills.

Equipping MND will boost Holy damage from the bolts, as well as having a MND Down effect on your target, such as Shock, to lower resists.

It should be 88 damage vs 105, assuming you use Darksteel Bolts to WS.

The power of the x-bow isn't from holy bolts, it's from acid bolts. If all you're using is holy bolts then of course you're doing much less damage than you would with demons and a bow, especially before o-bow. Acid bolts don't just increase your damage, but also the damage of all other physical DD's in the party. With o-bow and acid/holy/darksteel used properly your damage is comparable to e-bow and demons, and your party's increased damage makes it no contest (except for low VT cannons where the mob dies too fast anyway)

Souter pretty much nailed it, O bow will be comparable to Vali's if you use all 3 ammos. Only thing I want to point out is MND. I used O bow myself from the moment I could equip it till 75 (when I got Vali's) and from my experience, MND will not increase the light damage per say, it will only help your extra damage not get resisted. That's why sometime you'll get 4 extra dmg and the next shot 18-20. The more MND you have, the more 18-20 extra dmg you'll get. Just make sure you swap that MND gear out for WS in your macro for STR or Rng. Att. gear.

The mobs you fight also have their impact. Some mobs are more resistant to Light Dmg, use your bow for those. If you don't have O. Bow, get it, it's worth it. It's nice to have both O. Bow and Vali's so you're ready for any situation. As for myself, I use Vali's nearly 100% now but I rarely exp with my rng. I find Vali's to be superior for KS, NM, Missions, BC, etc where you want high WS dmg > DoT.
 
I honestly would not use Holy Bolts before O.bow. O.bow is, imo, the single reason holy Bolts are used so much. Go for Gun until you get O.bow, it's alittle more expensive but you get the dmg you want. I never touched Holy Bolts from 50-67, it just wasn't enough damage, I picked out a Musk. Gun +1 and went to town. All in all, O.bows dmg output is almost to that of E.Bow or S.bow with holy bolts, and like said before, ALOT of the Crossbow damage comes from Acids.

Being an Elvaan, I've never really had to worry too much bout MND, but I do have Suzaku's Sune-ate sitting around to boost my dmg on holys. Another amount of Holy Bolt damage does come from the added effect which is affected by MND. I've seen 1 added damage all the way to 60 added damage, it's what puts it up there with Demons.

Not to mention the delay on crossbows is much lower than on a bow.
Not so much lower on O.bow, but still.
You do less dmg per bolt, but you'll fire alot more bolts and WS more frequently.


Only problem I have with using crossbow is all the room my ammo takes up.
Holy, Acid, Darksteel and Gld. Msk. Bolt. Quivered and unquivered... bleh.
 
I have an O bow for when i get to that level and I can't wait to use it. I use bow 80% of the time, I just like to cap it whenever I gain another level. But if I decide to use holy bow, which slots should i sacrifice? I do not hae seiryu's kote or suzy boots, but would like to get them. Thanks for the input.
 
whats the going rate on E.bow these days anyway. i have an S.bow but E still seems stronger (given the moonphase).
 
I prefer Vali's to Selene's myself. And guns in exp party makes me a sad panda.

As for MND gear, AF2 hat is the best piece to get if you use Holy Bolts. I think there's some piece for neck aswell you could use, but remember, any STR or RNG att. you swap out for MND will increase your chance at not getting Light Dmg. resisted but will also lower your base damage per shot.
 
Camp Eastern Shadow. NO ONE camps it, at all. Friends held it for me for 1.5 hours until I got home and no one showed up.
 
yeah i need to camp that bow too...

Vali's Bow is the R/EX version of Eurytos' yeah? For exp parties, every other weapon pales in comparison to Eurytos'. I used to put up some crazy number s with it, and outparsed a few noob mcriddil wars with it.

Crossbows are snooze, and Holy Bolts are pathetic. The damage on the bolts is too sketchy to be reliable. If you do, for whatever reason, use a crossbow, land an acid and plunk some Darksteels in. I honestly wouldn't bother with MND setups and the holy bolts when you could be increasing your dps by a huger margin with stronger bolts and more ranged attack gear.

Guns are for lazy people, so I use mine a lot. They result in the highest burst damage of any of the three, and before the nerf, they were unstoppable. Not so much now but whatever.

So in conclusion, use Vali's Bow and don't look back. You'll thank me later.
 
Vali's Bow with a Demon Arrows Should have lower Delay than an O. bow with Holy bolts if I remember correctly ( Been 6 Months). No reason not to use vali's bow almost all the time for ranger. Holy Bolts shinned when you could equip them at level 30 issshhhh. 20 extra light dmg at that level was pretty huge.

Like someone said earlier Acid bolts is the only real reason for Xbow. Vali's +23 extra attack is hard to surpass at any mob level especially HNMs. Ebow did pretty damn Good on Fafnir compared to Culverin When I tested them.

ohh and someone stackked mnd once and parsed it got a whole bunch of +40-50 light dmg on mobs that were not resistant to it and 15-30's on mobs that resisted light. Pretty shitty stuff.
 
Thanks for the input guys, I have tried Darksteel Bolts and it is better than Holy bolts, just a lot more expensive. Thanks again!
 
This mostly applied to Ranger when it was a true elitist job, but if you want to play a job, money should never concern you and should be the least of your worries.
