Now, alot of people are probably gonna slap me for not knowing this, but I seriously don't know...a few people have told me that subbing a job that has higher skill rating in something makes it easier for it to skillup on the main job (i.e. Thief gets A+ Evasion Skill, so subbing it makes it easier to skillup eva if the main job has less than A+)

I'm assuming that's a load of crap, but just thought I'd seek feedback on this, 'cause I really don't know. Thanks in advance ^^;

Nah only if there are passive traits on the sj that the main doesn't have ie evasion bonus on thf, which would make it somewhat easier to dodge attacks but not by much

a BRD/WAR will have a higher sword skill then a BRD/WHM etc you get the point
and it does not help skill up just the skill cap

Uh.. no. SJ has nothing to do with skill on your main, unless your main doesn't have that skill, and you'll get it at your sub job's level. (Assuming your SJ has that skill, anyway >.>)

On topic; No, your SJ will not help with skill ups.

thought it rasied cap by a bit?

Sub job has no bearing on the skills the main job has.

As for Mish's question, the skill just indicates how high you can take it, not how fast you'll skill it up. In the event of shield, parry, guard, you actually have to have the skill process to have a chance at skilling up.

Yeah, I've been wanting good skill ups on my sword since it's at 231 and 9 away from savage blade which I liked. Did a couple skill up ptys in the Boyahda tree but got a skill up on it maybe once in a while. I probably have to fight T+ with it though for better skill ups.

I think gear with less of skill will skill up better when that skill is initated. So if you want to skill up eva, then try to get rid of all your eva gear. At least I think I heard something like that before.

Well the thing about evasion skill is that it's the easy one of the defensive skills - you have a skillup chance when you evade *or* when you get hit, including getting hit from 0 due to Stoneskin or something. Dunno if you can skillup when you blink damage (with blink/utsu).

To skillup parry, guard, or shield, it actually has to kick in. This isn't too bad for shield, since shield kicks in pretty often if you use a small shield. But parry is unpleasant and guard is just plain painful.

Anyway, here's the general rule for skillups (not applicable to things you can skillup by casting on yourself or other players): the enemy you're using must be Even Match or stronger in order to cap your skill. If it's 1 level below you, it'll take your skill to whatever it capped at, 1 level ago (i.e. when it was EM). If it's 10 levels below you, it'll take your skill to whatever it capped at, 10 levels ago. And so on. The actual number it'll take you to, varies by how good you are with the skill.

This makes low-rated not only cap lower, but also be harder to skillup. Say you're trying to get your last point on a D skill (caps at 210 at 75) compared to an A skill (caps at 276 at 75), for some melee skill or other. (What I call A, some other people call A+, just a matter of semantics.) Either way you've got to hit that friendly EM+ mob. But the person with D is hitting it with 209 skill trying to get to 210, and the person with A is hitting it with 275 skill trying to get to 276.

Needless to say, the person with 275 skill is gonna be hitting more accurately (and is more likely to hit for more than 0 which is also a requirement, although it's generally not an issue) than the person with 209 skill. They have a 66 point lead, which is quite a bit. This shows up even more painfully if you don't skillup on EM, but instead go skillup on T-VT.

Also note another consequence of this - someone with A skill can hit 210 on a level 62 mob, because level 62 is when A can reach 210 (212, actually). Someone with D skill has to use a level 75 mob though. Which makes organizing skillups by the actual *skill level* somewhat impractical, unless everyone has similar rankings in their skills. Because "skilling up to 200" to one person may mean Kuftal Robber Crabs while to another person it may mean Boyahda Steelshells.

I don't know whether or not the *chance* of skillup on any given hit is worse for A skill compared to D skill or something. I wouldn't be surprised if it were, but it might not be.

However your subjob can give you access to weapon skills that you wouldn't normally get. IE: Subbing RNG for ranged weapon skills. I've noticed that subbing BLU to RDM gave me a bunch of weapons skills that I can't normally use like Red Lotus Blade and Vorpal Blade :).

I'm pretty sure all skills grow as if they were A+, in regards to the level of the mob you need to fight to raise it, but your personal cap is the only limitation.

Say you have E skill(200 cap at 75,) you'd never have to fight anything higher than a level 60 mob to actually hit that cap.

I think it's actually the your individual cap. My sword id 240/250 (B+) and I need to fight high DCs to get any skillups now.

It'd be much easier if I could fight EPs ; ;

Vil has it.

Let's say you're a 75 THF that wants to skillup sword (D ranking, 210 cap at level 75). It's currently level 190.

Looking at somepage, Robber crabs in boyahda are level 62-66. Your sword cap at 66 is level 194, so at most you could get to 194 sword on those crabs. Probably not the best choice.

Let's say you had a paladin friend, with the same level greatsword, 190 (PLD has a B rating in GSD- caps at 250 at level 75).

On robber crabs- your paladin friend's GSD would have capped at 215 at 66, so he would still have a few levels to go. Of course, you could both suck it up and whiff some DC-T Steelshells upstairs for a while.

This is why steelshells are pretty popular to skill on- they last forever, especially when not dispelled, and are in just the right level range to cap on without whiffing too much.
for reference, I'm 250/250 sword, 231/250 dagger, and 242/256 club on whm ^^;

one question what lv brds get 150 skill lv in sword?

I think instead of getting into a skill up pty in the Boyahda tree on steelshells, I should go rdm/nin and just solo some EM steelshells and fight those no matter how long it takes. Since they don't kill you as easily, they just take forever to kill.

This is only somewhat true. Thief does get evasion bonus job trait which gives a slight increase of evasion to thiefs; however, it does not directly effect how well you get skill ups in evasion. Evasion is one of the wierd job traits where you don't actually need the skill to proc to get a skill up. You can still get hit and get a skill up, but certain subjobs do provide certain advantages to skilling up. For instance, subbing PLD helps improve the chance of shield effect occurring due to the job trait shield mastery. Another would be subbing monk for martial arts to increase attack speed of hand-to-hand weapons.
