Here's something that has been running through my mind as of late. It has been told Sam was originally suppose to be a tank.
Yet it is well known they are not, but has anyone ever tried? Is it actually possible for a Sam to hold hate and take hits with the right food and equipment? Just asking if it's possible for a sam to be a "real tank".

maybe ^_^ I assume most samurai go for high attack and accuraccy which gear wise would sacrafice equipement slots for Defense up stuff :)

Who knows? :D Maybe a samurai decked out in tanking gear might :3

SAM gets really good EVA, but their gear doesn't help out much DEF wise. I could see it working if they shortened the timer on Third Eye and make it 15 secs like boost.

I had thought of that as well. Holding a Sapara type sword coupled with a shield... the best heavy armour they can wear...

They'd still only be about as good of a tank as a WAR/MNK post 30 or 40. And honestly, after that, there are just much better options. Not going to rule it out though, not like I've tried it.

Maybe I should...

well, i do remember from experience (granted i'm only lvl 32) that it wasn't hard to hold hate at all in the dunes. so i'd say its at least possible in the low levels. lol

I can't imagine them using DEF to get by, the heaviest armor they can wear isn't that heavy compared to what PLD or DRK can wear. I'm guessing you'd have to suit up with EVA and get some shadows from SMN or something to be worth anything. I also noticed I parried a lot more with sam than with DRK, might have a really high cap on that as well.

I've seen a few Samurai take a f*ck ton of hits and survive, but it required heavy mage support.

Yeah, butthese SAM's were in full on attack mode, right? What if they were geared for right proper tanking? Hmmm...

Samurai has the only A+ Parrying skill.

Here's the thing, ppl complain'd bout the new exp wont have new tanks. SE "claims" Sam was suppose to be a tank, and hell even a War can tank with the right stuff, so this is why i ask. Maybe we have another Tank, but it's so strong ppl think it's only DD.

Come to think of it, I had a JP party where our PLD dc'd and didn't come back. Me (DRK) and the SAM tanked, he started, SC and I tanked the end. The fights didn't last too long and we chain 5'd almost everytime. we got like 4k an hour or so with 5. Every once in a while the RDM would buff up and tank a couple fights with the help of my Spinning Slash.

People complain because they play by the mold. PLD, NIN, and sometimes WAR tank. That's the rule of thumb most go by and wont accept anything else. I think a SAM could be a very effective tank if properly geared, as stated before by many of you. Hell, I remember back a long long time ago there was a small little JPN HNM LS and their main tank was a DRK. He was totally decked out in DEF gear and could tank like a champ. If people would branch out they would find more uses for the jobs in place already but it's that mental block caused by trendiness and uncertainty that keeps everything held back. Just my two cents.

Yep. Parrying Torque, Bushinomimi, and other parry-related equipment would make them pretty nice.

On that note... Bloodweapon would be pretty sweet as a tank. Dark Knights can use the same swords (generally) and shields as PLD's... maybe I'll have Chasym jump in some of my gear and see where his stats go.

Hmm, that would be somethiing, Samurai is a high hate job.. and I find myself snagging hate from any non pld tank the second I fire up Bers without voking once... and I use sole sushi, no atk food.. with dex rings usually. So holding hate would never be a problem.. and though Third Eye is 60 sec (30 would be nice <.< but perhaps a bit unbalanced..) Pld's tank fine at least till 32.. I tanked in Yuhtunga before with a Mnk, he was main tank but ...... I kept taking hate.. (I'm new to melee so I had no idea how to manage hate.. plus, it was more exciting) and after a while the mnk left as did blm and thf.. so it was myself (32sam/war) a whm (33whm/blm) and a war (31war/drg) and a goblin spotted us... war offered to voke and die but ... he just leveled, so I voked it off him and gave it a good whack.. I kept it's attention and Third Eye'd every 60sec.. ended up Meikyo Shisui'ing when he hit 80%, and in total used Meditate 2 times. No one died, Sam tank ftw, against a gob. I parried, no joke. 50% of it's attacks, and dodged almost the rest. With capped Eva/Parry.. I think Sam would make a nice tank.

Think ppl should try this out and see if we can make sam into tanks/DDs. Hell even have a war back of tank if needed. I just like to see if this can actually happen someday.

Its possibale subbing nin. Possibale does not however mean good, or reccomended. My geuss is at best they would be on par with a war/nin.

Samurai's do have a very high natural evasion and parrying. It is possibale but it is generaly a waste of said samurais time. The gear required to be an evasion tank samurai is so radicaly diffrent from an atacking samurai (IE Haubergan vs Scorpion Harness) that most people lack the room or the gil to feild it as such.

a party fizzled maybe bout a year ago in the 2nd jungle of Kazham(i'm sure partys fizzle everday, but this one in particular was bout a year ago) we were left with a blm, whm, drg (me) and a sam, believe it was Boondock...regardless, a party of 4, and the sam tanked...we were nettin chains and xp around 200 give or take, this was back before empress bands too...2nd jungle so we was all around the lvl 30 range, but we partied for a good hr, just the 4 of us, (apologies for forgettin the mage's names, short term and all that) our samuraii warrior did one helluva job tankin...and thats my story about the samuraii tank....again, lvl 30, so make of it what you will.

SAM is a good tank. Specially if you go to Xcabard and fight demons around level 50. With 2 SAMs sharing the hate and the protection against demons you can run right through that place.

I was in a JP party that was 2 drk/war and myself as sam/war, we spread around the tanking, and did just fine. As far as evading/parrying, I did a decent amount of solo around 30 as sam/nin, and evaded/parried about half the time vs EM-T mobs. Third Eye > utsu: ichi is powerful stuff too.
