Self Replacements

I don't mind if someone self-replaces so long as it's their exact same job or a viable substitute (i.e. same place in the skilchain chart or same damage type).

When I lead a party (99% of the time), I do try to ask people to find their own replacement if possible. It's either that or have the party take a five minute break while I do it. While I can hit "/sea all <job> 75" commands and send multiple /tells to people while I'm tanking, I'd rather not. If I miss a voke/flash/whatever, DDs tend to get munched upon.

In theory, it's a nice thing to do. In practice, it's typically terrible, without asking.

I typically see one of two things:
"Hey, gotta go, I got a replacement in zone." ...but people aren't staying much longer, or we were planning to disband soon.

Or "I've gotta go. Invite [complete fucking idiot], he's in the zone already. /disband"

Frankly, since day one I've felt replacing people (except early on, and in some odd circumstances) is a fucking stupid practice, resulting in nothing but inconvenience to everyone, often the person being invited. That won't stop people though, sadly. :/

I tell the leader I gotta go (usually half an hours notice) and ask if they would like to look for my replacement, or if I should find a player similar to my job and abilitys in the party (for example, if I'm main healing on RDM, I might ask a RDM or a WHM)

Thankfully, the best thing about leveling lowbie jobs (which is what I'm currently doing) is most of the time you say you're going and then everyone else suddenly has something they gotta do too. It makes me chuckle.

I will normally try to find a replacement for myself if the job I'm on isn't a busy one, or if the leader's is. I also won't find the first person who says yes, w/o looking at the job. If I can't find the correct job to replace myself, I try to find the next best thing, and before asking the person, I ask the party if it is ok with them. 99% of the time, when I leave a party, it is because I have to log off (usually due to work in the morning). And if this is the case, I will give at least 1 hours notice.

As far as inviting people to bad parties as my replacement, I am guilty of this, and I apologize to anyone I have ever done this to. I feel an obligation to not leave the party hanging just because I don't like the party. Hell, I've been invited to a party on Blu as the 4th melee, with a week backline setup, only to later find someone they should have invited first instead of me to replace myself. And it's one thing if the party is just full of stubborn people who don't want to change, but if it's just full of people who don't know their job well, or are rusty at it (2nd more likely the case if this is in the Mire, well I'm hoping anyway), then I am going to try at not screw them over by leaving with no replacement.

I agree the leader is responsible for alot, but I don't mind releaving some of the pressure by finding someone to replace myself.

I've noticed something as I creep ever closer to 75 on PLD. There are still people who prefer a traditional party setup as opposed to the "TP Burn". So I still get pt invited as a PLD at 73+. Now the problem I am having is those parties are mostly composed of lots of /war and I have to use everything at my disposal to manage hate. But when I have to go, suprise, suprise, I cannot find another PLD at my level to replace. I never used to have an issue with finding a replacement PLD. Now all I see seeking are Ninja's.

I don't know about the other 73+ PLD's on the server, but I plan on meriting with a traditional pt setup. Not to say I wont try the TP Burn if I can ever get into one.

Wow, at least a few pld's are getting invites... I haven't been able to get a party for weeks, and I'm at 66pld. ><;

Of course, after I offered to help a friend last night, I get a /tell 2 minutes later wondering if I wanted a party... Seems it always works thats way.

Agreed with the OP pretty much, fortunately I dont have anyone that does replace themselve with a job with another role... so I dont mind self replacing as much. Then again my luck with stuff is kinda freakishly great it'll go down when I decide to camp a few nms

I agree completely Firestreak. The blame falls to the leader of the party if it disbands soon after the replacement arrives. It is acceptable for a member to replace themselves with notification, but it is the leaders call on whether to disband or continue the party by reforming with new members. I always let the PT leader know if I am either @1 hour or @30 minutes until I have to leave.

I give notice at 1 hour, then a reminder at 30 minutes. At 30 I ask if the party will continue, if I'm told yes, I spend that 30 trying to find a replacement. I replace with my job but if I'm on RDM, I look for RDM, BRD or Corsair if I can't find a RDM. I'd let the party know first though that I could not find a RDM before asking.

this is singlehandedly the reason i haven't been levelling rdm. People are level 60 and still don't know how to party properly.

