Just wondering if anyone is from FL or has ever lived there. I am thinking of moving down to Orlando in a year to persue my true calling of a major *_* and well... I have no idea what kind of place it is. I have started my own research and am very excited but also very intimidated. I mean, is it expensive to live there? What are the cities like? What would a north eastern chicka like myself need to know when moving to a much larger and move lively state? ( not much action in good old Delaware ) I also have to admit I don't really much care for big big busy cities, I'm a girl from a quiet not so busy town. Just wondering if anyone wanted to share any of the knowledge :)

It's shitty. End of story.

Wages are low. Cost of living is high.

It's the price you pay for living in "paradise".

I'm in your general area... Maryland / Delaware.

Higher wages, cost of living is lower. Much better.

I've been living in Florida for 11 years.

Cost of living is very high here compared to wages.

By the way - move to orlando to pursue a special major? Would you perchance be referring to Full Sail?

I like the Delaware region. I'm in NY and it's not that far away. It's really nice there. Why go near old people? lol

Kentucky... second cheapest state to live in ftw....
Kentucky... redneck bumpkins and bible-thumpers ftl....

Big price to pay for a cheap life.....

Florida is the USA's wang.
California is everything Florida wishes it was.
People come to California to go to school because it's the best.

California > Florida:biggrin:

The one thing I'm starting to get sick of (I'm 20) is all the goddamn liberals who out voice the conservatives. Liberals get away with anyhting in california, so if your republican (like me) it's best to just keep your views to yourself.

Agreed... FL sucks balls. I've lived here for about 7 years and I really want to go back to WA. *sigh* Wish me luck on saving up the money to do that... but, if could somehow win the lotto.... 82 mil will do the trick nicely.

Not to join in on this bash florida topic but... ya... Orlando is probably only good for three things: Disney World; Virgin Megastore; and Medieval times. Night life is not too bad but most people prefer to commute to Tampa's Ybor City for that.

Transportation: Awful. Like most of florida, public transportation does not exisit or it is poorly ran. Some of the worst drivers I have seen in the US. Not to mention most people live in Orlando and commute to Tampa everyday (had a lot of friends say the housing is cheaper in the Ocala/Orlando area than in Tampa the better paying jobs are supposedly in Tampa). It is one of the biggest traveling annoyances and not friendly on gas milege. I-275 to I-4 is considered one of the worst interestate turn offs in florida and always has accidents from a long rush hour jam. Oh! And everyone flocks to this area during the winter season so there are plenty of people from fun states and Canada who are not familar with the roads.

Housing: Probably cheaper than the housing shortage fisaco going on in the Northwest and Gulf Coast areas. But housing all around has risen in prices. Cheaper living does not always mean the safest and insurance friendly areas. There will always be a consideration for purchasing both flood and wind insurance because of the risk of hurricanes, torrential rain, and all the fun tropical weather that exisits in florida.

Weather: hot just about all year round. Humidity might be killer from about late March to Early October. The winters are wet, so despite what the thermometer says, add the wind chill and it can feel pretty cold. October-November are usually the months where the weather seems to fall under perfect.

Many orange groves and produce around the area so it is a great place for grocery shopping. Continous fresh produce throughout the year and fresh strawberries from Plant City should be in soon. Farmer's markets are plentiful and usually have great deals than the big supermarkets.

Wages: Lower than most other areas. So many teachers come to florida for school and then leave for other states after graduating because of better pay. Although compared to the (pre hurricane mess) northwest areas, the price of things are a little more expensive. It is evident to tell the difference between the afluent areas and the economically depressed areas. Most people who are older do come to florida because of all the legislation (which might change soon) aimed towards them and they have good enough retirement funds to live away from snow.

I had my fun two years living central florida area and ya, was not that impressed with the standard of living or how the people acted there. Still have a few friends and a brother there who cannot wait to graduate and leave. Not too sure how the job market availbility is today (<_< I moved away from Florida lol) but it is probably going to be just as competitive if not even more so because of the tourism factor.

So... other parts... Let me be brief....

Tallahassee- state capital... only hills and government buildings... not that entertaining unless FSU and TCC stuff is that exciting. I-10 is where the cops like to find people to pull over... tons of fun! Always under construction.

Northwest Florida- Just avoid unless marrying someone in the Navy/Military services. Southern food mmm... Somewhat tend to stick to cliques and familar social groups. Northerners are for condo money RAWR. And... insert hurricane rebuilding on a smaller scale to New Orleans. Although before the condos take over all the beaches, they have some of the most gorgeous white sands in the world. About as entertaining as Delaware.

