i've been thinking a lot about this lately, now i'll bring it to these boards for some more insight on the matter.

I've only been playing a grand total of 9 months, while that doesn't seem to be a lot to most of you my game time hours are probably the same as some that have been playing 2yrs. my cut back time is now at 73hrs a week, that happened after i got a lame job just the keep a lil money coming in. my last job i played at work then i took a few months off work and lived in this game.

in my days in this game, what have i accomplished? i feel nothing, few remember me for things i've done (so it seems) and others pass me and friends leave me. i already feel over the past few months i've slowly been moving farther and farther away from wanting to stay. i tried reviving my love for the game lvling blm but lfp has gotten old 2 days nothing just not any fun there. i make money easy now because i can pretty much solo bcnm's by myself, i craft not 100 but you don't need to be 100 the make money. i lvl jobs but lose intrest before getting anywhere.

I've achieved most of the "cool" gear that i've wanted and drooled over now, except some ra/ex items. now that i have it i wonder more and more to myself WHY? i farm with a sky shell, which was one of the things i wanted the do in this game after seeing a video of a LS kill gods. yet my schedule keeps me from making it to the actual fights. no fun there :/ i promised my g/f in game i wouldn't quit but i feel less drive to play everyday that i'm on. i'm stuck i feel like, maybe this is where my rl comes in. i've never been focused enough on one thing long enough in rl the finish it. is that how my game is going to turn out? I'm knowledgable in the game, yet i suppose i'm just a no body that doesn't know anything yet.

i've got 3 well lvld characters i've had more, i'm a decent lvl in crafting as well. i just dont know which direction i want to go anymore. 75 was the goal, but as i near it i feel like its more talk then what its actually going to do for me. what good is merriting if your never going to use them? what good is the high class gear if all i'm going to do is xp? why spend all this money and time in a world that doesn't exist? maybe i'd feel different if i spoke japanese, and could have people that could play on my time schedule? all these what if's run through my head, and i can't answer one of them. do i expect to much to fast? am i doing something wrong? should i stay or should i go? i feel like a lost teenager again, but i'm mostly a few taru's with a single hume mom now trying to make it in the big world yet i have no direction of where i should or want to go anymore.

I've never actually said it - or maybe I have, I don't know - but I've always thought you've played too much. I'd burn out too if I had all those characters and leveled them that fast.

I found you lost in Windurst your first night in the game and explained the basics to you - and I helped you off and on after that - but our play styles are obviously different. I still have a great deal of fun keeping a slower, steadier pace. No wonder I'm a BST now.

Take some time away from the game. Cut your playing hours down (which you should have done long ago). 73 hours a week is disturbing, to say the least. Do whatever you think will make you happy and healthy. It's just a game.

If your that much of an addict you need to quit. Pick up something that helps your life, I see FF as I see drinking and smoking (i dont smoke), they all are fun but not really helping you in anyway.

neyla, your words mean more to me then anything anyone else could say. you've been there through my high's and lows. i've always done everything the try and be what you would think is "good" in your eye's. lol even though i've fouled that up a few times :p

I do think i've played this game to much, i'd like to slow down and play less but it seems that when i do that i lose intrest all together and never come back :( it happened with my addiction to medal of honor. tonight is going to be my first break from ffxi where i wont be on AT ALL not bazaring not getting on late at night even if i am drunk off my ass, i'm stepping back to try and find myself in rl again. Its been at least 6 months since i've had a break like this o.O and i've only been playing 9 :/ while i hope i can find a peacefull medium, i ask for the help from others to get there.

I do wana get 75 though, i feel foolish not being 75 :/ i got so obsessed with making money that i stopped lvling for a month just the get that, i got board with rdm at 65 whm well yeah, you say whm is cheap i say it isn't cause i only play it baked out of my mind and that gets expensive espicially after 63 lvls of it :/ Thf was fun for the ride but for some reason i feel like once someone is 75 they get this respect that i've yet to achieve for some reason? is it there, or am i just retarted like that?

maybe i need to just start helping people, think of all the people i could help with that amount of time! i'm going to think about all these things while i'm getting high on the couch tonight not playing ffxi and talking to friends. i'm going to make my decisions and i guess we'll all see how they come out.

more insight from others is always welcome :)

i'm an addict to everything i like, thats my problem in life. the thing is how long i stay addicted to it who knows. i always go overboard, the length of time is different for each thing though.

Getting level 75 doesn't automatically earn you any respect. Anyone can achieve it with enough time and patience. But yeah, from the sounds of it you'd probably be best off leaving the game for at least a while, if not permanently. If you don't come back, that's fine. That's healthy. That's how it was meant to be. It's certainly healthier than what you've been doing all these months I've seen you skyrocket in levels. Again, it's just a game.

