Over 1000 posts in 2 days of a thread. I will admit that I used all 150000 characters allowed in a post on a thread but I wasn't the first to do so. Sculli since you have it locked down... I was thinking, and your rules are kinda vauge as to what is allowed and what isn't. On something like this would removing the ability to quote be less of a drain on the servers in this thread. Also can you disable sigs on this thread without messing any other part of the forum up? Another thing I was thinking of, do ROFLCHOPPERS and the like count as pics or is that something else? Just a couple of thoughts.

Why should Sculli have to change the vb design just because some people can't control themselves from breaking the board? Don't try to max the board's abilities and there won't be any problems.

On a side note, I thought someone had won when I saw the last post was hours ago and locked by sculli.

i think it should get awarded to the largest gap as of yet

42 minutes >.>

where's my ipod

QCDN shows only the first sig per page, so if a user posts multiple times on the same page, only the very first post shows a sig. Completely getting rid of sigs in the contest forum is possible but would require template modifications. The less I need to modify templates, the better, as modifications are usually lost during upgrades and will have to reapplied. Modifications sometimes interact with other modifications in bizarre ways to create a big mess, which is something I would rather like to avoid.

What exactly is "I wasn't the first to do so" supposed to imply? That it's ok? That it's less of an issue than when someone is the first? I honestly do not understand the reasoning behind it being acceptable to do something because obviously others have done it already. I hope I am not the only one who's asking himself "Is what I am about to do right?" before actually doing something. I will concede that what's right by one may be wrong by another, and that's cool, but it seems to me that often the question of whether something is the right thing to do isn't even considered.

The following is more of a reply to everyone, and not just Shaunessy.

What's the big deal, it's just an online message board, no one cares!
That's true, if one wants that to be true. A great number of people have already stated elsewhere that they are one type of person on the boards, a different type of person in game, and a different type yet in real life. I am not like that, so I have a hard time to relate.

In the end it comes down to this; I simply shouldn't have to make rules for every little detail that people could potentially screw up. I expect that those who participate in an online community, those who play a massivly multiplayer online game, have at least some rudimentary regard for the other users/players. Time and time again I am being disappointed as my already low expectations are not met.

What could possibly be the rationale for posting 150,000 identical characters? Was that supposed to be funny? Seriously, I am curious, and I am not just asking you Shaunessy, but everyone else as well. Was it a joke of sorts? Showing off the skill it takes to copy something 150,000 times and hit "Submit Reply"? Was it to piss others off? To make the thread a little less readable, to get a rise out of others?

Massive posts in the same thread lag the board, sure I could cut down on the amount of characters per post, and I may just have to do that to account for abuse. The reason why 150,000 is the limit is that some users have the potential of producing valuable content that is 150,000 characters long (i.e. Traveller's Tavern posts, some of the better FB posts, quest descriptions, etc.). Those tend to be isolated posts that push the limit without to bog things down. Of course people can argue that if I allow for 150,000 characters, then they have every right to post 150,000 characters. While that may be true, it still doesn't make it a good idea.

I try hard to make QCDN a place that is useful and entertaining to its users. When I log on and see people attempting to essentially sabotage my work, then I take that as a sign of disrespect. Disrespect toward me, and disrespect toward every other QCDN user.

Wow, what the Hell...Sculli goes above and beyond and offers contests and prizes, and people just bitch.

I wouldn't personally offer prizes, but then again I wouldn't be hosting ads for gil either...But I can respect that Sculli works hard at this. The last thing people should be doing is bitching at him for giving shit away and trying to create some fun.

I figured something like this would happen; the temptation factor was just too great. You used a reward to encourage people to repeatedly post to a thread with no specific point, only to be upset that the pointlessness got out of control. It would be like SE offering free XP to the character that could trade in the most NM drops, only to get upset that their GMs had extra work to do because several people used bots.

The idea of the contest itself was neat, but bored posters tend to get restless and test the limits. It may not be right, but it shouldn't be unexpected, either.

True, but when push comes to shove and a final answer is given, what's the point in debating it with Sculli or whining in a thread about it?

The admin, and creator of the contest wins, yeah?

There's a difference between a pointless post and just a spam post.

I made plenty of pointless posts in that topic, which really was no more than marking my place in the thread. That's to be expected. But you don't need to make super huge fucking posts in the thread, when all is required is a few words so the post is actually put in the thread.

