So. . . What's the point then? (Probably emo warning.) -_-

Leave it to personal stress and just the slightest sign of tension in the LS to make me go completely insane, contemplate quitting the game, etc.

So, anyways, these were just the ramblings of a stressed out mind. I'm staying...blah blah...Wish Bonecraft were cheaper. . .Etc. . .

If you think about it like whats the point? Then whats the point in life? Think about it, you do stuff all your life, you work, you have a family, and then you snuff it. Thinking about the game this way doesnt do you any good, trust me ive been there a lot of times, play to have fun, and meet people, dont worry about it its worthless and fades away at the end of the day, play to have fun

well at one time when i had my own LS...i had a bunch of friends, or so i thought. Then one day they decide to leave the server....but i stayed.

Then one day i was contemplating quitting, when i met someone cool, and gave me a link pearl.

Now half the people in the new LS i consider friends. And when i find out people that i have talked to atleast quit, i feel sad.....

When people DO quit, they should atleast say goodbye to the ones they considered friends.

Simply put, if you prefer the charade of real life then stay. If you feel these people are your friends then thats up to you. Don't get all emo just cause of someone's observations. It's only what you make of it, right? Right.

And just for the record I stay because of the bonding, but where would that all be if I had quit and gone to WoW? Nowhere, thats what, cause I'm now bonding with people on WoW that I get accustomed to being with everyday and form friendships within that game. Simply put again, you can make friends anywhere you go. If you think someone really stands out enough, they may become closer friends, or something more. I consider some people closer friends than others, who I would actualy see myself keeping in touch with if I ever left. The rest are just acquaintances. Understand now?

In my opinion you're putting way too much thought into this. I encourage you to be grateful for the time we have to live, because all we can do is accept what we are and what our lives are. But let me share this quote with you, it has a good point.

"Why would you trade what you can't always keep for what you can always keep?"

Think about that and the meaning of the above quote. Here's my view of it down below

The things in life that we happen to value, we value them because they can't be replaced. A one of a kind item, a family member, an experience in a video game with our own unique friends of which events will never be repeated. If everyone could have what everyone else has in life, where would the special meaning be?

Life ends, your first car ends, your many many many video games end, relationships end. If you're thinking about the end and not living today, you're probably going to end up depressed about it, and it'll get worse like a big snowball.

Agreed, Jagster. You can't think of FFXI (or any other MMO, for that matter) as a game with a focus. There is no destination that you travel to, the destination is right in front of you.

These people you play with--do you see them as friends like you do a classmate or co-worker (assuming you're friends with one)--or are they just people you associate with online. Gun to your head, would you call them your friend?

Yes. Yes, I would. Not all of them, mind you, but there are several people I've met online that I would consider friends, without hesitation.

You ask, "Why are we doing all this?" I say, "To do it." That's all there is to know.

sometimes, people just make "friends" online, but sometimes its also a little more.

It all depends on the effort you make to have those kind of relationships that mean more. Just like in our real lives, we don't make great friendships unless we put effort and sacrifice into it.

There are 4 people (who come to mind in this situation) who I play this game with everyday that I would consider better friends then most people I work with, hang out with, whatever, because of the effort we make with each other to get closer. and 3 of them are moving along with me to live together (craziest idea ever, but we're young and need some adventure while we can XD ) We've known eachother since shortly after the NA release, and I will say that I love these people, and if I was in a "gun to the head" scenario, yeah they are my best friends.

Whats the point? Seriously?

You shouldn't really be asking us this but asking yourself this question. If you cannot find value out of anything that you do, then you prob need to re-evaluate how you are looking at things that you do in your life. There is always somethign good in anythign you do, the problem is only trying to see it.

How I see this game and what the point of it to me is....

I see this game for me and others as a good way to teach people how to work together. Because this is how real life is. Alot of people go into life thinking they can do everything, and be everything by themselves. I can tell you by personal expierence this is the HARD WAY. Doing things with others depending on others, and working toward a common goal is the easy, the fun, and the better way of doing things.

This game has alot more going for it like teaching people basic economics and such, but this is the most I get from this game.

That and its a time killer when I"m bored at home =P.

i made a RIP list in my bazzar comment of all the ppl that left. i knew them pretty well, and at least i will remember them, and hopefully they will remember me

I haven't read everything after the initial post but...An important fact of life...

It's not the destination that makes something worthwhile. It's the trip you took to get there. You can start a trek and have it end as nothingness, but is that really all that counts? Appreciate that road itself, not where it ends.

What about those people who make friends IRL or I have even heard of people getting married after meeting through this game. Personally, I have made a business arrangement where I will work with a friend I met through FFXI over the summer.

What is the point? Challenging yourself everyday. No different from any other game... You play to beat the game. In this you play to beat that monster, get more exp per hour, solo this monster, etc...

I get the "What's the point?" question all the time from family members. For me, it's the social interaction more then the game play.

If i had a choice between a party of people I dont like makin 5k+ an hour or a pt of friends ( and yes i condsider them friends) makin 3k an hour Im choosin my friend's party. Why? 'cause I can enjoy being around them getting a few laughs and not stressin to much about the low xp or other pt prossible pt problems.

If you take the game too seriously it loses it value as a deviation from life's little problems. It's meant to be enjoyed not stressed upon or too thought into.

You're a PLD, 5k an hour doesn't happen in PLD parties.

Oh it can happen. I was in a pt in Valley of Sorrow,
Pld, Rdm, Whm, and 3xRng
Chain 5 wasnt a challenge it was a gimme. Plus no real downtime do to Me healing myself and havin refresh and Rng's not gettin hit cause of Utsusemi.
So yes it IS possible just very very rare and hard to do.
the Rngs would go afk one at a time to cook or go to the bathroom in the middle of a battle and we still win with only me being in the yellow Hp range.
When you kill every thing in like an Min or less 5k and Hour isnt hard.

For me the whole point is Fun. The G in MMORPG. I play games because they're fun and entertain me. As soon as I stop finding this game fun, I'll be quitting. I'm not gonna pay money every month for something that bores/annoys me. Sure, i like the community, but im not gonna make a montly payment for something I use as a chat room. I have MSN I could use for that.

Beats watchin CSI! :D

Ooo moral dilemma. Am I more or less of a geek because I plan my FFXI time around watching NCIS and House on Tuesday nights?

On topic:

I've asked myself this question before. My initial answer to that question was to go beta WoW. After the novelty wore off, there was nothing there for me. It was just a long winded series of checkpoints for minimal personal gain.

(Side tangent: While we all bitch about the necessity of grouping in FFXI, I think we often miss the fact that it is forcing community, not mindless mountain climbing. This simple fact is FFXI greatest achievement, and single largest downfall.)

The friends I made in FFXI way back in the day when I was a level 12 Warrior getting lost in La Theine are the reason I grew to love this game so much. I never had as much fun in this game in anything as I did when me and 4 people who I would readily go out and have a beer with if they lived near me went out and did nothing more than pluck away at a level or two.

Sadly, all of these people whom I grew up with are gone, and I'm again in the transitional period where I'm desperately banking on the game to shine through to bridge me into a new home.

So what's the point? Friends. Simple, sappy, whatever. It's my reason and I'm stickin with it.