Just out of curiosity, how old are you passions? 73 hours of gaming a week is quite a lot, that really doesn't leave time for work or school. How do you support yourself?

20 and i work full time. i've basically tossed out my rl in place of playing this game :/

i also have cut out sleep on some nights and sleep an average of 5-6 others

At least you've finally admitted there's a problem. As cliched as it is, that really is the first step to recovery.

i admited that to my rl friends a week or so ago, i told them i'd slow down and cut back after getting 75 :/ yet to get that though. i'll make a turn around i just need to find my self again. i just hope that i can do it, i'm as addicted to this game as a crack addict i think. they at least get help centers, where's my help center >.<

Cut back to 73 hours a week?
Holy effing shite.

If the options are stay or go, you should go.
"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

^^ That's a quote, not directed AT you per say, but damn.
Do somethig else for sure.

I totally just wrote a message saying the OP should beat off more, then realized I should probably go to bed before I give out more "advice". ~.~;

Passions I'll be honest with ya, this game is fuckin me up too in real life. I have to step back and try and focus on my own stuff. I have to find a college and get back into school. Instead I'm playing FFXI. I just realized this yesterday and told most of my friends I'll be on from time to time. So I'm an addict too. Just check out the warning before you start playing. Cause now I know what SE meant. >.>

lol me and my friend used to laugh at that warning, now they point it out to me

Holy shit. well no wonder I've never seen you before. You've been playing the whole time I've been in Iraq. 73 hours a week though? I've done that once or twice, but for sustained periods of time? How could you handle all the morons that you would run into in game all the time?

because i've meet more friends then moron's lol. and 73 hours is "cut back", my peek was bout 125hrs a week and that was for about a month. lol i almost made it 1 whole night, got on about 3:30am stayed on till 5 last night or well this morning :/

Heh idk you that well, but I decided to take a break from FF last month, was addicted to, not 73hrs a week though lol, but still fairly bad, and feeling a helluva lot better than I was before I quit. Although at this point I really don't know if I will go back, but like others said the best action for you is to either take a break or quit, just look inside yourself and decide what you need to do. I know it was hard as hell for me, have a lot of friends on game, but I still talk to some via AIM and/or forums.

The addictive process is an interesting subject. I took a couple college courses on it, though I am by no means an expert, and I certainly didn't get the message myself till recently (after playing EQ for years, literally, over 500 days combined /played on my various EQ toons).

Your case is pretty similar to mine, working fulltime and gaming fulltime with some overtime. It's difficult to get out of it because it seems like everything is fine. You can pay your bills, maybe put a little on the side, and have lots of fun. In that sense gaming is far less destructive than substance addictions, and they really tend to fuck up the "pay your bills" part.

My advice; Quit. Just like that. No cutting back, no gaming on Friday nights only, just quit.

The only way to control addiction is to deprive yourself of being able to follow it. It's like AA I suppose, once you are an alcoholic, you will always be one, for the rest of your life. The difference is that those who follow the addiction are dull every day by 6pm, and those who don't know that the only way to not be in that state is to never ever have any alcohol again, ever, not a piece of candy that has some rum in it, not a piece of cake with some Grand Manier burning off of it, nothing.

Same with gaming.
I quit, many times, and I always returned to a game. MMO, single player, anything. I quit WoW, and when I took QCDN back I figured it would be ok to hang with some QCDNers in FFXI for a bit. Big mistake, I got instantly sucked back in. I could not control my playtime, as soon as I would have some time I would be on FFXI. So I quit FFXI, again.

I am not "clean" just yet, I am in recovery, I know that the only way to do something in my life is to not game.

Do I miss EQ and WoW, or any other games I immensely enjoyed. You bet! Do I envy those who are able to just game for whatever time they alotted to gaming? Absolutely. Will I ever pick up another game, any game? I hope not, I will try hard not to, but I also have to take it a day at a time, as cheesy as it sounds.

I am unable to eliminate computers from my home due to work. With a computer at home, the possibility to game is there. I once was so desperate for gaming that I played solitare. It was fun, and I hated myself for doing it afterwards.

I am going back and forth between whether I should start something like AA in this town, but for gamers. I know that I can't be the only one who given the opportunity would spend every wake moment gaming.

Gaming is fun, it's instant gratification (even if the game sucks for a while), and it's a worry free state. Gaming doesn't do anything for personal advancement, unless you are in CPL or PGL or one of those.

Reality is a harsh mistress, and if you don't want her to whip you silly, then you will have to look at your life, at your retirement plans (the earlier you start working on those, the easier it is, and the more you will have), at your career path, stuff you used to like before you started gaming, stuff you see other people do and wish you could do as well (I wish I could play a fiddle, and be good at it). Things like that.

Of course, all those things may be meaningless to you, in which case; Game on!
