Well Now that i finished my second job to 75, Rng whm respectivly I was trying to figure out what to lvl next. I have started to solo with SMN and I am up to lvl 16. I was wondering is there a purpose to this job. Do others find it fun, i realized that after like lvl 22 ill be asked to main heal mostly but as long as I get to use the avatars that would be fine with me. Just curious peoples opinion on this job and whether it is worth it.

Well if you enjoy WHM, you'll love SMN. SMN in my opinion is kinda worthless at lower levels, but once you get up there, well you've seen SMNs. I personally always felt pretty cool summoning a huge beast to fight by side, but pissed as all hell when I'd get agrro and couldnt summon. My SMNs only 37 so I really cant comment on much.

Best Job Evar!

It's a good job, you're kinda like a bard/whm with the buffing (ecliptic howl/growl, earthen ward, hastega, etc) plus a huge mp pool for keeping everyone alive. I highly recommend trying to pair up with ninja tanks and a rdm as a back up as your debuffs kinda suck and it's handy to have a cure IV and a real haste. There's a lot of waiting so expect to make your own parties but there are lots of places you can solo/duo (bombs are great for this!). If you had any questions more specifically just fire em off and I'll see if myself or someone else can answer :)

It's definitely my <3 job

Oh and you do massive damage once you hit 75.

I have been looking into leveling SMN as well. It looks like a fun job, despite the main curing ^^;..

So quick question: for gear as far as stats go~ you go for a balance of int/mnd and some mp+ gear or minimal int/mnd and max mp+ gear? opinions on both setups would be appreciated.

I always went with MP+ gear, with a sprinkling of MND before I got my Light Staff. Post-Light staff, MP Gear.

SMN is the job you need if you want to do things fast. Ive soloed things that we are not supposed to solo and succeded. It also adds that support a group needs for tough battles (damage, heals, defenses and enhancements). As an example of things you can do with SMN:

- All ToAU Missions up to 22 (scratch Black Coffin, thats impossible to solo)
- Solo T/VT/IT mobs for xp anytime you feel like
- Solo Avatars BC for up to 50k daily (Its 60k, but dont waste time with Leviathan he spams Spring Water and the time runs out...)
- Replace the WHM at the office when he takes a vacation

That's just an short example of things to do with a SMN, I'm sure there are plenty more. Is it a fun job? Of course. What I like the most about it is that it challenges you to try harder things all the time.

I went all MP+ gear and what I couldn't fill with MP+ gear I went with MND gear, Int is useless. Your number 1 stat to try and get down though is your Bloodpact Timer.

Absolute snore-fest up to 37... But it looks like heaps of fun later on.

I've only played the job to 37, so I kind of consider my opinion to be worthless but thought i'd post it anyways.

Most people have told me "expect to main heal" but out of all those 37 levels, i've only had 1 party where i've been the main healer. I was lucky enough to have always been invited when there was a white mage, which made it a lot easier for me to use my avatars (and keep up with my summoning magic) because I was only backup healer.

The one party that I did main heal, I found it a bit more risky to use my avatars because often I would be resting back my MP until the last possible moment (lol elvaan mp -_-) and I would end up having to summon my avatar when the mob was at camp, and while you're summoning you have no way to toss out any cures. But hopefully you will have a good PLD that will cover the initial healing for hate, or a NIN that can at least keep up his first shadows so that it won't be too much of an issue.

As to whether i've enjoyed it? Na, can't really say that I have. I prefer a job where i'm doing a lot more than a couple of blood pacts and some healing. I would consider this to be one of the more boring jobs available. I also don't like being the lowest ranking DD when I do get the chance to do strictly offensive BPs, so if you're also one of those people that like to really be doing the damage, well... there's a reason why many SMNs have to solo a lot of their xp (at least all the ones i've known have had really hard times getting invites)

The only reason why i'm currently lvling SMN is because of the usefulness in events, and of course the damage @75. SMN is a good job for all CoP missions (especially the promies) and i've often heard of BCNMs being trioed with SMNs. So this would be where I say the job really shines.

The only other thing I can add is that SMN is one of those jobs that requires a LOT of help in obtaining the "good stuff" to do the job. The avatars can be difficult to gather a group together, and getting Fenrir and Diabolos are usually a challenge for most people. Not only that, but if you want to get things like Carbuncle Mitts and Evoker's Ring, again you'll need to put a lot of work and likely ask your friends for some help. Its one of those jobs that has a lot of quest work and unfortunately the majority of it isn't soloable, so thats something else to consider.

so normally you do preparation cost then switch to bloodpact down when ws? Is there any gear that enhances bloodpact power and does the elemental obi help any?

