I always wondered about this and for those that don't already know, shout does have a maximum range. A lot of people think its the entire zone but its not. At least in Al Zahbi it is..... (drum roll).. a wopping 3 map squares! Just tested it a few minutes ago. Determined this east/west.. don't know how it applies when you start moving diagonally. I wonder if its any further outside the city? Maybe i'll test it later or someone else can if you are bored. Anyway just thought I'd share, because maybe your shouts aren't being heard (maybe thats a good thing though) :P

Props to Alvon for helping ^^

/shout is the entire zone... unless they for some reason coded Al Zahbi different, which is something I doubt.

/say on the other hand, is not the entire zone.

lol if you think it's unlimited ... go to the dunes and test it...^^;

I just wonder if its only 3 map squares everywhere? Maybe sound travels farther in some zones. I have heard from others its up to 5 but dunno...

Why does it even matter?

It doesn't. Unless of course it's on Jeopardy. They like to ask random knowledge questions.

maybe you shout farther on darksday with a new moon standing southwest while /sit'ting in sunny weather?

I don't even shout really. If it's a raise in the dunes it's: /sea whitemage level 25-75

If it's help with a mission, it's talk to someone in the linkshell. If it'sselling an item, AH it. The only time shout makes sense is when you're looking for a Tele, since as a whitemage I know, it's beneficial to stay hidden more than seen.

Shout is more for emergency situations, if any, and really unneccessary for anything other than annoying other people. However, a lot of newer players seem to have an infacination with it. To them, I will one day turn shouts off on my chat filter.

Ok, you selected Random Knowledge Questions for $2000, Here's your Question:
Why does the shout distance in the online video game "Final Fantasy XI" only cover certain areas in certain zones?"

That's why it matters.

lmao u suck making up quotes not real ones -_-

I never said it was the most useful information. I just posted it because I found it interesting and someone else may. I rarely if ever need to shout but what made me think about was being in a zone listening for pick-up Assault parties. If you are at the mog house and they are at the commisioner office you won't hear them shouting. Just goes to show that no matter what you say or try to share here there will always be somone waiting to cirticize you. And yes, all this is in preparation of FFXI Trivial Pursuit being released in June.

If it doesn't cover the entire zone, then how come you can hear someone shouting for a teleport at the guide stone, when you're by the Signet guy in Lower Jeuno?

And let's not forget the casino shouts at the Jeuno AH -.-;

shout does have a maximum distance, i've just never cared to see how far. For instance mordion gaol is 1 zone, and just many different rooms, (theyre set up in a cube with a large distance between them.) The effective shout distance is not enough so that people in adjacent rooms could hear each other shout. Saves having to code limiters on shout distance into GM abilities, or /noshout flags I guess.

lol Mistra I almost did something like that, just not with Blazn's name. I got bored before I started though.
