Do you have to BE a summoner when questing for the summoning avatars?

I was talking to Gideon about this and I believe you do have to have completed the SMN quest and have the SMN Job available. When defeating an Avatar Prime, you have a choice to get items, gil, and of course the Whisper which will allow to summon the avatar. I doubt SE would create an alternative menu that only gave you the choice of gil and items when they could just limit this quest to only those who have the SMN job open. :? :wink:
 
But do you have to BE a summoner (as in, fight as a summoner) to do these quests - or just have it unlocked?

I think you have to be a SMN to get the whisper Jen, i think you can fight it without having SMN job but I dont think you can get the whisper drop without it.

I think you can do the avatar fights without having SMN unlocked but you can't get the avatar before you unlock it. That is if you went to fight Garuda and didn't have the SMN job opened, you could'nt get Garuda, just her knife, 10k or the other silly items she offers.

In the low level one on one fights I believe you do. In the high level fights I think you can go as any job you want.
 
If your talking about the Mini-Fork battles you have to go as your summoner...there is a level 20 cap and you need at least level 3 fame in all the cities.
 
To get the Mini fork, you have to be rank3 fame, and you need to have a level 16+ smn to accept it. I think you actually have to "Be" the smn to receive this quest.

The normal avatar fight you can accept the quest with any job. You need rank6 fame on the corresponding quests and they will give you the "Normal" fork. About the rewards, you will only have the gil option if you do not have the smn job unlocked. You have all the choice if you have the job unlocked.
 
Its really not true. You have to be lvl 20 summoner or higher for the mini-fork battles but the fame isnt lvl 3. I had and still have level 0 fame in norg and got leviathan and ive dragged other people to norg who have done no norg quests and get the building trust dialog from the norg fame checker who have also been able to get leviathan mini-fork. So norg mini-fork = 0 fame, lvl 20 or higher summoner set as main job, have to talk to the other one (not the taru) of the 2 orastery people on the dock in norg.
I'm from windy, so i had lvl 2 fame when i got ifrits mini-fork, and ramuh's which was in mhaura and shares windy fame. bastok and sandoria I had 0 fame in when I got shiva and titan. Garuda is rabao fame which is sandy fame and I had 0 fame in sandy when I got her. Anyway youre going to need fame at some point and it's really not a bad idea to start building up your fame whenever you can, but as far as the mini-fork battles go I really think its probably lvl 0 fame for all the mini-fork battles.

Prime battles (lvl 60+): have summoner unlocked, you can get the whispers with any job class. Take your 70+ rdm etc, get the whisper for your lvl 1 summoner job. This was the classic pre-minifork way of doing it and is the reason why you can sometimes see lvl 1 summoners with fenrir
