Maguire attacking big screen in "Robotech"
Friday September 7 3:04 AM ET

After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech."

After a lengthy negotiation, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up feature rights to "Robotech," a 1980s Japanese cartoon series with giant robots known as mechas. Maguire is eyeing the lead role, and will serve as a producer.

"We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

The $686 million worldwide box office success of "Transformers" has inspired other studios to assemble giant robot movies. Last month, Fox-based Regency picked up 1980s Japanese anime series "Voltron."

I saw that the other day. To be honest, I was more excited about the DVD release of The Shadow Chronicles, since it actually continued the story from Robotech and The Sentinel. Robotech was my first real exposure to anime, and I was hooked. I freaked out a little when Roy died.

I'm curious to see how it plays out on the big screen, especially with the Zentraedi.

Isn't that basicly the first Macross film?

Be nice to see n all, but how long has the Evangelion film bene in the pipeline? this leaves me a bit pessimistic about the whole thing, let's hope it doesen't go the same way, eh?

0_0 never seen it but have heard tons about it. Most fans back then considered it much better than Gundam. Hopefully Michael bay wont make this one XD

Robotech is best known as Macross

Actually it's a compilation of three different anime: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mosepida.

The Shadow Chronicles was the first true original Robotech story.

Macross is one of the best animes ever created and congratulations goes to Harmony Gold for making me believe the 3 series were tied. I learned a few years ago that in japan the 3 Macross series are from 3 different universes. D=

ps - How we know it can work? Just look at everything Starscream did in the Transformers (movie) and start imagining Rick or Roy's fighter in a shootout with the centraedi in the middle of the city. =D

Don't forget The Sentinels, the proposed sequel series. Only a few episodes were actually produced, but they're available. Shadow Chronicles is set after The Sentinels.