I never really bothered too much with avatar cost- as you really don't leave them out too long. I mean there's basics like having elemental staves that will add -cost (I went HQ with dark/light and eventually the rest). You usually just summon them, do whatever bloodpact you're doing and dismiss them right away. The only avatar I ever really bothered trying to get -cost down was carbuncle as he's the only one I really bother duoing with. I haven't seen a difference in power to the corresponding avatar by having elemental gear equipped, just the perp cost.

There are peices of gear that increase your acc/att but it's mostly AF/Relic stuff.

Question: Your bloodpack timers go down with your summoning skill ups?

Question: Your bloodpack timers go down with your summoning skill ups?

I think there is gear that affects this, not so much that thye naturally go down.. I could be wrong, but that was my understanding.

-Perp is more important the more you keep your avatars out for extended periods of time. If your only use of avatars is summon, BP, release (this will almost always be the case in exp at least), it's practically not worth bothering with -perp at all. However, for times when you *do* keep your avatars out some or all of the time (soloing, duoing, some events), -perp is very important. Prioritize getting -perp gear appropriately by whether or not you need it.

By the same token, BP recast reduction gear is much more important if you've got the spare MP (and the MP regeneration) to be firing off BPs consistently as soon as they're up. And it's much less important if you only occasionally have time or MP to whip out BPs (such as when main healing with few or no others to help with backline support).

Don't main cure and smn is a cool job at any lvl. I had all avatars and mitts at lvl1 so lvling at low lvls wasn't bad at all. Smn can do damage, but most want you believe they can't so that you main cure.

Neh, Isollde's right. Blood Pact is on a 60-second cooldown by default, and can be lowered by some gear (primarily JSE50 and the Relic set, but also YYR as well)

In terms of stats, MP is obviously important (though hMP equally so). MND is decent for getting cap on Cure II and improving Cure IIIs, but the rest of the stats are virtually useless to the job; HP could be raised a bit to help prevent something like a stray AOE or dropped bomb from 1-shotting you, but isn't really important beyond that - I'd just recommend not wearing too much stuff that makes your HP dangerously low. -Enmity would also be semi-important since if you're main healing, the last thing you want to do is pull hate (again with the whole potentially-getting-1-shot).

-Perpetuation Cost is decent but a bit overrated - as Sabs said, you usually just toss out an avatar, BP then release, so you won't need to worry about it all that much since you'll typically only save ~10 or so mp. It adds up if you plan to leave your avatar out for a long time, i.e. when soloing, but then you typically use Carbuncle for that, whom will cost 0-1mp most your career if you have Carbuncle Mitts.

-Blood Pact timer gear has diminishing returns and is also somewhat overrated. While I'm sure many SMNs would disagree with me, I don't find having an enormous stack of -BP timer gear to have any practical use as you're generally are forced to rest a certain amount of tics to get the MP you spent from a Blood Pact back; if your timer is cooled off and you still haven't gotten the MP back from a L70 BP, for example, you either rest some more (thus making the -BP timer useless) or get up, resummon/BP (which at this rate will deplete your MP pool entirely). The only real time maxing out -BP gear is really beneficial is
-You have your avatar out constantly for L70BP spam, but that generally only happens if you're SMNburning something.
-You're using low-cost support buffs (but if you're in the Relic equipment range, the likelihood you use a wide variety of buffs is low, sticking you typically with Ward/Growl/Howl/[Hastega, huge maybe] for melee or Ward/Growl/DreamShroud for mages.)

Not saying -BP cost is bad or such, but getting past -10 or so usually leaves you with some MP not yet recovered. And in some cases it's just plain dumb. (Shame on SMNs who melee BP in YYR for the -5BP cost when SMN Doublet has 3% critical and -3BP cost.)

damnit all the good smn's beat me here and basicly said what i was gonna say.

i've lost the chance to look kewl.

i dont know what low lvl parties do now adays but in the past main healing was always expected. 2 things you need to learn to love. nin tanks and regen. yes you will only have access to regen 1 but it helps reguardless. unless the pld was really good i was always a WHM in parties with pld tanks. nin tanks i loved to death cause their shadows gave me the time i needed to buff the party and not worry bout him getting his/her ass handed to them.

you're luckier then we were cause back then the BP's werent seperate in rage and ward catagories. so that means MP management comes into play these days.

Just to add to what Zalt said, Nins have the mad love for Earthen Ward and Fenny's acc/eva boost!

In my opinion the fun begings at 65 with Eclipse Bite, but the REAL fun is at 70.

Plus what all the fellow SMN said.
