Shafted at work

Okay sooo here is the thing. I love my job really I do. I work for the gov. and its a great easy job and pays decent. Just some things really irk me. Like this Thanksgiving. I admit I don't have family up here .... and If not offered to come down for Thanksgiving by Unphazed and Zodiaque I would be spending it alone. Last week we all was in our boss' office and she asked if we all was going to stay home the day after Thanksgiving because she isn't going to come in. That day she said we all could just work from home. Okay thats good I could work with that. But today she sends me an IM (she works from home a lot) and asks what my plans are for the friday after Thanksgiving. She needs to know if I am coming into the office or if I wanted the day off I could have it I just had to use my vacation time.

Which okay I admit in all rights .... if I want the day off I SHOULD take a vacation day. But why just me why not the other team members? Why do they get the option to work from home and save their vacation days OR get the option to use sick leave so they could save their vacation times for real vacations. I mean of course I am going to just take my vacation day ... If I was to work I would just be coming in the office to sit for 8 hours and read a book or just lay my head on my desk and nap like I do every friday because everyone on my team either works half day on fridays or works from home (Once again I dont get that option because the gov. pays US to be here and someone has to be in the office)

When all said and done yes I took my vacation day ...... but i still feel like I got shafted compared to the rest of the team members.

Well Miya, you're low man right? That would be why^^. You could be in my husband's position. He ONLY gets Thursday off and has to work not only Friday but Saturday also. Really sucks.

F'n corporate politics.. grrrr.. /comfort Miya. First ask a colleague at the same job level as you, preferably someone who has the same position(but not quite your friend), if they are required to take a vaca day. If so, then at least you know you aren't being singled out. If NOT, then I'd confront your boss in a calm and diplomatic way about this concern. Most Jackass managers tend to keep stepping on subordinates that don't speak up for themselves so nip this one in the bud before it becomes an ongoing issue.

Well if we are basing on when everyone started on this project I hold seniority. Now if we are basing it on job status ... Executive Assistant will always be the lowest one on the pole. As of right now there are only 6 of us on this project. The other 25 people wont start for another 3 months or so. Sooo its me the EA with 5 Tech Engineers. So i guess i just need to get used to be shafted.

Jazper this is the gov. we talking about here. Took me 3 months to be able to get pens and paper! We have all kinds of cool equipment in our data center all boxed up since Aug ... waiting for the okay to get our niffty speedy PCs and the techs their fun toys to build our servers and what not. So yeah spare laptops >.> I would be dreaming haha.

Nawwww take the vacation day and then just get even with them at a later date. Yes I'm an evil person^^. Next time you know they really need you, call in and use a sick day. That'll teach 'em to take advantage of you^^.

PS. My hubby is #1 driver for his work and he's 3rd man on the totem pole for Feltes pit. Therefore, he "gets" to work Friday and Saturday. Guess it all depends on how you look at it eh?

Maybe its because of the ancient saying "nice guys finish last", Miya. I remember when we were in DA together you were one of the nicest people I knew. If your the same RL, maybe your boss just knows she can get away with asking you that because you are a nice gal and wouldn't question it? Dunno though, that is just one theory it could be from when I used to know you well =)

I guess I could say I get to work Friday and Saturday... I am lucky to have Thursday off as we are coming the point were some places (I'm in a retail related area BTW) are acutally open and having Thanksgiving day sales. I am a little peved that I have to work Saturday because its supposed to be my weekend off but I won't cause I need the over time after being sick and missing work a couple days last week. All said it could be worse... my problem is who I am spending Thanksgiving with... my family of my boyfriends... decisions... decisions

Well I guess my boss thought about things. I am unable to go to my friends for Thanksgiving so she is going to let me work from home . Also, she is letting me go home today at 2:30pm (and we are still charging the client 8 hours of work). All because 2 weeks ago I stayed up all night reading our 200+ page proposal and working on a document for our lead tech . Me thinks that lead tech had a little influence in this decision after one of my tech buddies slipped it through the grapevine to him about my situation.

I used to work for the local govt. as well a few years ago, I must admit the job is easy, the pay is decent..but the people just suck. Never have I worked in a place where people around you actually want you to fail and make you as miserable as themselves. Not to mention the bias that goes on in there just made me want to vomit. Of course Im sure it isnt this bad in some workplaces, but the "competing" IT department's employee's arent even allowed to talk in the hallways things were so bad when I left. Management actually believes they are conspiring to form a mutiny or some such far fetched idea.

Anyways, get outta govt. and work for a job where they actually care about their employees and strive for their success. Happy Turkey Day Miya <3<3