I've found that the leaders that require (like Firestreak) that they do all the replacing, tend to be much more competent than the average idiot, probably a lot more so. Those leaders tend to organize the entire party from the very beginning, set a SC, a MB if possible, chose a suitable camp and everything else for a smooth running party on their own. They don't ask the party before they start.

The leaders that ask you to get a replacement for yourself usually tend to be the exact opposite of the aforementioned leader. When the party started, they asked the first people invited who to get for members, where to party, sometimes, but very infrequently what SC to do, etc. Those leaders just tend to be leaders in name only and really only have the authority by proxy.

Given that the resources are all completely available online, any person should be able to be the former leader over the latter. Check out Campsitarus for good camp locations (take note of level variations in party). Somepage is a great resource for finding mob weaknesses and other various info. Use FFXIclopedia for pretty much everything else that the first two sites lack such as the renkai chart. *hint* *hint* be good leaders. >.>

I agree with the OP, but Celvantes makes a good point. When I'm pt leader, I am usually on my PLD and it is almost impossible to /sea and tank at the same time. i've asked people to replace themselves, but i've also asked that they let me know what they find before they invite them.

In a lot of ways I like how the JP do their pt's. Everyone leaves from a town or general meeting place together, and if one person leaves, the pt disbands. This promotes longer pt's and better pt's. The reason I say better is because when you fight next to 5 others for an hour you get to know how they run their jobs and there is a flow to the party, and exp. As soon as a rep gets called in that flow is disrupted, and it takes a minimum of 30 min to get it back. IMO it's better to go back to town and reform. This also lets people refresh signet, get ammo, food, whatever they need and also let's them relax and be fresh for the next run. This is totally dependent on how long the pt has been out in the field.

i knew about mostly all of that site's camp listings from my past experiences. but i did see quite a few useful alternatives that i didnt know about. and they, thanfully, didnt involve the new areas. thanx lavi.

People should always check that site. It's happened to me a few times where someone swears they went to X area at Y level, but they are often a level or two too early (sometimes even late) to be experiencing in that camp. A lot of people rely too heavily on their memory which is faulty sometimes or lacking some details (You may have played in Labrynth of O. at your level, but everyone else was 2 levels higher). Even party setups have a huge effect on the effectiveness in certain areas like having a bard can make experiencing in an area early possible. That's why I tend to rely heavily on what I can backup with facts instead of what I can remember.

The problem with leadership is people often don't do it because they lack the confidence to do it and/or are too lazy. I myself am very lazy and don't make parties, but that doesn't mean I lack the ability to do so. When a player decides to make a party, they should do it completely and to the full extent of their ability which isn't a lot to expect or ask, as I have said, all the resources should be available to most players very easily. The improved experience you will recieve from building a better party should be more than enough encouragement to at least try.

I find that it is only really impossible to look for a replacement if you are the one pulling... at least as tank (and esp. pld) you rest in between battles. (unless you have say, rdm brd combo).

I don't think i've rested in a party since I was in my 40's or 50's. Thats the reason i don't start parties, its waaaay too hard as a tank to /search for replacements.

Edit: I mean, I don't think I've rested long enough between fights to /search. The rest's last as long as it takes to get another mob over to the party, which is usually seconds.

i manage the task quite well. 95% of the parties i'm in are made by me. and often i end up taking over anyway. i like the element of being in control. cause i know what does and doesnt work in parties, for the most part anyway. i've been surpised a few times but that was because of the players ability. i cant expect every person i look for to be top notch so i usually play it safe.

Eh... I really don't care. I mean... if I pick the replaces, its not like its different than someone else picking them usually. There are only so many people to choose from. As long as I have had good communication in the party, talking about key decisions, they usually have gone pretty smoothly and people don't get ego-trippin', upset, emowhining, linkin park, etc.