As much as I would love to take credit for the contest idea, I just duplicated it from another board. There (sprintusers.com) they received over 12,000 replies ..., and guess what, not one of them was trying to see what 150,000 charaters in one post looks like. I took that as my benchmark, I didn't consider that mobile phone users are apparently a different crowd from MMO players.

I will reopen the contest at around 6pm Pacific today.

Heres a good rule: Dont be an asshat all the time.

It was a contest designed to be fun, with a prize for the winner. Not meant to be some jackass post-festival between you and Westyle posting pictures not permitted by QCDN and intentionally trying to break the board.

Dont be such a dickhead. Sculli puts alot of time into this so that YOU the user can come here and have a social gathering area outside of the game to discuss items/quests/whatever, and you ruin it for others when you decide to do something so fucking stupid.

I never posted any pictures on that thread. The people that I was refering to doing the long posts before me, were actually QCDN mods. When mods of a forum do something it makes what it is they are doing ok. I'm not bitching about anything, but some things I asked still weren't adressed. ROFLCHOPPERS and the sponge bob, would they be text?

I don't think the intent to break the boards was ever there, for me it was a goof on the whole concept of you post I post that no matter how you try to do it, it is what that contest is based on. Like climbing bats to see who is up first in a pick up game of baseball. I put my hand here you put yours above mine and I put mine above yours.....and on and on until someone reaches the top of the bat. Well this is a much bigger bat and eventually the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. Plus it takes no more or no less skill to use the least amount of characters, so I don't get where you're going with that. You shouldn't have to make rules but rules are life. I mean there is a reason that killing people is against the law. Now most people will say "hey I shouldn't kill this guy because then he would be dead and that's not very cool for him" Then you have the other people that would just kill someone because they got red on and they're a crip. Yes, you shouldn't have to make rules, but the truth is you do.

I did not post any pictures.

My posts did not break any rules.

they broke the bord format.
That post with the one letter that stretched about two pages off the screen? Thats the one.

Lecan did it first, twice.

No one said anything to him.

Just because someone else did something, doesn't mean everyone else should, take responsibilty for your actions.

Responsibility for what? Nothing said it was wrong.

Maybe to you it's breaking something, which if it is, should have been stated. On my screen it was just long line that stretched a single post. I can't tell what doing so effects because on my end I see absolutely no difference.

You singled me out for doing something multiple people were doing and did not state that doing so was wrong beforehand.

I was just going along with making random posts. The bare minimum and capped maximun are both possibilities of random.

I do take responsibility for my actions. Sculli asked what we thought made it ok and I replied that a mod doing something makes it ok for everyone else to do it. Plus it wasn't against the rules to do so. So basically everyone could have done it and there would of been no problems with it other than the forum getting lagged down.

QCDN standards apply to everyone alike. I came to that thread and saw one user, Westyle. I edited the post, just to see another one, same with with deeply nested quotes. I revoked Westyle's access, and started looking through the thread just to see a bunch of others doing the same thing. I locked the thread, I re-established Westyles access to not single one person out and that is where we are at now.

Oh wait, I did add a new rule to QCDN is celebrating its 2nd birthday, and you get an iPod Nano!

There was no rule against making a post with 150,000 characters of the same kind. Does that make it right to create such a post? In my opinion it doesn't. Obviously opinions differ, thus I added the rule of not making 150k posts to the contest.

Generally speaking; If the only way things can run is by me creating a rule for every possibility, then, quite frankly, it is simply not worth my time to put these things on.

All in all I probably spend 2 hours of my life on this particular issue that could have been easily avoided if people would just be a little more considerate toward others.

Not trying to be an ass or anything, I honestly didn't know it was hurting anything. I would of happily deleted them upon request.

I think that's one of the issues QCDN has, the way information is passed to users is unsatisfactory. Right now there are a bunch of threads all over the place that state some sort of policy. Then things like this come up and the issue with multiple 150k posts per thread gets addressed, but not added to anywhere where others can find it later unless they happen to stumble across this post.

For some time now I was planning to overhaul the posts in Guidelines for Forum Use Within as well as other forums (FB, AH, LS Recruiting, etc) and make a central location where users can find the most up-to-date information including an FAQ on board features and how to use them. I think I previously made a post about the FAQ a while back.

Anyway, I will make that a top priority so that it will be easy for users to find this info, including an explanation as to why certain things are either not allowed or discouraged.
