I've solo'd blu/bst to 51, nin/bst to 37 and war/bst(a little bit of partying) to 20 so far.

I'm curious how the rest of you who use /bst to solo deal with pets. When my pet gets low on health I /logout rather than try to kill it off and grab another one. It seems much safer that way. I call it "ghetto /leave".

I'd watch Ladykiki's video on DRK/BST. It's good, and it shows efficient soloing. If you're not up for that level of excellence, then ghetto leave (zoning or /logout) might be better for you.

The only job I went /BST for was WHM, and that was only from 72 to 75. Of course I had to get my club (Hexastrike) and staff (Spirit Taker) skills capped before I could do that effectively.

So far, I've...

Solo'd (mostly) blu to 75 using a combination of /nin (gob pets) and /bst (70+, and some magic learning soloing)

Solo'd (mostly) pld to 67 primarily using /bst. I took three or four parties, I think, and they went well. I just lack the time to party, and I don't see myself ever becoming a godly pld, so I just have fun with it.

I am considering soloing dnc to 75 with a mixture of /nin and /bst like I did with blu, but with dnc, I'm sure it'll mostly be /bst. So far I'm 22 and haven't had a party invite yet, but still don't have time to party anyway.

pld/bst has so far been the most enjoyable out of the above, however, soling gobbie pets was a lot of fun. Regular bst has less appeal with me now than before, but it is still a strong job, IMO. Also, blu/bst is just retarded easy for farming up beastment/kindred seals. Go to karakul camp as blu/bst, fight the karakuls, and just frenetic rip the chigs. You'll be shocked at how many seals you can grab up in an hour...

That is extremely safe but extremely unefficient. If your pet is weak you just might as well send it to your next intended pet and let that kill it off and then start trying to charm. As you feel more comfortable it is OK to progress onto other methods, but logout is "alright".

On a job with minimal/no HP recovery methods/damage avoidance, i.e. MNK (Chakra every 5 minutes doesn't cut it), WAR (you get Bloodbolts but you'll need some additional gear to land bolts, even though it should be OK judging by WAR's Marksmanship skill), SAM (Third Eye is like a shadow but....)... logout may be better. On DRK you can at least Drain most things (I drain-charm my mobs), likewise with BLM, THF you can avoid hits most of the time/

And yes as Crookedmidget said, refer to my DRK/BST demo video on this forum. I used "Heel" leaving, as long as you're careful the mob will never attack you.*

*This doesn't apply in the Leech-Colibri camp at 68. I think it's the water that makes the leech lose hate or something but I've not successfully did the Heel leave thing there I don't think...)

I am working on a guide/blog, I've got a few articles up and is nearly ready for release. Keep checking this forum I will post a link soon.

I leveled sam/bst, war/bst, drg/bst (don't get me wrong, I love my wyvern but...when /whm wasn't efficient enough), rng/bst, thf/bst. I find that it's all about engaging and performing actions at the correct HP % for your pet and for the target monster. Each job has different pet or monster HP % to engage with. This is my method though, dunno if it'll work for others. Logout method *is the safest though. :/ but you waste 30+ seconds and loose chain.

I usually go like this...
- PUT ON RERAISE FIRST
- charm pet
- sic pet onto monster
- rest if low on hp
- wait until pet is at 40%-85% HP (depends on which job, samurai you can wait until 40%, thief should engage at 85%)
- engage and fight along with pet, ws to finish monster off
- if pet died, you should have tp to rip apart your prey (prey usually die from a WS when they are at 10%--15% health)
- if pet didn't die, sic it onto the next pet you want to charm
- pet will take next pet to about 80-90%, that's fine
- sic your new pet onto monster
- rest hp while pet gets hate
- engage when pet is at 40%-65% life
- rinse and repeat

for samurai, you have demon arrows (or other arrows) availiable, demon arrows cut monster attack by a bit so your pet can survive longer while you rest. as a samurai you can take quite a few hits even if your pet dies (seigan+third eye), so in some situations you may find letting your pet die is more efficient. I usually didn't engage until 40% pet HP for samurai. (meditate helps a lot)

for ranger, you have bolts and arrows, stick an acid bolt and a demon arrow to cut defense and attack, bloody bolts are fine if you have enough gil to spend, but I find resting also works while pet gets hate, engaged at about 50% pet HP (and still got hate), but ranger can't take too many hits because they have paper defense, play it safe and engage at 50%-60% pet HP. I used barrage or a WS to finish off monster.

for warrior, also bolts and arrows, again, same deal with the bloody bolts, resting while pet gets hate works, usually engaged at 60%-70% pet HP

for dragoon, I actually didn't want to do /bst, but /whm was giving me a *very* inefficient time at 72. but, hey...it was fun to try...

for thief, it gave me a very difficult time because I wasn't used to jobs that...poked and did low damage. a lot more downtime and slower exp than heavier dd jobs (at least until you get a good weaponskill). resting and waiting for pet to get hate *does not* work with thief. you will have to engage when pet is at 85%+ HP or the pet will die before you can finish off monster. I find that bloody bolts are more efficient in this case. well, when I got into trouble I hit my flee button and ran my arse to the closest zone, so thief does have its perks. macro flee and use it for emergencies when you mischarm or get links ect; I have not tried thf/bst with a good weaponskill yet (dancing edge) it may work faster with a good weaponskill and higher level gear. (60+)

my next I'll probably try dark knight or paladin. I've actually tried smn/bst once...it was fun, but horribly in-efficient haha. solo-ing is fun. :P

SMN/BST is awesome man!

Except when I misjudged distances and don't shit out Fenrir in time. Then my spirits keep missing and don't get enough hate. And then I die.

Oh, to avoid the engaging problem, gimp your weapon a little. It does wonders, I normally engage right away depending on what my pet does on its first swing.
