Last night I am leveling/farming with my MNK/WAR just outside the Outer Horutoto Ruins. This has become a spot I prefer to visit between levels 4-8 or so. Anyway, sometimes people are there doing the same thing and sometimes I am the only one. It's up to the other person if they want to stay when I show up. And it's up to me to decide if it's worth it for me to stick around as well.

Generally, if I show up second, I will stay if the XP is still steady enough. If I am first I'll stay out of principle, unless the other person just doesn't leave AND XP sucks. So anyway, I was actually inside the dungeon at level 6-7. I get 7 and come up.

Now I am walking around the immediate outside area again. I see someone there named Meris, and I saw her about an hour earlier as well...So I figure she's doing some leveling/farming like me too. OK, no biggie.
Now it starts to get a little funny...
I go from killing a crow and spotting a crawler and running towards it.
As I begin running towards it, I see this same person, Meris, running towards it. Only she's not coming from the side, or from the opposite direction. She is a couple steps behind me. Since I was in 3rd person view I can see her just a couple strides back frantically trying to take the crawler. Well, we are both there for the same reason.
I spotted the crawler first. I started running towards it first. I drew my weapon first. Thus, I struck first and killed the crawler.

Meris is an Elvann THF, and she proceeds to just stand over me as I am killing this crawler. Soon as I was done with that, I leave and head for Windy. Basically I came out of the dungeon, killed 2 things (fair and square) and left. So after the race to the crawler, I wondered if she was thinking anything.

Nearing the gates to Windy, I finally get a /tell from her. It says, "Don't do that."
I say: Don't do what?
She says: KS
I say: KS?
She says: Kill Steal?!

...I figured as much...Rotten little whiner...

I say: (ticked at this point that someone is making a big deal over something they aren't even right about) I was in front of you.
She says: I was in front of you.

Now that I can see she just wants to make a stink over one kill and be annoying, I get pissed. I go on to tell her that I was definitely first, to which she tries to blame "latancy" as an issue. Hmmm...Latancy?!?! Right...I show up on screen just fine to everyone else, even when I am competing for the same farming area.
So easing up a bit, I just say, "It's possible, I suppose."
She goes on to lecture me about courtesy, of which I have always been since I have been playing FFXI.
I am courteous. I am also a complete dickhead.

Here's how to get to a pleasant, courteous response from me...
Remember the golden rule? Use it.
Don't try telling me what to do.
Don't try telling me I am wrong, when I am obviously right.
If it really is a point of debate, I understand having a debate.

Etc. etc. blah blah blah, yada....

After trying to play it down a couple times, it just goes on like this for a while, and I just end up telling her to get over it. She kept putting in two more cents, so I finally say that I will come back with a friend and really steal her kills. And I laugh at her.

So I'm in my mog, changing into a different set of sexy Mithra wear, and meeting my friend when I see a couple MISTELLS coming from her to me.
D'oh!
What and idiot.
She's apparently telling another person about me...Quoting what I said to her and saying how I'm so immature, etc.

So I write back to her telling her that she probably didn't intend for me to see this. Gave her one more little burn for the road and that was it.

LESSON: Don't bother people over stupid, insignificant crap.

I took one kill that she wanted in that area...I did not steal it. Even if she had gotten there before me and intended to kill the crawler, and I killed it first, it still wouldn't be a kill steal...Although I agree, now you get into a morality and courteous type debate. Technically, it still wouldn't be stealing. RED = MINE. PURPLE = YOURS.

However, I was ahead of her every step of the way and she tried bitching at me. Bad move, princess.

GET OVER YOURSELF!

Oy i know what you mean. Farming can be such a touchy issue - but when your actually getting XP for it - whoever strikes it first gets it! If I'm farming and I'm way to high for the level of the monsters and a low level character is in the same area I make sure they didn't want the kill first and if they did I let them have it. But if it's another high level character it's a race as far as I'm concerned.

It was your kill fair and square and she had no right to get pissy about it. The only time I've gotten pissed about it was I was outside Windhurst once leveling my theif...(i think I was like level 5) and I spotted a crawler. I pulled out my dagger and started running towards it. There happened to be a little whm in the area also, but he was resting. Just as I was about to strike the crawler he cast Dia on it. Now that's not cool...but if you both pull out your dagger/sword/club at the same time it's a matter of who strikes first. Tell her to grow up and wait for it to spawn again.

PS: I had to laugh at the whm because I guess in the mad rush to take my mob he neglected to check how hard the cralwer was and got killed...

LOL.
That's funny about the WHM.

Yeah I just don't get what she was trying to justify to me...
Especially trying to tell me I am wrong and hw to act.

Get bent!

