Hrm...after reading alot of derailment, I don't know where to even start.
I know it's a little late so shush.
On topic.
So many people make racist remarks, I've seen alot of them in qcdn as well; in the real world, it's gotten to the point where children say it to each other.
I know I've read this in I think Fellina's thread.
A child calling another child the N-word? I find it appalling actually.
Does that make it alright? Is it acceptable?
The answer can be straight forward but it can also be vague.
The ambiguity of the issue is not helping anyone in any way.
Hell, I'm a Japanese/American woman. I've heard a few jokes that do offend me to an extent. One of them was that asian eyes are soooo narrow you can blind-fold them with tooth floss. For a split second, yes, it did offend me. After the initial shock was over, I saw the humor in it. I was able to laugh after that lol.
I've made fun of my own culture as well, as well as other cultures. Does that make me rascist? I consider myself not a racist although to others I may appear to be.
I don't consider telling jokes an act of racism. I consider alieanating others for what color their skin is, for what country they are from, for their religion, or for their life-style to be rascist.
Maybe these criteria are not the same as others who deem what it is that defines racism.
Racism defined by the UN, is the term "racial discrimination" which shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.
The Merriam-Webster's Webster's Dictionary dictionary defines racism as a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race, and that it is also the prejudice based on such a belief.
The Macquarie Dictionary defines racism as: the belief that human races have distinctive characteristics which determine their respective cultures, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule or dominate others.
Alot of times I see on the news is that every time an African American man/woman gets treated unfairly, they play the Racism card. Often times it gets played out so much that I just shake my head and wait for the next news headlines.
Society does play a major role in our beliefs. Media doesn't exactly help. Music industry with hip-hop gangstas rapping about bitches and hoes and shooting people just because they piss you off?
African Americans can call each other the N-word but once someone who is not of the same color calls them that, they get offended.
Double standard much?
The way I see it, racism in any way, shape, or form is not acceptable.
If you call someone a beaner, expect to be called out on it when you get offended when someone calls you a flip/cracker/n-word/*****y-eye.
I may be sensitive, and some words do hurt me.
I'd rather be sensitive than be a total asshole thinking that it's ok to call anyone of a particular racial background a whatever "appropriate" racial slur.
Bleh...I think I went all over the place on this one.
Here's something to think about.
This is a message board where people of different age groups and different backgrounds gather.
In an ideal world, there would be no racism.
In an ideal world, people of all backgrounds would get along and be nice to each other.
However, this is not an ideal world.
Typed words can so easily be taken out of context since it's not exactly like you are having a conversation with them face to face.
I would recommend on reading what a person's post says a few times before you decide to get offended.
Perhaps it wasn't meant to be offensive. Perhaps it was.
In the end, it's your choice to be or not to be offended.
