Should I even bother?

As some of you know, I'm getting back into XI in a few months. I just heard about the huge outbreak that happened with the "update stopping at 1 file left, then ending up at a reinstall of Windows" thing. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm just as addicted to XI as the next guy, and I love this game as much as the next guy, it's amazing. But there's no way in hell I'm actually risking having to reinstall all of Windows and potentially risking other important files to play a game, which will, sadly, eventually end.

So, I ask those of you who aren't totally sucked in by the game and it's awesomeness, should I even bother? Or do you think that this will happen to me as it did countless others? I mean, in the past 10 minutes I've read at least 4 or 5 rants about this happening to them, and 20 + that have said "Yeah, I know a guy that happened to". I'm thinking about giving all this up and just using the money for hookers or something...:crazy: Honestly, I've tried 5 or 6 times to play this game, maybe it's just not "meant to be":badwords: .

Anyway...what are your opinions on this? For those of you that this terrible screw up (:badwords: you whoever screwed up), how bad is it? Bad enough to not even try? I'm already known to have the worst luck known to man with XI and trying to install this behemoth.
 
What actually happened to them? i had it screw up when i did the big download a week or so ago.

It got to the last file to download then just started skipping or something for no apparent reason then it froze...i was like "shit i just spent 3 hours doing this". Unwilling to download it again i decided to leave it frozen and see what happened. About 10-20 mins later it just said "update finished" and all was well.

Don't know if that helps or not...

If i were you i would just back-up anything you couldn't afford to lose then go and give it a shot.
 
Hmm..alright, thanks. Yeah, my hope has just jumped considering nearly everyone who said "I just waited it out" has been fine. Had a scare there for a second...I've always been very patient so I guess this will finally pay off.
 
I thought mine was hanging on that last file for a rather long time =\
 
Yea mine stalled at 1 file for a few. Kinda scared me then my internet went out when i finally got on. Yesterday sucked.
 
mine wiped at all my PC reinstaling everything now :( i got 5yrs of patchs

Thought the game came out in 2002? And anyway, aren't you the one who got lost in Konschtat Highlands a couple months back?
 
nno it came out xmas 2001 and got it then
will take a pic of my cds see the copy right 2001-2002

This exact same happened to both me and my gf last night. I'll admit it worried me for a few minutes, but i left it up, went and did something else and 5 minutes later download was complete.

Well hopefully if I just leave mine on there like you all did it will work...I've been trying to get this game on my computer since beggining of '02. :irked:
