Looking for people's thoughts on this. I found that while it provided a good deal of closure, they could have done much better. Not only that, but the whole

Spoiler:
we were always dead thing doesn't work for me, at least not in this alternate universe, since it is supposed to have been created by there not being an island to crash in to, thereby negating them dieing in the plane crash.

Anyway ... thoughts?

Me and some friends saw this "already dead" ending coming a mile away. While it was good, we arent surprised one bit.

Well they didn't die on the plane crash..there time on the island was real watch the scene with Jack and his dad..it was a great ending I think

moved to multimedia items and i added a "spoilers inside" addendum to the thread title. i also ask that people be mindful that it's (however unlikely) possible that there are people who have not seen the finale.

also, lol@lost and the years-long-con.

NO NO NO!

It was not a years long con! Do not fall into that trap.

Spoiler:

CS told jack at the end that the 'sideways' world was created by the group so that they could find each other, and that the time they spent together was the most significant time of their lives (I somehow doubt that he was simply refering to a flight from Sidney to LAX). If they all died at the begining, then there is no Ben, no Juliet, no Desmond and Penny, etc, in the church at the end. Also, the 'significant' part explains why people like miles, lapidus, daniel, etc were not there in the end, since that time was not as significant for them. Hell, they probably weren't even 'real' in the sideways world and were just part of the background.

No, my take is that what happened on the island was 'real' and when they finally were all dead (could have take a few centuries for hugo to die), they met in the reality that they had created (Time had no meaning there).

Thanks Alanon, reading that actually helps it make more sense to me. I was considering that possibility but didn't want to write a novel b/c the Jimmy Kimmel thing was on in like 5 mins when I wrote that and I was hoping it would be worth it. As it turns out it was 30mins of commercials, 10 mins of Jimmy talking, 10 mins of actors from lost answering obvious questions, and 10 mins of joke finales I could have done without D:

Yeah, it had been discussed long before the finale so I wasn't surprised, I just was expecting some thing else. Something a bit less expected by the fan base (from what I can tell) that they COULD have done even in just the finale, but w/e. After reading what Alanon said I understand it a little better so I'm not feeling the lack of (quality / meaningful) closure that I was last night.

I was satisfied with it. I'd originally stopped watching shortly into the second season when it seemed like they were just spinning their wheels, but I recently got caught up via Netflix so I could go into the finale with full knowledge. It was nicely done.

Spoiler:
The atheist in me could've done without the "we're all in heaven" aspect of the end, but since that stuff was happening before Jack actually died, you could just as easily call it one of those "Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" deals where it was just his mind manufacturing something before the final snap of the rope. Either way, I enjoyed it a lot.

I wasn't too happy with it, mainly because the only character I have any sympathy for is MiB. His whole character was a tragedy. His mother and Jacob twisted him into what he was. Made up their own rules and made him a prisoner against his will. They forced his hand into everything he did. I wanted so badly for him to escape the island, he just wanted to go home. You know how star wars is The Tragedy of Darth Vader? Well to me, Lost is The Tragedy of the Man in Black. He was totally right, as far as any of the others know, it really was all for nothing.

The lives of the Man in Black, as well as Jacob's, were just metaphors for how life really is; life is very unfair and often times we placed in circumstances in which we had no say in the matter. However, Jacob chose to respond in a positive manner, MiB in a negative. Evil is a choice, not some external force exerting its will upon us.

Lost was on last night? You think it would've been more advertised.

*runs*

I hardly think Jacob was responding in a positive manner. Forcing his will on another, denying them their right to freedom? Thrusting people into circumstances to further is own agenda? Jacob was the biggest prick on that entire Island.

You're not the only one who thinks so. A few people I know were having trouble telling which of the two was good / evil.

His "agenda" was far more important than anything in any individual's life. Ultimately though, he gave Jack a choice, a choice which he himself never had, at least not to the degree that his successors had. The whole drinking from the cup was just a symbolic act of that choice.

I really, really don't get the impression that if they let the man in black leave the world would end. They were cruel.

Great show.. I will miss the excitement that builds as a Tuesday rolls around. The ending was great. Closure on the characters and my gosh incredible acting in the finale. Everyone wanted to leave a huge last impression for their careers i guess.

I thought most of season 6 with a few exceptional performances from Sawyer, Ben, and Desmond was mostly crap and filler but I did really enjoy the finale and the way they did it. Matthew Fox did a great job.

My only regret is they didn't bring back Mr. Eko one last time to beat some more Others or maybe even Locke with his Jesus stick.

Especially since I heard he wanted to come back for the finale. I guess the writers were still pissed that he left the show.

They offered Mr Echo a part in the finale. He turned it down and asked for 5x the amount lol... Sick man.

I agree with you about Matthew Fox. This is a dude that for most of the show i didnt like so much and still in the finale i was borderline cheerleading for the dude. He did an incredible job man and stole the show. I need to give some credit to Jorge Garcia who i hated for a long time also...
Spoiler:
He was great in the scene when Jack gives him the lead.
Terry O'Quinn, Henry Cusick and Michael Emerson need no praise as they have been incredible actors since the first appearance on Lost. Just an incredible cast and an incredible job.

Is it possible that the MiB wasn't actually Jacob's brother, but just an evil entity? We saw Jacob kill his brother and we know he was buried in the cave. This entity has taken quite a few forms of the deceased, is it possible that Jacob's brother was just the first?

I figured Their mother was a combo of both Jacob and MIB. She was interested in the darker side of MIB as a child as even Jacob said she loved MIB more. Then she tells Jacob he was always ment to be the guardian. When she confronts MIB as an adult she tells him she did something so he can never leave, ever... Then she totaly destroys his village, kills all people there and some other things no woman/man/human could do... The after math reminded me ALOT of the temple after smoke ran through. I figured from then on she was the smoke monster and guardian at once. She gave the smoke power to MIB so he could never leave and gave Jacob the guardian power(If there even is one, i guess it could be how Jacob travels?). I think the near death/death experience MIB had from Jacobs tossing him was the catalyst of letting the power out. Its a great thing about the show, alot of things have no absolute answer.

I think that's just bad writing on their part. Is it really THAT hard to have a script make sense?

And the whole MiB versus Jacob thing was kind of twisted. I honestly kind of have nothing but sympathy for MiB. First some psycho lady murders his mother. Then lies to him and tells him the island is "all there is". Then just when he finds out the lying bitch is full of shit and figures out how to leave the bitch kills everybody off and makes his brother hold him hostage on the island forever.

Fuck after 2000 years I'd be trying to kill his ass and his little candidate buddies too to get the fuck off that god forsaken place.

Jacob and his fake mom totally came off as the evil douchbags to me.
