I didn't quit because I felt FFXI was a waste of time; not entirely, anyway.

It was fun, but it was beginning to feel like a second job, and I didn't really have the time to devote to it anymore. I had fun right up until the end, and I never really felt like any time was wasted - save, perhaps, the monotony of Quicksand Caves camping a Shaman's Cloak, but even then I was with friends.

Shit, hope grammar nazi bashes me for my usage errors too.

Get over it, damn.

So you're trying to say you don't get tired of XI? People play XI to pass time and after a while everyone comes to the conclusion it's a waste of time. And XI is considered a hobby to just about everyone who plays it that long to even reach that thought. People who really think it's a waste of time from the beginning, don't even log on.

There's been times I've gotten tired of it. When that happens, I play a different game. Or I break out the acoustic (electric if the neighbors are away.) Something besides playing a game I'm tired of because I don't like the feeling of "wasting time."

Your statement on "If you think it's a waste of time" in general is just stating a retarded idea which is a category very little fit in. People play XI generally because they like it and they get on to achieve something, or just get on to talk with others and "waste time". Doesn't mean they're out of touch in reality after playing it for a while, all they do is look back and say "damn I should have done something else" which is what happens after you do something for an extended amount of time. What do they do? Most of the time they keep playing because it's an addiction so they can't just stop.

Then those people are weak if they get "addicted" to playing. I'm not denying there's never been a time where I'll log in here and there out of habit, but I've never logged in because I HAD to in order to get a fix or something. I learned my lesson in relationships about dropping things when you get tired of them. When it gets to that point, each day that passes where you're unhappy, THEN it becomes "wasting time" and I really don't like having things I enjoy getting to that poitn.

Can don't tell me you've never played a game for hours before and have never looked back and thought to yourself, "that was a waste of time". If you did, you're a a hypocrite if you didn't, you're a retarded for not believing so.

Well, lose/lose in the mighty eyes of Princemercury no matter what I tell you, huh? I remember one time I thought like that. I was camping something for hours only to have it stolen by RMT. Take that for what its worth.

I'm not trying to start arguments like you generally do. So drop the tough guy act, I'm here to share what I think just like you are.

lols.

Seems to me this has all come down to nitpicking. Like a bunch of hens I swear.

Pretend for a minute I have way more money than brains, and your character was exactly what I was looking for. And then I slapped 10k USD on the table in front of you.

Assuming you don't also have more money than brains, you're going to tell me that somehow your sense of honesty and integrity would keep you from accepting ten thousand dollars, in exchange for a password to an online game character?

If you say you wouldn't, you:

- do have a ton of money and are laughing at the thought of an additional 10k in your pocket.
- really are as retarded as you sound.
or
- are lying.

I've never traded one way or the other, but I'm not going to look down on someone for making some coin off of retards who cant play a game for themselves.

I think you need to reread my posts in this thread. I don't think I could be more clear about how I feel about this.

I believe i said something along the lines of "I don't care how broke in RL I may be I would never sell my char or my gil"

Some people are not that shallow. Sorry to disappoint you.

So yeah.. I think you are the tard.

Funny you were the one to show up, I wasn't even referring to you specifically, but thanks.

That's cool, a lot of people are like that as well which is normal.

i think you two are just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point...

I wasn't planning to post in this topic anymore, but since people seem determined to continue bringing me up, I'll make this one final post that sums up my feelings on the OP and the replies. If you want to continue going after me after this post, go ahead, I don't really care anymore.

1) "It's just a game" is never an excuse to do anything you want to in an MMO. To the people saying "it's just a game", you shouldn't be playing online games in the first place if you don't want to hear what other people think about the things that you do. That second M stands for Multiplayer. At the end of the day, cheating is the ultimate downfall for most games of this nature. As someone who's played more than just FFXI, I've seen many MMOs ruined by hacking/rmt/etc to the point where legit players just don't bother. It isn't just a game, it's an MMO. There's more to it.

On the flipside, just because I don't follow the "it's just a game" philosophy doesn't mean I'm obsessed with the game or anything as people seem to like implying. People only seem to understand extremes here. Either you laugh at how pointless the game is or you obsess over it during every waking hour? That's not how the world works. Some of us just play it off and on when we're bored. That doesn't mean we obsess over it and it certainly doesn't mean we don't care when people cheat.

2) RL Money. I'll go over this one more time, even though Audino covered it much better than I will here (which ironically enough, no one has called HIM out over, just me). $4k in 2 years = $2k in 1 year = not much money. That's not me being "elitist", that's not me attacking anyone's RL situation. That's me stating an honest fact. If $2k a year is a lot for you and your budget, why are you dipping a minimum of $155.40 ($12.95*12 months) into a game? That's a contradiction of logic. If you need this money, you should be out earning it. Keeping a dishonest company in business by selling them gil isn't the way you should be making money. As Sanoske himself said, this wasn't "life changing" money to him. He obviously didn't need it, he just wanted it.