The only real time I ever gotten pissed was when I was a Thief helping my friend get rank 3 and fighting the Windurst Dragon. We went to Sandoria and then towards Ghelbsha Outpost and went to kill Warchief Vagit (sp?) My friend had to go AFK for a bit and was just sitting there, so I decided let me kill some orcs and make a little gil. I start killing orcs, when I get a tell from someone saying "OMG you punk, your level 31, why you fighing these orcs, go level or something." I told him I was helping a friend and was about to leave once they came back, I get another response "Dude, don't fight anymore orcs, they're not your level, WTF you want to kill them, the gil sucks." "Go farm somewhere else, I was here first".

That prick got me so pissed I decided to make it into a contest, using my chakram and Provoke to kill just about any orc in the area that spawned as fast as I could. Once my friend came back we left and I had leveled throwing like 4 levels

I am from EQ, and in EQ races were very common, races for raid targets, or named mobs, or whatever. Unlike FFXI in EQ the group (or party) who does the most damage wins the loot rights. Because that generally sucks, they implemented a verbal "play nice policy" which states first engage gets the kill.

I am glad that this is a fixed issue in FFXI, whoever engages first gets the kill, end of story, suck it up or quit the game.

I have like zero tolerance for whining and bitching about KS, unless one chooses to be cooperative and PT this game is a competitive one, and I really get ticked if people don't understand that.

Have lag or latency or whatever you want to call it? Well, you are just shit outta luck.

I have experienced this an aweful lot. Mostly when trying to lvl up from 1-7/8 in West Ronfaure. It was really tough back when i was trying to lvl Warrior and Monk since they are pure melee and you have to do the whole chase after the mob till it stops moving thing. Then when your just about to get it, someone with spells takes it away. Now.. once in a while I don't mind this happening, but when it comes to the point where you cant actually kill anything because there are several mage types doing this it down right pisses me off. Thankfully i got through those lvls and I dont have to worry about that anymore now that Im a Drk.

Now when I was lvling Drk 1-8ish things were a good deal better, since now if I needed to, i could just cast poison and draw the mob to me, unfortunately at those lvls you have to be sparing with your mp as an Elvaan. But it still helped out quite a bit.

Now.. There is also another side to this. Now that Im in the lvl 30 range with Drk I have to farm stuff to really get my money flowing again. I used to often frequent Sarutabaruta(sp?). I would roam both areas and sometimes steakout a spot where I new a bunch of crawlers usually spawned. Now.. im sorry if there were people sometimes about to fight a crawler and I casted poison before they reached it and took it. But I did the same thing as a warrior with provoke. Some people got pissy and sent me ranting tells, some i explained i needed the silk for money while others i just simply laughed at and told them to get over it. Depends on what they said to me. But the point is, you cant get angry if you couldnt get the mob first, there are other mobs out there to kill. Just turn around and look for something else. No need to get worked up unless it's really interfering with your gameplay. Which I dont perposly do to others.

This is exactly what I am talking about. Fair is fair. I would never deliberately keep following someone around and "stealing" their kills.
If we are in the same area both farming and leveling, then I think there are plenty of MOBs to go around. If not and we end up going after the same one, even a few times, may the best man get the MOB.
Moaning like a sore "fill in the blank" over it happening just once, esp. when it was clear that I was a few paces out in front every step of the way, precipatates me telling off the whiner. Sorry whiner, but this one is not about me not being courteous or not being mature. Don't try playing smart to justify your shitty actions.
Piss off eh?

Hmm i cant tell if you are rude or right. Now for the most part i agree wholeheartedly. Sabia said it right and i agree, but Sabia is awesome!! LOL. But i mean there IS a point when its a little rude. If someone has a weapon out and are running to kill the thing, snatching it cause you can is messed up. Its happened to me and then people do the "Oh i didnt see you". BS. But ive grown accustomed to it. Another thing, High levels stealing the trains of others. OMG wtf. Ok so im killing sheep where Mary spawns trying to get my craft up a bit, and i train about four sheep. Then this straight up ass comes and kills my sheep one by one. He says "thks" and leaves. I was like wow what an ass. So a while later im training again and he here comes...I quickly try and get cyclone off to finish the rest but i kill a sheep and then am not facing etc etc...So he killed them again. "Thks" and leaves. So i snatched from him every chance i got. Sadly he got mary. I wished i could have to rub it in his face. If you know him, Dadadidi, tell him from me hes a prick!! :D

Now NM, sorry but you are out of luck. I love walking up to spook and getting the "OMG another high level coming to take over a camping spot" Lol im 45, not really high level. I am good on the voke, and will get spook 9/10 times, cause i learned how to. I actually told people while i camped it today. Of the 10 campers or so, 2 seemed to appreciate it, the others got pissed. Well i went 1/2, only missed second cause voked stupid bones. But i hate that thing 2/18 now. But back to topic. NM, expecting someone to just GIVE you a NM is ludicrous. I try and not camp when someone is camping. Golden Bat, in between VE spawns, if someone is there i leave. But when people fume at you cause you got the emperor before them, or cause it killed them, too bad. Perhaps you should get flee too. One thing i cant stand though. When people watch you die. I mean come on, thats a little ridiculous. I had it happen ONCE. I got emperor at 200 hp just yesterday. I engaged, knew i shouldnt cause i had no chance, but i did. I died while a low-level party who could not have taken him anyways watched. I was like wtf, you couldnt have thrown a cure my way. I know you shouldnt fight NM if you cant take them...but cheering the Mob on is mean. Im a thf and so cantheal anyone, but if they want help, all they have to do is ask and ill try and save them. Anyways, im tired...im out

I'm right.

