This is so far an interesting job. It appears to have a mix of WHM and RDM with a benefit of learning Regen II within lvl 37 (for sub purposes). I made this topic to see what other players have learned about scholar since they have leveled it and how it will be used.

So far I see scholar as a mage supportive job. I think of it was the "RDM that can't refresh" kinda of job. Also scholar doesn't appear to have alot of offensive melee skills either. Defensive melee I've noticed so far is parrying with my little maple wand. XD I might switch to staff and see how that works.

The "storm" schema white magic spells seem like they would ( from what I've gathering ) effect a BLM's spells if they are wearing the relic pants and a SMN who is wearing the horn. However those were the only thoughts that have come in to my head so far. The "helix" spells remind me of the BLM elemental debuffs.

Currently I'm using WHM as my sub while I am lvling it. Other viable subs could be: BLM, RDM, and maybe BRD for ballad at lvl 50.

What are everyone else's thoughts and discoveries?

*Also if there is another topic talking about this job already, please give a link. I didn't see one listed in the search.

I don't think any main healer would mind permanent light weather in the slightest, particularly once obis roll around.

I remember SE mentioned that SMN's Elemental spirits would be able to restore MP under certain conditions, i am assuming either by moon, day or weather.

If it would be by weather, and dependig how those Elemental restore MP, SMN and SCH would probably be a good combo if no Refresher around. Assuming SE doesn't screw up the good things (Which they usually very good at...)

The Helix spells do their initial damage in /tick damage, which is quite nice. If the spell damage is 100, the /tick damage will be 100. This means that MAB works great for improving its damage.

Modus Veritas doubles the /tick damage, but halves the duration, of the Helix spell currently on, which means you can get twice the damage is 3/4 the time.

That's the operative phrase in my OP.:rtfm: That's what I had discovered about it while lvling it so far. The purpose of this thread was to get everyone's insights. I really wasn't entirely sure what most people have determined what this job is suppose to do in a party scene. That's why I said I think it's like a RDM that can't refresh (I was missing that operative word of "like"). It seems like it has the supportive and enfeebling nature of a RDM with a few added perks.

Your math's a little off there. With Modus Veritas the helix's would still do the same overall amount of dmg, but it does it in half the time. Say it lasts 30 ticks, doing 50 dmg a tick. MV would make it do 100 dmg a tick for 15 ticks. Same amount in half the time.

That would be with or w/o the weather effect bonus. if it does 100 dmg a tick with weather effect for 30 ticks it would then do 200 a tick for 15 ticks

No, my math isn't off, as Its on a 10 min cooldown.

1 Helix + Modus Veritas = same damage in half the time. aka. 1/2 the time
Add another Helix right after, and you have the same damage in the normal time. aka. 2/2 the time.

That gives you twice the damage in 3/4 the time, as you cast 2 Helixes, but one is much faster. While yes, maybe "twice the damage in 3/4" the time was badly explained, I just ment that you save 1/4 of the time if you cast 2 Helixes right after eachother, as one will wear off faster but still do the same damage.

One thing I've noticed about Scholar. I parry a fuck load. I'm using Club and it's insane. I think the reason I can even solo is because of all the parries.

Its the first job you've ever leveled that even HAS parrying, so that's probably why lol.

I lvled Drg and Nin and I've never parried this much(They aren't lvled high but I did lvl them)

Yeah I noticed that too. I wonder if they raised the parrying skill for all job or if it's just Scholar....oh damn....

I feel a SE "emergency maintenance" and an "current known issues" posting on POL in the works already.

At the following time, blah blah blah

The rate at which the job scholar will parry with a weapon has been (our favorite dreaded word) adjusted.

Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed that. I parried/evaded my way through two fights against DCs without being touched.

I fought a EM the other day. It was kicking my ass. I was done to 20 Hp and he was down to like 15%. I parried 5 times in a row and was able to kill him. 5 times in a row. Like Wth. That's insane <_<

Probably not just sch. I was killing decrepit gnoles in jugner on nin/rdm and parried more than before.

I guard a lot as DNC, no matter what I sub, if I use H2H. And DNC don't even have Guard Skill

I see scholar being in the same slot as BLM endgame, but more than likely competing for the other slots that other mages take like SMN,BLU,etc. The DOT spells are very nice, and they are MP efficient.

That being said, the other parts of Lv75 BLM will still hold true. It will be pretty much forced to solo for it's experience. I'm sure it will be able to do so well too, being that it has buffs and cures in it's main lineup. It could solo those qiqirn rangers while resting MP even.

The job is majorly lacking right now. The weather spells only last 45 seconds and have a 2 minute cool down on recast. They give only 1 "weather" as well. You could possibly stack them with the AoE Stratagem in a BLM party or something though to extend their usefulness a bit -- at the loss of not being able to use your potency for helices. Outside of that situation I don't see those particular abilities really being used enough to justify a party slot.

If you were to say RDM was 67% WHM and 33% BLM, I would probably say SCH was 67% BLM and 33% WHM. There is still some way to go before they have it up to par yet. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of changes next patch.

Perhaps a Group 1 merit to lower recasts or extend durations is in order?