Gainesville, unless attending UF and things to do with UF, there is not much to see. Typical college town.

Miami and the Keys- Never been there so not much to say. People did talk about going to South Beach as a spring break trip all the time. Rumored to have really good Key Lime Pie.

wow, thanks for the informative overveiw Ranpha, thanks for breaking it all down for me. Tonight at work, I talked to my friend's girlfriend who graduated from Full Sail, needless to say I got really excited... one of the guys who teaches there (get ready for nerdyness...) invented D&D! It would be like being taught by a celebrity x.x;

He pretty much hit it out the park. miami I hear is nice though lot of my friends go down there when they get 3day weekend because it pretty dull up here in jacksonville. orlando is the lightning capital of the world, so hope you have surge protectors. It can get pretty nippy in the winter but it has not snowed here since 1991. Transportasion is horrible. There are alot stuff to do in orlando and is a pretty nice city.

Throw sand in your bed and add more, way more, crime in your state to get a taste of Orlando or Miami... I'd really doubt the D&D thing too. If someone had a hand at inventing D&D, they wouldn't be at Full Sail for anything.

Don't go to Full Sail, especially if it's for game design or recording arts.

I went there for 9 months. Supposedly they've fixed most of the things that were royally fucked up about the first dozen or so classes since I attended... but I wouldn't really count on it, especially since Bahin still teaches there. And their main office is utter crap, the only thing they handle properly is your money - that is to say, the money you give them to attend.

I could tell you so many things that would make you never look at that school again.

Trust me, not worth the money... but at least when you fail out, they refund any excess tuition for classes you prepaid but haven't attended yet.

Safer, much safer, to spend your money at a good university for whatever it is you want to do. At least then you wont be overlooked when applying for a job university students have also applied.

Personally, I will be living in Jacksonville in about a month. I've been apartment hunting since I arrived, but due to my deployment in late february, it's been delayed. So far however, I like the area of Jacksonville/Mayport. Traffic is not too bad, and it seems like a mellow town. Only thing I cannot seem to find yet, are things to do, off the base. There is one regencey square mall, but it's very small. Movie theatre... not sure where, mainly because I was only in Mayport for two weeks before my deployment. The base has a good bowling alley though >.>.

Maybe I like Florida solely because I have not lived in florida very long thus far. From the sounds of it, other people in this thread dislike it very much.

Florida is a nice place to live, really, it's just scorching hot, humid, and f'ing expensive, that's all.

Oh and 90% of the people on the road have no goddamn motherfucking clue how to drive.

Lol, that sounds like California.............. sorry hate this place.

Sadly, FFXI/MMOs are the only entertainment for those with little money.

Depending on what area and opinion on clubbing/nightlife, that can be either a waste of money or a weekly hangout. Places that were known for nightlife are relatviely cheaper for the not so upscale places (i.e. Ybor City had like 5-10 dollar cover fees, depending on the club). Never tried to go into anything with a line or that had limos outside of it. Just preferences and that twenty or more dollars could go towards something else.

Fans of baseball can go watch spring trainning games in various locations.

Bigger cities have althetic events as normal.

Pensacola has the Naval Air Museem which is free (lol). Other cities may have free exhibits and museems or ones that are not rated the same price as a theme park.

Beaches are public in florida and do not let any condo person tell you otherwise (well if too close to the condo property maybe... ). Although most places have tolls to pay when accessing the bridge to get to the beach. Those can range anywhere from fifty cents to three dollars. There are reserves, dunes, and national seashore parks that have fees. Some areas might even have strict limitations on what items can be brought to the beach. In Destin, we were told to get rid of the glass bottles.

Probably to get a better feel of the area, try looking at online newspapers to see the current events and upcomming festivals. Gaspirilla can be really crazy (everyone took like two weeks off of school when the Bucs won the superbowl and it happened to fall in the same time frame). That is the event where people dress up as Pirates and mock the invasion of Tampa Bay. Or an excuse to get plastered.

Dinning seems to score big as a means of entertainment. Although this hobby may fill your stomach and empty your wallet if done frequently. Each area near the ocean or gulf has a specialty in something. Shrimp, red snapper, mullet, alligator, etc. depending on the location.

Then there are the typical theme parks in various locations.

Now when money is present, finding the motivation to get out and do some of these things is another story... traffic wheee.
