Well I've recently taken up RDM, I took WHM to 41 and realized that I can't do anything on my own at later levels, (I also got jealous of Convert and Refresh. Anyway my RDM is currently at level 20 and I'm the kind of guy who likes to have his spells in advance. So I plan on just mining till I have enough for Dispel, but I'm looking at the price of Phalanx and wondering, when should i have this by? The price fluxs on this it went from 96k to 150k. So if you would like to BCNM for this(all I want out of a run). Or have any tips or suggestions, I'm all ears.

Phalanx is a great spell. Not extremely useful for parties, but amazingly awsome for soloing. It's minus damage per 10 levels of enhancing magic. Stoneskin + phalanx is an awsome combo. It makes stoneskin last so much longer.

For me personally I bought that scroll at around level38-39. A friend got it from BCNM then deleivered it to me in CN. I paid 110k for it I believe or 115.. You should have it by level45, I'd say.. Your party life won't hinder without it, but if you want to do any soloing of anything. That spell is a must..
 
I got it at level 39 for 95k. Only time I have used it in party is if the tank is having major issues or I’m taking on a link, it is extremely useful for soloing. It is not a spell though that will make or break your ability to get a party, so when you have the gil and feel you need the spell get it.
 
Is it really -1 damage for every 10 enhancing levels? Doesn't MND factor in at all?
 
mnd does not affect phalanx. Only enhancing skill does. I'd say don't focus on phalanx as much now, focus on getting gil for dispel. W/out dispel your party life is screwed, so get it ASAP. As for phalanx, don't fret over it so much and just get it when you have to gil or do a BCNM, simple as that.
 
Another quick question where is the best place to pick up Dispel? Should i make a trip to Rabao, Windy or just AH it?

Check Rabao first, it is typically always cheaper. I would also take someone along with you who has high fame in sandy. (I think Rabao is linked to Sandy).
 
To be quite honest, I've only used it like 3-4 times since I got it.
 
I would buy that spell right away before it goes up any higher. I regret not doing that with Raise III.
 
No you'll want to get phalanx eventually, i've used it countless times, and its been worth it. I'd suggest taking somebody with max sandy fame to rabao with you to pick up the spell. If you can get it on the AH for around 68k then thats pretty cheap as it is and you shouldn't have to worry about traveling to rabao.
 
As far as farming for dispel goes, you should save up about 65k, take a friend with you to Rabao that has HERO level fame, give them the money, and have them buy it for you at the NPC galka that sells it there. ^^ that's how I got mine way cheaper than at the AH lol
 
I don't think I got it until 50ish XD mainly cause I was broke and didn't see it useful for an exp party.. so I just bought spells for exp purposes and bought armor for exp purposes before solo-ing purposes.. and when I did get I believe Deal bought it for me ^^ cause I helped her with Genkai or something XD she didn't have to..
 
As they said ,focus on dispel before anything else, but you def. shouldn't over look phalanx. I got it at level 30 for a frikin 170k (not a word), but still it's one of the best spells I have and one of my fav. I use it evertime I solo, which is very often for farming ect. Since I only view parties as a needed evil to get stronger, I usually work towards solo or non xp goals, so phalanx was top on my list.

What I mean is, I didn't mind acting like a whm as smn in a pt, because I know after the pt I'd be able to go summon and act like a smn when I play solo. (And I'd be stronger as I level too) So pick it up when you can, it helps make you more of the soloer rdm are famed to be.
 
I think phalanx absorbs:

(Enhancing magic / 7.5) - 10

so unless your enhancing magic is more than 75, its useless... but you should have it capped as a RDM ;) so it isnt much of a problem. For parties its not too great (Unless your tanking :P), but soloing... Hell.. that with stoneskin gives you even longer invincibility :P

Anyone want to BCNM for Phalanx with or for me?
 
After doing BCNM 6 times in a row, your likely to have enough to buy Phalanx when everything sells. There is a chance you won't make much. If your willing to sacrifice Utsusemi and worry about buying that instead. You can do the quest for it and sell it. I don't know how much it's worth now, and i personally never did the quest. But i know it use to be good coverage for things in the Phalanx price range.
 
Would anyone like to sell me Phalanx? I've currently have roughly 62k. I'll pay any reasonable price, it shouldnt take me much longer to make the gil to buy it.
