Shin Megami MMO, 'nuff said. They've got 20,000(~7,500 left) beta keys at Filefront, I'm downloading my version now.

I'll have to wait until probably Friday to actually play it, but from what I've seen on my roommate's computer, the game's fucking beautiful, and he's got an old, crappy computer.

I played the Japanese version for a while and I loved it. I thought if I understood it more it would be even better, the story seemed to progress regularly and be really cool. Gonna give the English version a shot. Thanks for the heads up.

Played for a few minutes, it's frickin' beautiful using the Shin Megami style.

Movement's a little clunky, and it crashed after about 10 minutes, but it's still pretty enjoyable. Made it to level 2 already, they've got standard attack, but they also have different special moves you can use, but at the cost of hp. No voice acting though.

The refer to the adventurers as Demon Busters, but unfortunately they abbreviate that to DB. Every time they call someone a DB I keep thinking they mean douche bag.

"That DB sacrificed everything for that little girl"

The skill system is pretty cool, there are no classes, you can build your character to be whatever type of player you want to be. The way they do that is through "expertise."

Basically, as you keep doing certain actions, attacking, casting, shooting, using skills, talking, etc, you gain experience in those areas. If you do it enough(there is a progress bar), you rank up those expertise and you can get new skills. During the training, they give you Agi(Fire), and explain how the system works. But, you cannot max out all expertise traits, there is a set maximum to the amount of expertise points you can accumulate; this max goes up as you level, but it's always there.

You can select which expertise's you want to develop, which is very useful if you want to focus on one role; you can level up the expertise for your role without having to worry about wasting it on other expertise's. It's a very interesting, and certainly unique system for an MMO-style game; but I can see some problems early on as people won't know what they're doing and screw themselves later on. I did not see a way to remove experience from an expertise, I only saw to turn on/off which ones gain experience.

When you use the skills you've learned, there is a charging time, usually done through a particle effect about your character. Once the effect is over, the skill will take effect(for guard/counter) or you can use the skill at full power(Agi/Rush/Spin). You can use the attack skills before fully charged, they just do less damage.

So me downloading the game from filefront constitutes a beta key or do I need to get a key emailed to me from the company?

There should be a message popping up on the filefront website that lists your key, but I never had to enter my key in; so I'm not sure. You do have to make an account with the company, but it's a free registration.

Hmmm NoScript might have bitten me in the butt.

I thought of that, so I went to filefront in IE, and didn't see one either. Although since I didn't have to enter in the key I got from my roommate(he actually got accepted into the beta), I'm thinking it might not be required. I'd try installing it and seeing if it'll let you log on via the aeria games account like it did me.

Yeah it is still downloading. My ISP has apparently throttled my bandwidth, so things are progressing slowly. I'll install and see what happens.

Seems pretty fun, but the begining of the game is a constant wonder of "Do I used my super overpowered Cerberus that levels like a gimp, or work on something weak that'll eventually become stronger sooner."

If you guys want to use a custom resolution, go in to your MegaTen directory, open up the OutsideOption.txt, and simply put in your desired X/Y values in the appropriate line.

You can even use this to get widescreen resolutions.

If you guys want to group up for anything, let me know. My name in game should be fairly obvious.

I'm Level 14 and on Act 5 I think, the gray plate dungeon in the tunnels. I don't mind helping you guys out if you need it, since my pixie is two levels behind.

I wish I could remake my character. They didn't have an explanation for the stats until I was level 4, and I ended up initially building my character for melee stats and my character is going to be a ranged character. Even deleting your character doesn't work, so mine has some useless stats; unless I want to pay money for a second character during the beta.
