Seriously...

Threads that reach the 1k mark and go over are pretty tough on the server. So to save it stress we lock the thread and have it remade, because if a thread gets to the 1k posts mark its probably worth being remade.

Much -unlike- a chance and a coincidence, to complain is to bitch or gripe.
I would say that complaints and bitching are two different words with a similar meaning, just that one implies a bitch.
Are you implying you're a bitch?

A dog can't complain (by human standards/interpretation). It's at this road my joke really hits home if you didn't get it the first go around.

How is 1000 pages any more taxing than 10 threads of 100 post/pages?

Logic would dictate that one thread with 1000 post would be the same stress as either, if not less, due to the confinement (only one thread to be handled). That's why I'm curious. If you guys can't answer it's all good. This is just me askin' a question for the sake of my own curiosity.

That's a very good question. I have no clue, but from what i've been told on this subject, it just is. Since it has to do with the specific thread having more than the 1000 posts its how each thread is saved individually on the server. Once it gets to that 1k mark it starts to chug loading that thread which slows down the load time for every other thread. That's just a shot in the dark though.

TL;DR: Time paradox occurs and alternate realities insue.

So instead of just lockin' it wouldn't it be better off deleting it? Or does locking it have the same effect from a loading stand point?

I think it's kind of like when you go to a book shelf and you see different sized books. If you look at a smaller book it's easier to lift and it's easier to find which page the content that you want to read. With a larger book it's heavier and it might take you longer to find the page that you want to read. The server has to look through each thread, count each post, look at the last post that the user has seen, separate the posts into different pages depending on the user's setting, and display the posts.

Summary: Longer threads means that the server has to pull up more posts and format them for you to look at them thus more work on the server side.

I didn't have anything to do with the guideline implementation for QCDN, though I've known about it for a long time. And I have no idea about QCDN site indexing or any number of other variables since that has nothing to do with my responsibilities as a user or liason. But, based on what has been explained to me for other sites I frequent, here is what I believe. I also think Miros explained this previously, but the old private forum I saw that in is gone now, so I'm not certain.

Its not that 1 thread x 1000 posts larger than 10 threads x 100 posts, its that the 1 thread is less efficient. It takes a lot more time to search or even load a thread that is 1000+ posts (not 1000 pages, man that'd be huge). Keep in mind that when I say a lot more time, its relative to the speed of a computer. While loading a 1000+ post thread may be significantly slower than loading a thread with 40 posts, you may not notice at all because the computer is so much quicker than you.

This was the exact example I was going to use, but QCDN wasn't letting me post at home anymore yesterday -.-. But yeah, harder to find stuff, it's heavier, yada yada.

Most people have come up to talk about the 1000+ threads but just to add to it...from what Reeve told me it's taxing on the database and since a 1000 thread has a lot of rows to identify then the larger it gets the longer it'll take to bring up either the forum or the posts. In the end, Reeve has been working with vB and databases a hell of a lot longer then I have so I just have to trust his explanation.

And as for you saying it would be better off deleting it, well, back when Bored at Work was public and one of their threads reached the 1000 mark we would delete it. We could delete the other 1000 ones but I'd rather people be able to go back and be able to re-read them. More like a convenience to the user.

You know, I've seen this happen in another forum that has many huge threads. Posts start to appear out of order and get delayed and whatnot. Its really annoying.

That's a good answer, thanks a lot. It kind of blows my mind that a computerized system would have troubles sorting but only after a certain point.

Book burning saves internet forums.

I doubt that a straight 1000 posts is the absolute threshold between an okay thread and one that taxes the server, but it's the point established by Reeve (I still want to know how he's been).

Hey, when my Naruto thread got locked and there was a 2nd one made, the Bleach thread overtook it in posts, something that had never happened before.

I'm really butthurt over this and I cry myself to sleep sometimes when thinking about it, so is there any way you could like, add 300 posts from the first thread to the second one?

I think that it'll really help me out IRL. You wouldn't want to have any suicides put on your shoulders, would you?

Spoiler:
Big-O is my favorite anime of the late 90s
