Good morning/evening ladies and gentlemen. There are a select few of you who may by chance recognize my name, as I used to play FFXI once upon a time.
I'm here because, well, I have a buddy that is kind of itching to get back onto FFXI. I have a bit of a dilema, you see, I'll admit I do have a few fond memories of my early days on FFXI, as well as some rather dis-tastful memories of my end-game days on FFXI. I figure, before I decide what to do exactly, I'd get a feel for the game again, as I'm certain its changed quite a bit since I played.
The last thing I really remember goin on in FFXI, was the introduction of a "friend" NPC thing that you could summon with an earring or whatever. So, if a few of you wouldnt mind, I'm curious as to what major changes have taken place since that time (about a year ago I think?). And i'm not talkin about the expansion content, i'm more concerned with gameplay, stat mods, ability changes, etc. More specifically in relation to the paladin job, as anyone who remembers me knows, I am forever a paladin, in every damned RPG i'll ever play, haha. How's the solo game? I remember gettin solo exp was pretty much impossible back in the day. Is this server still infested to the core with gil sellers? How are NM's anyways? They started putting rare items into BCNMs around the time i quit, did that really make a difference?

Anyways, thats a LOT of questions, I didnt mean to get carried away, but ANY information you're willing to share would be appreciated. I'm not sure if i should talk myself out of getting back to FFXI for a while, of if it would be time well spent having fun. Thank you all very much for your time, take care.

PS. these questions are more-so related to a new character, i'm not certain whether or not my old 75 pally is even around, i'm sure SE deleted him ages ago, so i'd be starting from scratch. thanks again, w00t.

the new Sentinel owns. It's like a mini invincible now. Straight damage mitigation and greatly increased enmity for 30 seconds, 5 minute cooldown.

Shield change. Now shields block a % of the incoming damage, which is unlike the old shield mechanics, but they also block incoming damage a LOT more often. The amount of damage and frequency of shield procs is based on a) the size of your shield, and b) your shield skill. Naturally, you want to have lots of +shield skill now. There's I think 4 sizes of shields, from smallest to largest respectively, you go from (high proc rate, less dmg reduction)->(low proc rate, huge dmg reduction) from smallest to largest.

Auto Refresh. Yep... we haves it now at level 35, and it is beautiful. At higher level parties, you most likely wont even need a refresher, but now having one makes you a nonstop all-night tank. Using parade gorget and "sanction" the new ToAU version of signet, you can achieve 3mp/tick refresh rather easily without refresh. Corsairs can boost this up to a grand total of +6mp/tick with a smn in the party, +5mp/tick, meaning you'd have 8mp/tick just from corsair's refresh roll. This stacks with RDM refresh and also BRD ballad.

Some of the new merits are very nice, including one such new skill (75 onry) that lets you convert TP directly into MP!!!!!!!!!!!

That's all that comes to mind atm.

How's the solo game? I remember gettin solo exp was pretty much impossible back in the day.

Better. A lot more wierd subjobs are acceptable for solo'ing. PLD/RDM in your case would be a great solo job, or PLD/BLU... and supposedly PLD/NIN is now a feasible endgame tank. Go figure eh? The most recent patch gave a decent boost to a few things.

A) Signet now gives you increased hHP and hMP, as well as no more TP loss while resting when you have it on.

B) Bonus exp in smaller groups. The smaller the group, the higher the exp bonus, but you still can't exceed the cap. This also means solo'ing gives a bit of a boost to your exp. Just don't expect to chain 200+exp without a PL or anything.

C) EM and lower mobs now you get a bigger defense/evasion bonus against, meaning you won't get your face beat in for trying to fight EM or lower mobs. This only applies, I believe, if you are locked on to said monster. This means any linked mobs would still get full damage and accuracy against you.

Is this server still infested to the core with gil sellers? How are NM's anyways?

Slowly getting better and better. The latest patch made many commonly hoarded RMT NMs poppable with items you can farm from regular mobs around the spawn point. Pallas, Sozu Rogberry, Alkyoneus, to name a few... oh and Ulikummi is now a popped NM, too. RMT are getting served one patch at a time. Among that, more drops were made Rare/EX, some notably HNM drops such as Strider Boots were made Rare/Ex, for example.

They started putting rare items into BCNMs around the time i quit, did that really mke a difference?

