In all honesty, it's surprising to me that QCDN's roleplaying forum, The Traveller's Tavern, hasn't seen much action throughout the years. If anything I would have assumed that FFXI players are more likely to roleplay than say WoW players.

I have this theory that the reason people are not using the forum is because they feel peer pressure, the fear of being rediculed on the Flameboard for their RP posts or whatever.

What's the sentiment of creating a private RP forum, where the only way to gain access to it would be to submit a writing sample, which will then be peer reviewed before a decision as to whether or not to allow access will be made?

I would RP on it if I had a character that wasn't an airheaded monk that loved fish. That doesn't make for much interesting roleplay. Unless you are blonde and swing a big axe D:

I just never looked at it like a way to have fun, or express myself, or an outlet of any kind. I can't say it's a waste of space because I know it WAS used more often in the past.

Or maybe that's just how it seems. Was there a decline in use? Or is it as unpopular as it ever was? If people get enjoyment from it, then it's a good thing. I just never step foot in there. Makes me feel like I'm turning into a harp playing Elf that wears stockings and pointy shoes...Or something I can't put my finger on...And I don't need that. lol

No, the current RP forum is fine, people need to stop worrying about what others think about them.

The Travellers Tavern is just like any of the other menu topics. Those who want to post in it will. I, myself, am an avid roleplayer, and have been so for many years. This game has a very well defined storyline, which makes it easy for anyone whos willing to pick up into it and integrate their own character. And the story isnt central to one area of the game or anything. All three cities have their own unique storylines, histories, NPC's. Even Jeuno has a diverse history. And with each new area added, thats even more content for roleplayers to write off of and pick apart and play.

I think, in the longrun, if there was a private forum for RP only, it would further the idea that roleplaying should be shunned, kept from everyone elses view. I, for one, am proud of the RP i've posted. I'm sure Brin, Tyrisian, and many others who've posted on the forum will agree with me on that. Theyre just as proud of their work as I am.

If you dont like to roleplay, you dont have to post there.

If you do, feel free.

Thats my two cents.

I've written several character profiles for my toons. I just don't really rp unless it is aready happening. I am not someone to start it but I'll join in at times. Public or private rp forum, I really don't care.

While not a roleplayer myself, "hiding" the roleplaying forum would damage it as a whole. It would show RP as something to hide, not something to be proud of. Something that if the other "cool" friends found out about then they would be shunned.

*points to Veo* What he said.....lol. RP is more wanted and popular than many ppl think. We are just forced to work in the shadows......I guess our LS name kinda reflects that, lol.

In the early early days before i even partied, i remember this one time some friends i made (they were a couple) invited me to go meet up with them in some house in south San d'Oria (there are building there with bedrooms, no NPCs or anything).

So i go there and the Mithra says to me, "Would you like something to eat ?" and i'm like, ok sure. She walks over to the stove, ( this place had a stove) and starts humming away. By this time i started to get a little fightened and i call Drew over to see this.

Carefully Drew and i are sending one another tells, as he was the more experienced FXI player. He was like "I swear i've never seen anything like this ever !"

This was the ultra noob days for me, and i remember all of this happening in /say mode.

I remember Zerocool walking in the room and stoping right by the door as it shut. I swear it was like he was barging in the people's house. Heads turn, he looked around, said nothing and left. I felt shame for my Tarutaru and wondered if it was possible for people to hear us through walls.

Now i never wanted to offend them by telling them i'm not interested in playing house. They did take me on my first adventure ( Running through East Ron over to Kings Tomb back then was actually a thrilling experience.)

I'm not into Role playing. I do like to make joke with it at times, and i do become fond on female characters in game, and that's about it.

I have never seen anyone, at any time, in any place flame someone for an RP. I have seen someone flamed (Roofie) for being horribly bad at RP though.

It's like this. We all play this game (except Sculli) that is based in a fantasy environment. Would you flame someone who wrote a cool fictional story? Naw, we are all sci-fi geeks to a degree. Roleplay is the same thing, just spontaneous. You are relecting your own actions to a background set by (usually) someone else. It's, in an essence, acting. And it's fun.

If you're not into it, then meh... it really has no effect on you. But I'd be willing to bet when you were a n00b you had a macro for provoke or something that read like "Now face me, evil creature~!" or something like that. Guess what, that's roleplay.

I've seen some of the most unexpected people use it too.

But roleplayers, please... don't just spontaneously start roleplaying with people who aren't/don't wanna/don't know how to roleplay. It just makes them feel weird.

The only thing that makes me mad about RP'ing. is when an RP'r starts a great story only to stop leaving me hanging. Other than that RP'n is awesome. Ive never really gotten into it myself but i love to watch other people RP or read there stories. Some of the stories that are in the Traveler's Tavern are written by some extremely talented people but there is hardly any of them that are completed leaving you wondering what happenes to the characters within the story. I for one would love to see a revival of RP'ing on QCDN and withing FFXI

More RP goes on in Quetz then you think.....we all just RP in /party chat.

RPing is very interesting to me, and I'd even do it myself; I just never have the time. When I'm in-game, I find it too hard to stay in-character. When I'm offline, there's just always something I'd rather be doing than RPing. As interesting as it is to me, I still just can't get myself into it. I like to read others' RPs, but the most I've been able to do with my own character was write a detailed background story for her. I also started writing a story about Kyrie's parents, and how the met, fell in love, and eventually died in the war, but I eventually forgot about it and have since lost it in a computer reformat. I think the biggest in-character thing I managed to do was my character journal for her on FFXIOnline.com back when I was really low level, but I've long since abandoned that, as well. I'm very good at starting RP-related things for Kyrie, but I can't ever seem to get very far with them.

But I realize now I'm going completely off-topic. Like others have said, I think a private RP board would just make it seem like RPing is something to be shunned by the general public. My guess as to why The Travelers' Tavern is so relatively unused is that most RPers probably have some other board to RP on, or RP via programs like AIM, and thus have little use for the QCDN one. Just a guess, though.

Yep, I remember that backstory Ky, lol.

But like I told Sculli via PM, the Traveler's Tavern should be used for more than just RP threads.....it should be the place ppl post their RP stories (fan fics) and their character profile....which actually, I think character profiles are already posted on there.

It just needs more uses......something to promote ppl to use it. Its all good though.....once the XBOX players come through and we have alot of new characters that are low lvl.....there will be much more RP going on. It is common for low-lvls to RP more than high......mostly due to the fact that when ppl get high lvl, they just have time for end game content.
