With all the new threads going on, there is going to be a lot of cock-stroking, nit picks and general info being spewed around..

You are going to see a ton of info and opinions being tossed around. This can cause you to rethink the new job you were going to pick.

Please vote once, for the job you would consider to be the best choice for someone picking a new job.

You're opinions on jobs can range from gear options, dmg options, versatility, ease of play, whatever. Please do not post because "Omfg I r BrD and Th3y kick a55! I v0t3 brd"

So, pretend you are sitting down with your buddy, who just started and wants to play a job. Please post some comments to back up your choice if you feel so inclined.

(Probably a useless post, as I can smell the WAR's getting their mouse ready, but meh I'm bored)

** Had to group some jobs together, please vote and post your choice **

I think it would really depend on the person. I would ask that person what sort of things they like doing in other video games or RPGs (damage, support, tanking) and if they had decided if they were interested in one of the first main jobs, or additional jobs.

When I started, I knew that I wanted to play Paladin even before I bought the game. I always favoured the paladin class in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. So right away I would recommend Warrior or Monk to get the subjobs out of the way.

However if someone who had been playing for awhile asked me what their new job should be, I'd have to consider what they've played already. So therefore, don't ask me what new job you should play because I would tell you to level a job that does something you already enjoy, whether its magic use, dealing damage or whatever.

I'll give the advice that Stine gave me when I started out. Level Thief to 19, before you get your subjob.

This gives you a good, solid feel for a melee job, and allows you to make some good money while soloing and in your lower-level parties.

After you've unlocked your subjob, level Warrior or Monk as a second job, probably also to 19-20; you can sub Thief while soloing and even in parties.

For my tastes, if I were to level a mage job first, I picked Red Mage simply because it gives a great overview early-on of what both Black Mage and White Mage do.

I would start with something that will make a good subjob, like WAR if you are thinking you may want to tank or DD or WHM if you want to play any mage class. As you get game experience, you will learn first hand a little bit about what each job can do and figure out what you really want to do. Then, when you decide PLD or BRD is the way you want to go, you'll already have an important sub most of the way there.

I wish I had levelled all appropriate subs to 37 before I finished taking my first job to 75. Once you get into end game activities, it can be more difficult to make time to do things like level subjobs. (This is why my gimp ass still has no NIN sub.)

Me too. >.> I need to level my BLM SJ and I hardly have time for it. It's slowly getting closer though. lol

I recommended THF first to Tristam so you can get some extra gil while leveling but I kept dying when I leveled THF (leveled WHM first so I had it as a subjob). I'd suggest WAR, WHM, or RDM if you are wanting to unlock one of the advanced jobs. WHM or RDM would allow for free sneak/invisible for some of the quests. WAR would allow for being more durable while doing said quests if you got another form of sneak/invisible.

Of the 6 starter jobs Warrior is a solid choice. Of all the jobs Dancer is proving to be the best at freeing me up to solo some things. I really enjoy that job as a main and a sub.

I honestly would not recommend thief as their first job pre-sub. It's the slowest job to level because it has such low damage weapons, no active abilities or good DD traits pre-15 (SA). Those 14 levels are pure hell for most and I'd imagine it would give a worse outlook on the game to a new player trying to level quickly to catch up to the the majority of players. I'd say go MNK or WAR for melee and BLM or RDM for mage classes first. I'd recommend WHM, but I think people would do best by learning the system and partying a few times plus the added bonus of a subjob before becoming such a pivotal role.

As for a job that someone should chose starting out, it's hard to say. It's based on the person's preferences. For me, one day it would be NIN, another it could be WAR or BLM or even WHM. It's just a matter of what I feel like doing.

SMN is very fun just to mess around on. :3

I seriously must be the only person who found Thief exceptionally fun and educational when starting out, then.

In response to slowest-to-level, I forced myself to start forming parties, thereby learning party dynamics and finding out what worked best in particular (low-level) setups. A lot of those dynamics still hold true just as they did then.

I'm not discounting your opinion, Lavi, just saying that I found it much more rewarding in the long-run than a lot of people give it credit for.

Also, note: I didn't powerlevel Tristam. I kind of threw him out there. I was of the mindset that he needed to learn how to do things for himself before I did any powerleveling for him. I personally found thief a little hard even with WHM subjob but it was fun.

Also, for the decision for which job to take to 75, level it to 10. If still liking it, take it to 37. By then you should be able to decide if you like it enough to take it all of the way. Either way you have a subjob option.

I found it educational too.

I learned you can THF/WHM till 31 with a Sword and Shield, and people would still invite you.

Yes, I actually did that.

Not just you ^^

It was my first job, and I leveled it on PS2 and a 13" TV/VCR combo. It was the only job I played (besides sub jobs), with that setup, for close to 3 years. ROFL.

If there's any kind of bad outlook towards the game as a whole, it's closed mindedness, or generally the person's outlook. Not the fault of the game or class, etc. at all.

Thanks lol.

Genk, I did THF/WAR and THF/MNK with Sword all the way to 32, then swapped to Daggers once I unlocked /NIN.

My Thief still sits pretty at 34, as I leveled the bejeezus out of SAM as a subjob for DRK even pre-2hand update.

THF/MNK =/= THF/WHM lol.

THF taught me how to seek pt for hours on end too. I learned patience lol.