While now there's many Rare/EX versions of certain items hanging around still, a lot of their NON rare/ex counterparts can be found in BCNMs now. I don't think the BCNM changes have made much difference, cept now instead of everyone doing the utsu:ni BCNM and whatnot you see a great influx of people rushing to get kraken clubs and PCC's.

Hope that helps. I was very pessimistic about coming back... till I found out about all these glorious changes, and I had the intention of playing a tank this time around. Now's a perfect time to come back to the game. Many extremely expensive items are a lot cheaper than ever. Such as SH, now like 1mil, vermy, like 2mil? A lot of RMT and hacker/cheaters got banned, meaning a lot of gil was removed from the economy.

To add to what Svina said, they also added the Shield Mastery trait, which gives you TP for a blocked shield hit, and since the shield proc rate was upped by a huge chunk, you gain TP fairly fast. They also added Category 2 merits, that give you access to new Abilities/Traits.

Fealty is an ability that gives a big resistance to enfeebling
Chivalry will convert your TP into MP
Guardian will reduce your enmity lost when you have Sentinel active
and Iron Will will grant you spell interruption down when you have Rampart active.

As you can see, SE has stepped their game up and are actually trying to keep their customers this time around.

wonderful. thanks Svina and Legomyeggo for your replies. Sounds like SE has made some nice improvements. Two more questions and I think i'm good. I don't take it SE has allowed FFXI to be ran in windowed mode on the PC yet, is windower still around and decently reliable? I'm not gonna get on the game and be a cheater, but by no means will i confine myself to full-screen mode, haha. And lastly, whats the player mentality on the server, meaning, are the masses still a bunch of selfish assholes, or do we get along any better than we used to. I remember a lot of confrontation between guilds among other quarells. anyways, thanks again so much for your time. By the sound of things thus far, i'll prolly end up getting back on, at least for a little while to try it out. w00t.

SE said a windowed version of FFXI is in the works. There's still the other windowers around.

And people will be people. There's still always friendly people around though, so all hope is not yet lost.

PS: I'm in your sig. Keekleberries

The player base hasn't changed. Just some people's e-peens are a little more enlarged than you might remember, I've had a lot of good party members to date. Maybe I have just been getting lucky though.

To Eleifrid:
You are a pretty cool mod, but I am shocked that you would participate in a derail. Shame on you!!!! Do you need a spanking?

To the OP
Just so we get back on track I have a question for the OP. I remember you, but then I remember EVERYONE. What makes you think that those that remember you are a "select few" like knowing you was leet or sumthin. Or maybe the "select few" are people who remember things and the rest of us have shit for brains?

Still trying to figure it out.

I was more-so implying that its been a LONG time since i've been on FFXI, and I never really played a major roll in the end-game scene, so I kinda figured the number of ppl who would actually recognize my character would be few and far between.

Still debating if I should try and get SE to resurect my old char, or just start from scratch. How is Quetz for new characters? I've heard FFXI has a problem with not having enough low-lvl char's. Either way, I suppose it'll be kinda tough comin back, i gave like ALL my gil away when i quit, haha.

PS. i WAS 'leet' or somethin muahahahahhaahhaah. j/k ^.^

making money is kinda hard since all sources of income seem somewhat unstable

try to get your old char back it'll help tons

ya, seems like income is all kinda F'd up, since the big money makers seem to have been changed to forced pops or rare/ex. hows the crafting market? I remember it was basically you dumped millions upon millions of gil into it to get to lvl 100, then you could make some decent money.

You'd be hard put to find a craft to break even on within 2 years after you reach 100. I could be wrong I suppose, but I've studied the market a lot.

This site is cool, go check it out and it will give you an idea of current market trends. www.ffxiah.com

Obviously you haven't farmed dark crystals and sleepshrooms of the toadstools in Ghelsba Outpost. Little circle tunnel up by the watch lizards, go round in there till about lvl 10 and youll make some huge bank.

@Twille: Also, i'd try and get your old char back. Don't know if it'd work but starting over would suck, its been a while for you though so maybe not as bad. Also i don't think it would be to hard to start fresh. Dunes will suck because, well they are the dunes but other than that it should be fresh.

Hey bro! Nice to hear from ya!

As far as starting over, it really wouldnt be that bad i dont think. Its rather easy to make good money early, all you gotta do is lvl all your jobs together. IE: WAR, RDM, THF to 7, BLM, WHM, MNK to 8. you know the drill, share gear and horde crystals. w00t. anyways, i'll be in touch with SE support tomorrow to see if getting my old char is even feasable at this point, wish me luck, lol.
