You can do everything on one character in FFXI; while in every other MMO out there, you need multiple characters to level up every job/class. Aside from more storage/leveling another craft, there's not really much reason for a second character in FFXI. Other MMO's give you free characters, because they pretty much have to; very few people play only a single job for years. Everyone levels multiple jobs, and having to pay for a completely different account would destroy a significant chunk of their population.
FFXI took a different approach to the same problem, one that I infinitely prefer over the single-class-per-character model. You don't need extra characters, that's why they charge a miniscule amount more per month for any of them. Yeah, it'd be nice if mules were free, but it'd be even nicer if they were just a menu with storage/delivery box/AH access.
I'm not discounting that, Baj. It's fine that you can change classes in FFXI, and it's fine that you cannot in other games (actually, in Guild Wars, you can...just not your main profession). Charging extra for additional characters, should a player choose to level them, is fine as well. However, even SE notes that everybody...and I mean
everybody has at least one storage character. I don't know a single person that doesn't, actually. They even take it into account on their annual census.
What is the extra revenue generated getting us? A better FFXI experience? I hear nothing but bitching daily about how X mob is broken, X system is borked, and how X job needs additional nerfing or buffing. Are they paying for R&D into better games? Let's see how many more FF ports they can shove down our throats for the Nintendo DS. Hell, they're running out of ideas, so they've started on OTHER game series (Chrono Trigger etc.) Are they giving us better customer service? We know the answer to that, and they even go so far as to give us a "Task Force" that is conveniently yet abysmally named "STFU".
If it's about mere storage, they should be able to offer additional storage capabilities
at no charge. Great, it's a marketing tool to get players who've taken their jobs to 75 to play on ANOTHER character. I only personally know two or three persons who actively level two characters on the same POL account.
I'll maintain that the entire Content ID system is bullshit, and their methodology behind it is completely skewed.
This update does look kinda neat, though.