3) Hypocrisy. Again another point made very clear by others but one that only I am getting shit on for stating. If you have ever been upset about people buying or selling gil, but you think it's okay that Sanoske/Odon did, you're being hypocritical. Why is it okay for people to put themselves through college by gilselling but it's not okay for people to make a living off of it to feed their families and put clothing on their backs? What is the distinction that makes it okay for some people to do it but not for others? Did they somehow "earn" the right to sell gil because they levelled a craft to 100? How is that any different than fishing up dils and npc dumping them? It seems rather pompous to decide who can or can't do something based solely on your personal opinion about the person rather than based on what they are doing.

I don't have anything else to add. If people want to continue going after me for standing up for my personal beliefs on the issue of gilselling, go right ahead. If you want to actually discuss the situation with me in a civil manner, fire me off an IM. All I'm going to say is that this topic was a real eye-opener to me and that quite frankly, I'm disappointed in a lot of this community and I'm not really sure if I even want to be a member of it anymore. I've said all that I wanted to say.

I thought about posting the "this is all I am going to say" thing at the end of my post, that I figured that is pretty closed to discussion, especially rational discussion that is thought out, which I offered you.

1) But Rappa, it is a game. FFXI is a video game. It is not real life. What it IS is a game that has a very social aspect to it, which does require a degree of etiquette and rules. I think when people say "it is just a game" is that people are taking in-game P's and Q's and becoming holier than thou about or downright moral elitists about it. To the point where they can just hurl insults much more morally questionable than selling gil - which in Sanoske's case I think has been hammered into the ground that him selling gil had residual effects that are hardly negative, and to the point where I doubt anyone can point it out.

2) The point is that you apply your assignment of worth to the amount of money. You say it is not that much. At that moment you bring RL into it. It is not very much because of your position. For Sanoske, sure he could have done other things to make that money, but at the end of the day it is 4,000 dollars. And 4,000 dollars is nice. Moreover, the other point is that Sanoske valued the 4000$ over the gil in-game that he had, while you may not have, that is simply a preference and objective.

3) Reasons I hate the classic RMT: they monopolize which encroaches on the rights and abilities of other players to enjoy the game and/or they MPK. Sanoske did none of these, he had gil, gil from crafting like anyone else has crafted and then used to fund something like a relic. Then he sold via a company that is yes, a shady company, a company that is not good for FFXI, but I woud be willing to live with a company that bought from people like Sanoske instead of resorting to past techniques in order to supply for the RMT DEMAND. You don't earn the right, it isn't a right, it is against the ToS, but honestly if everyone got banned for harmless breaches of the ToS the majority of PC players would be gone. I consider what Sano did harmless, give me a substantive reason otherwise.

How is this not civil? How is this not a debate among equal people here? How is this insulting or degrading? People seem to think just because there is an educated difference of opinion it is an insult to them, no it is a difference of opinion. What disappoints me about the community is the insults they throw out so loosely behind their computer.

I hate IM, I don't use it.

So yeah.. I think you are the tard.

You wouldn't hand over the keys to your final fantasy character for $10,000, and I'm the tard.

Cool.

Maybe it touched that, but either one of us wants to argue, so stop instigating.

How about I steal her account and we keep the same deal I made before =P.

You'll never see me spend anything other than my monthly fee on this game, (which pisses me off enough), haha. But yeah, I can't believe people are trying to stick to this whole honor thing. Everyone has a price. It's a video game character. If the friendships mean so much, cash out and roll a new character if the offer was ever made. But if someone wants to pay me thousands for something I had fun creating, and have no emotional attachment to, I'm perfectly cool with that.

I don't care how broke in RL I may be I would never sell my char or my gil

Wait wait wait waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit...

Ok, you're about to be homeless because you are out of work and are offered money for your character that will pay another 5-6 months rent to be able to look for a job... you say "fuck that" and give up everything. Might be a bit drastic, but still you said never. If this is the case, you need help. Then again, I guess survival of the fittest doesn't necessarily have to do with the able bodied, the brain can be seen as fit as well.

Those situations are way too far fetched, get real.

Her situation is out for lunch too, I can obviously see you agree.

I always knew you were rich as shit.

"Might" be drastic?

Too many "Yeah, but what if...."'s going on in this thread now. There wasn't any life threatening drastic occurrence at the beginning of the thread and there is none now. I suppose maybe if some Western European country aimed all their nukes on the United States and would unleash them, threatened to kill my family and my pets and also promised I'd be homeless even though I'd be dead unless I sold the gil that I have and sold my character... then I suppose I'd think about it. There, omg! I'd think about it! Let's go crazy making assumptions now. Seriously, this is getting so out of hand.

Wow. You seriously need to get your eyes checked then because I think you're blinded by your honor and can't realise there would be an excellent chance sitting right in front of you to boost your financial situation significantly in exchange for a password for something you NEVER use anymore. $10k for some pixels, fuck most smart people would take that.

So yeah. The title of retard is back on you.

Before you leave forever, I've been meaning to ask you this deep question, but never had the chance. So not willing to lose the chance and have on my mind for a good week or so realistically... Who's ass is your avatar?
