Was on Gamefaqs today and a SMN was asking about how to make his avatars easier to see because he says it's a problem that he can't see them most of the time.

So I got to wondering, is it a big deal to you guys that av's are harder to see than pretty much everything else?

Well, for me personally, and I'm not a SMN, but I see others with their avs out and it's like they're all faded and only half there.

But then again sometimes I can see all of them. My graphics card is fine. Guess it depends on settings as well.

This happened to me, too before I upgraded my graphics card driver.

Used to look like this:

Happened to me aswell when I used to have my nVidia Geforce 5500 256MB card, the graphics were like that in the screenshot. Even upgrading or rolling back drivers didnt make any difference. Eventually I replaced this card with a Geforce 6600 GT 128MB and it displays avatars clearly now.

{Hmmm..}

Its a bug with geforce fx series of cards. They just have a lots of problems in general. I always get that when I use my fx 5600 ultra card regardless of the drivers.

Aren't the FX series the ones with some kind of graphical effect built in that makes FFXI fairly unique in that it's one of the only games that acutally uses it? I seem to remember something about that from a long while ago when shopping around for a new video card to play this game.

For the record, I went with a Radeon-series because one visual effect wasn't going to make or break the experience and I'd had more experience with ATI's products.
