Server Names Are Out!!

Yes, you're right in thinking that it is sort of more a punishment than something good -- I feel the same way. If you want to play on a fresh server, you're going to have to, again, start fresh. New "fresh" players though, can pick any server they please be it a fresh NA/EU/JP server or Legacy server. Honestly, either way, I think the Legacy servers will be fairly unpopulated and this was a bad idea.

The more I think about it, the more inclined I am to forget about my old character. It's not like it takes long at all to level in this game, I mean, level 50 in a matter of a week is what I'd consider slow and now, it's even faster [seemingly]. I feel like I'd be missing out on things by just keeping my old character. I think I'll end up making a fresh character on a fresh server and spend the bulk of my time there. I'd imagine people with all level 50's and such are probably still going to be situated at the end-game spectrum of doing things, so it's likely maintaining an old character is going to be fairly simple, like in, say, WoW where really at max level, after rep grinds and such, the only two things to do are PvP and Raiding and you can only raid a set amount of times per day/week. Being level 50 could be boring I figure so, yeah, I think I'll change it up a bit.

It's not a bad decision on their part, if they intend to keep a reasonable pace of updates for new endgame content.

Having one group of people with a massive head start in position to dominate endgame for everyone else... probably something SE is trying to avoid. Looking at it objectively, there are fairly few positives to throwing legacy characters into the mix. Hell, there are fairly few positives to even permitting legacy characters to exist, other than the sole justification of not pissing off the scant handful of people who stuck it out in the broken-ass POS that FFXIV 1.0 was.

As it is, you're gonna have new servers, where there's a lot of grinding to do and whatnot before people are ready for endgame (thus, more time for SE to work on content), and legacy servers, where people jump on what content is already done and likely get fairly bored before SE manages to roll out new material.

To be honest, in their shoes I likely would have just offered some incentives for people who stuck in out in 1.0 rather than letting them maintain their old characters.

I want to start this by saying that I don't take the stance that I'm right and you're wrong, Raes, not at all. I'm just inclined to see things this way more so than your way.

It's a terrible idea either way from a population standpoint. Maybe everyone will somehow manage to talk it out and populate a server or two, but the way I see it happening is the majority will likely be spread very thin over these Legacy servers. In games that resort to this, sort of "normal" WoW-esque model, population matters, it matters a lot -- nobody wants to play on a "dead" server and really, with dynamic events and such, you just can't play on low populated servers, the way the game has been designed to play [GW2 has done a good job proving this].

This game doesn't require the sort of metagame like conflict FFXI did. End-game here is not a competition. Basically, in a game where instanced dungeons are the "end-game" it's more like what's my progress to you? There are only two things I can do with my experience and gear, that being help you more easily or exclude you -- "dominating" end-game is meaningless for the actual game. The only sense of domination to be had here will be "our guild was first for X and Y!" and such.

Which brings us back to the big problem, population. Which is a better problem to have in a game in which the end-game is meaningless to dominate, a population problem or a "my guild can clear Instance X better than your guild, suck it!" problem? One means something to the game, it devalues it, the other, it's just idiots being idiots on the Internet.

To be honest, in their shoes I likely would have just offered some incentives for people who stuck in out in 1.0 rather than letting them maintain their old characters.

All of that said, I do agree with this. I think it would have been better off for them to just give out, say, permanent booster packs or buffs to sort of curb the "grind" [again, this game is very fast] but make people experience the entirety of the game all over again in some capacity. As it stands, the "fresh" players I could see being far more knowledgeable of the overall game by the end as opposed to people who stick to their Legacy accounts.

It's significant to note that FFXI doesn't really operate in a competitive mold anymore either, which doesn't stop people from making endgame an exclusionary event. It took all of a few weeks for the Delve content to be out before people started excluding anyone who didn't have a delve weapon completed from participating, sadly. Even before then, if you didn't have a RME weapon, your chances of getting into a Delve run were pretty slim as a DD. When you have an established community interacting with a new community, you wind up with the established players setting very high barriers to entry into events/guilds/linkshells.

Sure, players can start those events themselves, etc, but you wind up with a very stratified experience that doesn't do much for a cohesive community experience. With one group perpetually playing catch-up, you've got a lot of potential to build a rather nasty dynamic.

Then you've got all the concerns about crafting, gil, etc. It's a mess. Hence why I wouldn't have done it, or just done it the way they did. From SE's perspective, the worst that happens is that they have to consolidate the Legacy servers earlier than expected.

I dunno, Asked a few LS mates and thats what they got from it too, Bare in mind that stream was before 1.0 even fully ended on twitch and it was typed out in the chat as they said it on the video, Friend of mine says he may have screenshots from it buried in his folder somewhere since he loves to document everything. Waiting for him to get back to me on that. But if it has changed since then, thats kinda BS because there is no way in HELL I am going through all the work it took to get Ifrit, Moogle and Garuda Items. Especially Garuda Items. Finding a team that was competent enough to win a Garuda fight was damn slim on any server and I am not doing that headache again. I will just stick to a Legacy server with all of my friends from my different Linkshells and learn all the new stuff at all levels.

Downloading the new client right now, maybe I'll see some of ya on the 14th!

The sad thing... those fights weren't even that difficult -- there was just something about your typical FFXIV player that wasn't right for the game make-up. I'm figuring now that it's more traditional they'll be more people that are used to those type of encounters playing.

Anyway, what's the link for the new client now? I got my "here comes the next phase get ready!" E-Mail but it's void of any links to actually get the client.

You can patch the client from the last beta.

Figures, I got rid of mine a few weeks ago while cleaning up. Luckily I put the installer somewhere though.
