People have been asking around quiet a bit lately about future server merges and it seems we have finally received an answer from Yoshi-P himself.

I understand your concern on the number of concurrent users.

Actually the world merge is currently in plan.

We will first analyze the number of players in the game after the billing service begins.
Based on that analysis, we will be running a simulation where the maximum concurrent access during the peak hours will become somewhere around 1500 to 2000 per World.
* The above number is provisional and not a finalized number.

And with the method on how the world merge will be done, it will not be done in a simple method where World A and World B will merge into a single new World.
In order for EU players to gather on the same server in a certain mass, we are planning to go with the method where the players from a World with a less population can designate the World they wish to transfer to.

With the details such as when and how it will be done, they will be announced once they are confirmed.
(I'm assuming that the next update should become available in mid-January.)

Pretty sad when they're consolidating servers already, lol.

But it is a realistic approach to a game they made fail by releasing too early. *shrug* I think had it simply stayed in development, with just beta testing being done and they had released it say, close to around this time this year they would have had a lot more time to fix up the things that were wrong with XIV on it's launch. They could have fixed the errors and added the content all before the game went live. Instead of them projecting the ideal FFXIV they plan on having in 2013, they could have probably had it ready at the end of 2011.

Instead it was rushed, sloppy, buggy, slow and fairly empty (as far as content). I honestly have very little desire to reinstall FFXIV ever again at this point regardless of how far along it has come since it's rather lackluster and disappointing, albeit very pretty to the eyes, launch.

I'm willing to bet had they taken their time and made the game more solid and refined, it would probably be giving The Old Republic a run for it's money in the power grab for MMO dominance.

We all know WoW is on the top of the hill, but it's slipping. I strongly believe TOR will reach the #1 spot. How long it holds that spot is another matter.

FFXIV had a lot of great ideas, some of which I don't even know if they have been implemented since I had quit the game. It's suffering now because the people who were really wanting it to succeed have already been let down.

As for me, I think the only way I'd ever consider playing XIV again would be if they added a class that resembled Dark Knight from XI or one that used either Great Swords or Scythes. To my somewhat limited knowledge on current XIV ongoings I don't think this is going to happen. It certainly didn't seem as if they would add any more Disciple's of War classes any time soon.

FFXIV servers being merged is not really that surprising. Squeenix failed to deliver on this one when they had the chance to make it special. They hadn't even fixed everything they have said they were going to and now they are asking people to pay to play their unfinished game. And not only that, they want people to continue paying to play their game for a whole other year while they fix it

No thanks. I'd rather play a game that is practically complete minus a few non-dealbreaking bugs than a game missing 80% of it's content and frustratingly lagged controls.

Alright, I'm out.. practically passed out while typing this.

Heh. In theory FFXIV-2 will basically be FFXI-2, but that's still some time off yet, and it's... questionable whether they'll be able to maintain sufficient momentum to reach that ultimate goal. With FFXIV moving from what is basically a FTP Beta to a pay model in the next few weeks, I expect that they'll see a significant drop-off in players, and yes, that does necessitate a server consolidation.

SE was just earth-shatteringly arrogant to release XIV in the condition it was at at launch. If they'd released it in its 1.20 or later version, they might have been able to retain people until they could genuinely fix it. As it is... I've said it before, in my blog and elsewhere, but you get one chance to have a good launch. It's like a first impression; from here on out, SE is going to have to overcome the overwhelmingly negative response the game earned when it came out.

And I don't really think they can do it. The fact that they've yet to implement something as fundamental as an Auction House implies to me that they're not taking this seriously enough, or that they're willing to ride the whole "player-driven economy" model down in flames; either of those responses is unrealistic.

Ah well. I'm still enjoying XI in its arguably twilight years.