Based on what you are saying, it doesn't seem like you understood that I had my weapon drawn first. It sounds like since that was the case I am still ok in your book. Hehehe.

Whatever anyway. That Meris pissed me off and it's the only person who has done so since I have been playing. I am always very couteous. But she will not get that treatment from me. Whining little brat.

People crack me up. At each level, there are hundreds of critters that can offer you some EXP in any given zone (Okay, maybe exaggerated, but there are PLENTY), especially the starter and mid zones. If someone's going to get their panties in a wad over a kill of theirs getting taken (Red its mine and purple if its not is a wonderful rule and way of thinking, so I don't really see how you can "take" something) doesn't make sense to me. While that person "stole" your kill, you keep running looking for a fresh batch of enemies to dispatch before your competitor gets there. In most situations, people only want to look at the bad to get people to feel bad for them (such as Sneakypants' "rival" in her original post), and not get the positive out of it. The positive is that the other player COULD have kept roaming the area for spawns, gotten maybe 1-2 more kills while Sneakypants maybe would've been looking for more. Apprently one un-named mob is enough to turn people's lives upside down and make them want to bring the pain! Hell, just last night I was in an awful PT... SAM without Body armor (GASP, level 45), RDM with a 15 brd subbed ending each fight with 350+ mp... got 800 exp in an hour. The good part? I now know to never party with those 2 players again (after requests made the RDM listened but eventually went back to what he was doing and the SAM was just being a jerk.. lol he also had his mentor sign up, for those that get that joke of mine)! Sneakypants, you did what you could to resolve the situation. For that, you can be proud. (b'.')b

Oh, and it doesn't make a damn difference who draws their weapon first. Red, mine, purple, yours. lol I still find it funny, Sneakypants, that the other person was arguing about latency over a crawler kill! Last time I heard someone blame lag for getting smoked was in a FPS named Quake, and I think this game is a lot less reflex-intensive, which is very nice for a change. :)

HEY, im a 43 red mage with a 16 bard subjob and i end each fight with under 100 mp and my max mp is 333 (yes, i am 1/2 evil :P) well, unless i use convert :P. the only time i break 350 is pie + convert.

 Mithy you weren't the RDM in question. I'm sure you do your job just fine considering how much people like you, and if Faedryth is cool with you, so am I! I was simply stating this guy's fights were pretty much going "Casting Dia II" "Casting en-spell" "Full attack > <t>". A refresh every now and then, and again he wasn't even using his songs but like every other fight. :/ The BRD sub is a wonderful idea, but if that player doesn't utilize it, it's wasted space.

if it aint claimed its fair game, the only way this game rolls. Piss and moan all you want if i got it first, welcome to my /blist

Word!

I say: (ticked at this point that someone is making a big deal over something they aren't even right about) I was in front of you.
She says: I was in front of you.

I actually think you're the one that over reacted. I may be the only player that actually realizes this simply because I have a roommate that plays as well and we are often running around together, but you are nowhere near where you think you are on their client and vice versa. Truth is I can run right next to my roommate on my client and be several steps behind him on his screen. Along these lines it's very easy to understand why someone might feel that they were closer.

On a second note as someone who has obviously played longer you should've taken the high road and been a little more polite to someone who is just starting out. I've seen Meris around Windurst and she's very young. No subjob yet. Give her a little bit of a break. A simple "Sorry, must've been lag... didn't see you" or something would've gone a long way to make your conversation a lot less edgy.

Still think I over reacted since she said what she did?
Interesting.

It wasn't the scenario exactly, and not even so much what she said, but how she said it.
She's young...That's great. I am still young, but I don't tell people what to do and how to act.
Bottom line she made a stink over 1 kill, and she can kiss my ass...

Then she sends mistells bitching about me...And I over reacted for telling her to deal with it?!?!?

I think I did take the highroad.
I could have kept it short and sweet, and if you read my post, I started out that way. I didn't jump all over her for sending me a /tell.

I've had an issue with only her....Hmmmm.
Yeah.

I have a comment. I was in the mines doing the kazam key quest, and had a camp. Then this guy Fatalist shows up. I told him that i had been there for a couple of hours, not roaming, waiting for Mob to spawn. I asked him to leave, but he didnt. As soon as mob spawned he voked it and got the key I was waiting for. Now I understand that whoever gets it first its theirs, but when i asked him nicely not to stay there he should have gone. There were other areas he could have gone to.

Yeah this is definitely not cool.
And I doubt somehow that it was merely coincidence...
