An LS friend and I got a PT together ealier today...
Four of us...in the Dunes.
THF, DRK/WAR, WHM, MNK.
We were doing awesome...And I was having alot of fun...
This was the first time I got to PT in the Dunes...
And the first time I was in a PT that lasted more than half an hour.
We played to the point where everyone leveled one time.

Our WHM left...
So, we found another one...
Eager to get the PT started up again...The remaining 3 of us were excited...
Especially, after it took a small while to recruit another WHM.

The new WHM met up with us...
And, pretty much, immediately starts bossing us around.
I know people have been playing for longer than the 3 of us...
But, that doesn't mean we deserve any less respect.

After a little while of this new WHM's arguing with us...
He decided...We shouldn't fight ANYTHING unless we have a decent Tank.

I've seen many threads about this in various places...
How some players are afraid to think "outside the box".
We were doing wonderfully before with the first WHM we found...

I mean...At level 15(+/- 1 level) is it really THAT necessary to have a Tank?

generally it is yeah but the drk/war could have easily been tank so the hm had nothing to bitch about.. I've seen a drk have more defense than a war at the same level while wearing that -def gsword they have. Stuff doesnt hit hard anough to really worry about war/pld/nin only as far as tanking is concerned. Youre too low a level for any differences to show with jobs that wear heavy armour.

@ Khajit
That's what I thought. We all told this WHM that we would do perfectly fine with a DRK/WAR...
He kept insisting that was only a "makeshift Tank".

pretty much at that lvl any decent melee can tank. at those lvl'd ive ended up tanking mobs as drk, nin, mnk, war, and bst. sure some jobs are going to do better than others but its all about keeping the mages alive. and it is very true that alot of players are scared to think outside the box. usually your best bet is to just tell that person that you have already been successful with that setup before and if they are to scared to try it out that they can leave the party if they want. with yall setup you could easily tank as long as your thf has their marksmanship skill capped and they have blind bolts. once on of those suckers land pretty much any job that has pretty decent evasion skill and a lil evasion gear can tank with barely getting hit. pretty much any type of party setup can work very well sure some will pull in more experience but its the parties where you have to change up the play style is what will definitely develop player skills.

I tanked 13-20 as mnk/war... Monks are the 2nd best tank in the game till about 30... Paladins being the best of course... High Vit, VERY high hate, Dodge, Counter... Monk is fun. :3 You were fine, the whm was a jerk.

i solo all jobs (try to) to 18 for BC lol got 53 from 1-18 thf lol then did bcnm 40 as a 20 war :P and won lol a old trick used for 4 people in bcnm lol

It IS needed to have a tank, even at those levels. BUT, at those levels, tank means 'Person with most defence', not 'PLD or NIN onry'.

Person with most defense... and Provoke. Tee hee.

Pretty much any job that can equip a shield, has native skill in it and parry are your best bets for tanks in the Dunes. Monk really falls behind since the changes to shield have pretty much obliterated Guard in usefulness in the lower levels.

Wow

Ok, 1st, all great points about not restricting yourself as far as tanks go. Most anything will work as long as they have a general idea what they are doin. Se made it kinda easy with all the damn Enimity+ gear from the events, those and the +2 facemask, any combo with /war and shield will do just fine. But as with everything it's gonna change every time, use some sense when finding people.

2nd, and I think the more important of the two ideas here, is the treatment recieved by the three Pt members by this whm. Sounds to me like the classic 16 year old, rank 5 Whm/Rdm that brought his Leetness and bestowed it upon your Pt. BS. We were all noobs once, I don't care what anyone says. And that being the case, you were all clueless once. Now from Lv 10 and on, you had two paths to go down. You could be a sponge, learn as much as you can and reapply everything you learned yesterday, to the next day. Or you could be a box of rocks, insist you read something on Ala that made you cooler than everyone else, cause your friend told ya about "this thing", or "the best way to do somethin", or whatever other immature response you could spout out.

If you are the 1st type, please, hang in there, the noobs will never go away, but being a smart "Newbie"(Note the spelling, there's a distinct difference between the two, the latter meaning "New player"), you will far surpass the idiots and find yourself enjoying the game. And don't let the 2nd type wear ya down. They are ever present, there's not much we can do about it, and some even have more than one job to 75, which boggles my freakin mind.

I can only reassure you that it will get better, just hang in there, and keep a "Hit list". A log of all the tards that have messed ya up, screwed ya over, or generally made your game time that much less enjoyable. Then, simply avoid those people, at all costs, just /blisting someone doesn't do ya any good if your memory sucks, and besides, there's not enough /blacklist spaces available for the noobness out there.

And remember, having fun is the most important part of the game boss, you can have your <Moogle Pie> and eat it too. Don't let the ass-monkies take that from ya.

Lol, she's right. It was last night, and I and her Fiance were PLering that pty, but she was mostly tanking the whole time.

In response to MNKs being decent Tanks...
What can be done if the WHM gets aggro when we have no WAR or /WAR???
Because, MNKs can't 'Voke...

They can with WAR sub

I typically found myself tanking as all my melee jobs in the dunes. I am willing to, too cause I just want the hell out of there. Its possible for almost all melee to tank in the dunes, its just not as efficient as another "real" tank job.

As many have stated already pretty much any melee class with a /war can tank in Dunes. As a monk I have tanked pretty much everything there and the only exp creatures that I fear are Pugs "Screwdriver" /shudder and some Ghouls are just insane with there blood draining.

"He's almost dead"
*drains our blood*
"Crap he is almost at full health again." ><

A MNK/WAR makes an effective tank. And a decent WAR/MNK rules at those levels, as it's really easy to hold hate with Provoke and Boost. I'd prefer a WAR/MNK to a PLD/WAR at those levels.

But I think Wiegraf was referring to new players who haven't done the subjob quest yet. So yes, a MNK, not a MNK/WAR, would not be able to tank. Still, your DRK/WAR was probably fine, and your WHM was stuck thinking of post-30 conventions that don't work as well pre-30.

The best 15-20 party I was even in consisted of DRG/WAR, DRK/WAR, 2 THF/WARs, and 2 WHM/BLMs. The DRG and DRK voked initially, the THFs played "merry-go-round" with SA effectively, and the WHMs split cures and aggro. The result was lots of fast damage with little downtime, giving us some easy IT chain 5s.

Try to use Boost to get hate or a Weapon Skill.
Keep truckin'!

Shield Mastery don't kick in until the Jungles-ish, which is about when mnk starts to take too much damage. Prior to those levels, mnk = totally bitchin tank. I tanked as my mnk right up until we hit Goblin Smithy's, and my damage taken per hit was about equal to a pld (this was before Shield Mastery existed, otherwise I'd let them take over for mandies).

I'm 100% convinced mnk is the best tank until other jobs start wearing chainmail - that's when the def in equipment starts to really spread. That's also about when the skill differences start to become noticable as well; at lv25 mnk eva (B+) caps at 74 whereas nin (A-) caps at 78. Stays at a 4-skill difference until a bit past 30.
