Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone uses satellite for internet and was wanting some feedback on pros and cons. I know there is supposed to be a delay in the send/receive, but was wondering if its bad enough to ruin gaming. I currently use 56k and have very few problems. I do get the "communications congested" more than Id like in some nations. And the updates are torture! Other than that, the gameplay is fine. If I can get something faster. then I will.

Its gonna cost quite a bit more and there is a 15 mo. commitment, so Im trying to research this out before i commit. Even if you know someone who has it, could you ask if they are happy with what they have? I was going to give Hughes Internet a shot (formerly DirecWay) if it matters.

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Gaming usually relies on a good ping rate.

Satellite signal going up to the satellite and back down to the receiving station takes a good 2-3 seconds.

That means that your ping will be a minimum of about 2-3 seconds, which is no better than 56k can achieve under normal conditions, and during storms when the signal gets blocked, it'll get substantially worse.

If you enjoy gaming, stay the fuck away from satellite internet.

That is all.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

If your dish moves more than 1/16 of an inch, the FCC will kill your signal.

Remember 1/16 of an inch down here is 400 miles up there.
