Hey everyone. Well, I'm posting here hoping that someone has had the same issue I'm having right now and was able to resolve it.

Anyways. I connect to FFXI with a Cable connection and through a router (D-Link DI-624 to be exact). Have had no connectivity for over a year of playtime until the last month or so. The problems started to happen soon after the last big update (Not sure if this is related or not), and have continue'd on despite my best repair efforts since then. Now when I connect directly to my cable modem I have no issues whatsoever. The only problem is that this is not a viable solution as there are multiple PCs in my household that require access to the internet simultaneously. The router I was using before today was a Linksys, and it crapped out coincidentally. So I went to store today and picked up the brand new D-Link.

Installed everything this afternoon, and was looking forward to some consistency from now on, but about 40 minutes or so into my online session I got the red dot of doom. I consulted with PoL tech support and had an online chat with a PoL TSR. He told suggested that I configure my router to do "port forwarding" for some specific ports that PoL requires access to. So I consult with D-Link tech support to ensure that I have everything setup correctly, log on and enjoy 20 minutes of connectivity /cheer. Then once again, the red dot of doom! The PoL error is always PoL - 4002, and I'm basically completely stumped on to what to do next. I know these board have some tech saavy people (of which I am definately not one) so i'm hoping someone has encountered this issue and knows of a way I can get it fixed for good!

Any help would be much appreciated, as I really don't know what else to do. Let me know if you need any additional information about my equipment setup etc. Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to assist me with this ^^

Check for heat.
I know a couple people who have taken the dremel to their router enclosures and added a big passive heatsink to some chips that got really hot during operation. Over time dust may have accumulated within the router preventing heat transfer from the chips the the ambient air. Just a guess anyway.

Yeah, the airflow seems good and I had this issue within 45 mins of using a new router, so I'm not sure if that is an issue, but I will definately take a look to see in case :)

Naw no heat.Make sure you are "Forwarding" or "allowing" the ports this game switches to.There is also a way that router doesn't stop any ports at all which is best.I think there is info about which ports to forward w/e on POL website otherwise disable the built in firewall. Its a new router so you are probably running it with it blocking the ports.
