Sam Tank question

Sam can tank decently in the 50's too although technically the Sam I was with (Anji) had some help from the extremely crappy nin tank who F***ed up everything including the SC during the entire time he was there.
Duo a Sam/war and a war/nin and you have yourself a relatively safe setup for tanking.

Well, look at the SAM AF body, it can occasionally boost TP when hit... so we can assume SE might have wanted SAM to be taking hits.

And also if you look at the SAM AF feet, it has enmity which would be used to build more aggro.

I can see where SE might have been going with SAM in this manner. Personally I only use the AF helm just for meditate macro, and just stash the rest of those AFs cause they look spiffy. But SAM/WAR and keeping defender up and going all +VIT and parry might be somewhat viable... especially if you are killing faster since you could maybe have another SAM/WAR there and pull off tons of SCs.

Ever notice the gargantuan +enimity the SAM AF gear provides?

AF's usually show what the job are meant to do, weather it's tank or support or healing... I guess... But hey, what do i know? XD

Cheers,
Dj

Here's the thing, ppl complain'd bout the new exp wont have new tanks. SE "claims" Sam was suppose to be a tank, and hell even a War can tank with the right stuff, so this is why i ask. Maybe we have another Tank, but it's so strong ppl think it's only DD.

Do you have a link to where SE said SAM was intended as a tank? I read all the SE/FFXI interviews and must have missed a few here and there.

On the flip side ninjas where not meant to be Tanks. What SE means to happens and what really does...

LOL, and FFXI's battle system is the most cookie cutter style out there... does this mean they screwed up?.... no not SE... no never....

Sam/War is the only combo that can tank.COnsidering sam can wear osode with vit and genbu kabuto e.t.c i'm guess sam can get some nice vit on.So i guess along with provoke they could ws to keep threat but its still going to be hard.Warrior and paladin would still be better tanks

And the other 74 levels before the osode?

I could see a way of making them a vit/def tank like PLD but not done as well without cover and the like. Again, it would only be second best and even then the diffrence between first and second is a wide gap.

Sam AF body also adds "Gains TP occasionally when damaged" Why would they add that if sam wasn't meant to be attacked. boots add +5 Evasion skill , I see some good points here , but the option of NIN sub is much more appealing, throw on a SH , af boots, evasion torque, elusive earrings, and hold hate by WSing, one might gather that the reason a sam can WS so much is to hold hate. I've watched a sam/nin solo Serket and Roc before, So i know it's not far-fetched. Throw in a Ridill and Seiryus sword as dual weild and you can DD pretty good too :D

Sam/Nin is great, sam have high evasion.
Sam/war ;/ I'd say it'd work better in low level parties but as you get higher sams just can't take hits as well. Mobs will beat the crap out of anything without alot of DEF :P

My two cents.

I think a sam/war with a good deal of (in this order) parry, evasion, defense, vit, attk/acc, str gear would make excellent tanks for VT and lower tier INCs.

If I were to try this, I'd play it much like war/mnk is played. As far as hate goes, thf/ and post 60 /thf would fix any possible drawbacks.

Hard to say on food in my opinion, I think that would be the tricky part if I were to try this.

Pld obviously just go for defense food

Ninja go for jackos, sushi, attk food depending on lvl/gear/etc.

A tanking sam and war? That'd be tricky.

The thought of defense boosting food occured to me for sams, but wouldn't that defeat the purpose? If sam was truely meant to be a tank, I personally imagined them to be a tank geared for speed parties; parties rapidily meant to chain VT-lower INC.

Damage and acc would actually be importent to a samurai tanking I imagine if one was to be a samurai tank. Unlike say pld were attk/acc are clearly very 2ndary to defense/vit/hate control. Ninjas clearly rely on evasion/attk/acc.

So the food choices for nin-pld are a bit obvious while tanking.

I dont have any links, it's just what everyone has told me. Sam's were ment to tank, and Ninja's were simply DDs. Ninja's proved to be a very good tank and Sam's a better off DDs.

I would love to see if people can actually attempt making Sam into a main tank, and if actually done well, spread to word. No longer having to ask Nins or Plds that arent seeking if they want to pt, simply ask a sam to see if he/she is up to the task~

I know Serise has tanked Behemoth as drk. I'm sure it would be possible for a sam to tank, just a question of how much mage support they would need :P

Behemoth is quite the pussy. He just has a lot of HP.

But how do his hits compare to an xp mob?

Yeah I had a feeling. Stuff like this is how bad rumors get started, you said "SE said" like 3 times.

I've tried a SAM tank once and it was so/so. SAM tank, exp'ing on bones in Necrop so it wasn't the best by any means but it worked and we got a few K exp.

My SAM is level 5.

I'll take him up as a tank, and I'll give updates on my progress as I go.

Sound good?
