Leeches- I'm sure you all know, or knew of someone, who's got one of these in their circle of friends, or their linkshell. The guys who want everything for themselves, and will beg, plead, swindle, or con anyone they can to get it. I had one on my back for a long time, and last night I finally had enough.
I've known this guy since early in the PS2 release, and helped him since he was a little newblet. I've had some problems with him in the past, but being a fairly laid-back person, and taking into account that he's still a kid (like 14 years old) I managed to keep my cool, and eventually make him see some sense, lol. He seemed to be shaping up OK- whereas when he first started he was begging left and right, he'd now actually started to put real value on that gil, and even told my husband "It's time I start farming for myself, I can't mooch like that anymore". (Or something to that extent).
So anyway, this guy had spent a few weeks pissing and moaning about getting SMN, his ultimate dream job. First it was hitting 30, then getting the ruby, then getting Fire element; whatever roadblock he hit, he would complain about, and beg for help in whatever way he could. (The Fire one was the funniest- I eventually had to tell him look- I may be knowledgeable, but that doesn't mean I can control the weather, lol). When he finally got SMN, I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking maybe now he'd settle down and just play already. Boy, was I wrong.
Now that he had his dream job, he wants Rank 5 for airship pass. He starts bugging me about killing the dragon for rank 3- I tell him I'll help if I can, but I'm busy a lot these days. (Moving in 1 week, husband has new job in another state, etc.)
So last night I log in, having a pre-arranged date to get rank 4 with 3 others from my linkshell. My little buddy sends me a tell, saying that he's now on mission 3-3. I respond "heh, I'm doing the same", and naturally he asks if he can tag along. I consult with the link briefly, they say it's OK (mind you they all knew him too, he'd actually been invited to the link a few weeks prior, so it's not like they didn't know what he was like) so he's invited to come along. "Oh, I still need to talk with the Sibyl" OK, fine, just get to Jeuno already.
We wait for an hour for my leeching friend to finally get to the Tower and join up with us. And when he does show up, it's as a lvl 29 BLM with NO EQUIPMENT. Actually, that's not entirely accurate- he had a freesword's staff, and a bronze moogle belt. That was IT. His excuse? "Well, I de-leveled getting SMN, and I don't want to play any job but that, but it's only at 13". Apparently he'd also sold all his BLM stuff, because "SMN is a different job, so I need diferent equipment" >.<
So we start making our way into the tower- we haven't even gotten halfway through the first floor when he gets aggro because he took off before invis was fully on. So what does he do? HE KEEPS RUNNING! Shouting "help" over /p. It took the whole group to put down the train he'd made, and even though they were all easy/weak for us, there were so many of them he'd rounded up that our lvl 58(!) WHM almost died. So, we all rest, WHM raises the now-dead naked Taru (warning him that next time he does that he'll be left dead), reraises himself, and we continue on.
A trip that should have taken us an hour, tops, to get up the tower took us three, all because of this naked Taru BLM. Then, at the end, he has the absolute balls to ask for us to help him do the Rank 5 missions too. Yes, because that's just what we want to do- hold your hand through everything.
I'm being a lot nicer than I should be, actually- last night was so bad, that the WHM (also our LS leader) even declared that if this Taru ever showed up on our link again he'd break the guy's pearl. I'm not going to name names, because deep down, I still have that glimmer of hope that maybe, someday, he'll realize what an ass he's been. However, I'm not willing to put myself through any more aggravation waiting for that time to come.
My advice to all you- if you have that "friend" or fellow link member that alwasy needs help with EVERYTHING, especially quests and missions, beware. They may end up riding your back all the way through Rank 5, AF, and everything they can, if you let them. It's one thing to be nice, but don't be so nice it turns you into a chump- once you get into that role, it's tough to get out again.
