I am currently 18 and seeking to move out, I live in Clarksville TN looking for an apt to stay in since college campus is too expensive(I'm going to APSU) like 1600-2629(least to most expensive) every semester or 4 months.

I dont want to live with my parents due to domestic conflicts of interest (glittlering generality there but in short, I need some space and freedom)

Those who know me personally know why I dont need to explain but the want is a bit great.

I have considered an apt but havent looked into pricing yet but I'm told that it can be fairly dangerous since people get jacked a lot, can anyone reccomend any advice? No job yet I've tried for 2 months they dont want me until I"m out of high school(I have a late birthday in case you're wondering).

thanks ahead of time, experience needed from those who've been through this stage before and esp those who live in my area=}

If you're getting an apartment you're going to need a roommate for it to be cheaper than the dorms. $500/month including utilities/cable is dirt cheap, and probably a tiny studio in a bad neighborhood. You'll need food on top of that (although dorm food is normally at least $10 a day, you'll probably be saving money there)

Honestly I recommend you live with your parents and commute, saving up your money. It's a whole lot easier to relocate for a job after you graduate if you have some money saved up. If not get a friend you wouldn't mind living with (or better yet a few friends, you can probably rent a decent 4 bedroom for under $300/person if you have 4 people) If that's not an option look on campus bulletin boards for people seeking a roommate.

Seconded. With just one other roommate you're making the rent much cheaper. A big college should have loads of people with the same idea, so you should have no problem finding people who want a place to share with someone else.

Good luck ^^

Moving out is great, but you don't want to be burdened with rent payments and bills when you start college. You'll have to work all the time to pay for a place, and your school work will suffer because of it. The best advice would be to just suck it up and live at home for at least your first two years of college. After that, you'll have no problem finding a roomate, and you'll have a better grasp on college life.

If you abolutely have to move out, make sure you get a roomate that you won't want to murder when he quits his job six months ago and sits around all day doing nothing, that lazy bastard. (Sorry, angry.)

Going to school and work full time is tough, and there's not many 18 y/o kids out there capable of handling the responsibility. Here's the bills you need to think of: Cable, Internet, Food, Gas, Phone, Rent, Car, Car Insurance, Renter's Insurance, College Books, College Tuition. Also, if it is not in-apartment washer/dryer then you need to think of the few bucks you'll spend a month at a laundromat. Either way, add that up... Unless you're making some decent money for an 18 y/o kid (like 14+ / hour) then you really not going to be able to afford the freedom you want. You sure as shit won't be able to live confortably, that's for sure. I'm paying all of those bills and more while going to college and work full time and honestly dude, it's tough. And I'm more than twice $/hour that i said above.

Have you looked into basement suites? I was able to rent one here (completely different area, but renting in Vancouver is not cheap) for $550/mo. I split the Hydro and Gas bills with the folks upstairs.

I was able to afford the place quite easily on my last job, minimum wage. However I was living with the woman back then too so that indubitably made it a lot easier. A roommate can save your wallet, but quite often will cost you some sanity and patience. Choose wisely.

I'd agree with Pasquale's statement in that if you can.... stay at home if you're not being required to pay rent or any other bills and save up what you can.

Freedom is nice, but as soon as you get those bills they're going to take over that happiness you may have found in your independance. Its possible that you can get yourself a job and get yourself your own place (I would honestly recommend getting your own appartment/suite without any room mates, but of course it sounds like where you live things are pretty expensive) but if you're going to be going to school, you'll definitely have a "full plate" in what you'll have to be worrying about.

You will know yourself best, so if you think you can take on the challenges of supporting yourself with all the bills you'll need to take care of, going to school and keeping up your grades then give it a try. But if you have any second thoughts, maybe you should consider staying at home a bit longer to save up in case when you do move out, if things don't turn out right you have some emergency money.

Best of luck in what you chose.

Well the job I will most likely get after high school is either going to be at Walmart for 7.75hr(i think) or Convergys which is 8 an hr, maybe I should stay in >_> but I think i need some sort of month vacation somewhere...

I go to college in the fall I'll stay with my parents I guess I love them but I can't stand them. I'm not really much of a social person irl, the roomate thing I'll look into though.

Clarksville is a bit saturated in the job market I highly doubt I'll be able to get a 14+hr job

You should think more positively about this. Sounds like ur not giving yourself enough credit here where credit is due. I know ur a good guy Khid but selling yourself short like this isn't helpin ya. Think positively about it and watch how things are gonna start fallin in your lap soon. You just gotta have a good outlook on this.

: )

Man am I glad I read this thread. I like Khidir am 18. I can stand my parents slightly the kicker is I am going to a Junior College first for gen eds and get an associates degree in business then look into a school that meets my needs for what I really wish to do which is translation. So at some point I'll be needing to find a place to live. I don't want to end up like some people I know who are still living with their parents and are almost 21.

I lived with my parents all through university (graduating this year) and I recommend it, if you can get along with your parents. I wish I could continuing commuting next yearwhen I go for another year of school at another college because of the amount of money it's saved me.Only thing downfall is you have to consider the money that's going to be going into car insurance, maintenance, gas and how long the drive from the house and your school is.

There's nothing wrong with taking advantage of the situation and living with your parents through college Romper. Shit, I'm 22 and I just recently moved out. Then again, the only reason I didn't move out sooner was because I blew my money way too easily. I've been good with my money the last 6 months and it's pretty damn shocking how much you can save. Even with my added bills now, I'm saving money. I'm paying out like $2200 a month total, not counting my tuition (paying each semester in cash), and I'm still saving money. I just work my ass off to make the money, and work my ass off to succeed in school. Like I said, if you're not in a situation to make a lot of money then I recommend staying out of it. All you're going to do is hamstring yourself and get yourself completely stressed out.

I think that you will find that your parents will let up on you a bit after you start college. A large part of development for your age is role identification, and you are ready to run out there and define yourself. At 18 you don't have to do everything right away, even though it might feel like you do. If your home setting isn't dangerous: spirit-filled christians, drugs, drunks, people wielding knives, and lamps flying at your head, I'd stick it out if I could. Good luck.

parents pay for car insurance atm 330 or so every 3 months they tend to take care of everything

My parents treat me like an idiot due to my bad memory basically in the most simplest of terms...when I'm not a lot of people would've gone crazy but I'm a bit on the patient and calm side but it's running out.

thanks for the advice its something I'll have to consider.

Shit, I was on my own as far as bills when I turned 16. You got it easy bud; don't be in a rush to make life difficult on yourself.

I so know the feeling.

When I first moved out I was making a little over 9 bucks an hour and I had plenty of money to spend. I paid $400 a month in rent, and that was it. That included tv, internet, phone, utilities, rent. The rest of my paycheck I spent on gas, food, pot, and savings. Had all my car shit taken care of and I didn't really have any bills, so I lived pretty comfortably.

If you're in college I would still recomend staying with your parents, unless the commute is an hour+. Saving up some cash and making sure all your car bills are taken care of is a good idea too. Hell making sure all your bills are taken care of before you leave is a good idea, but I don't know how much you have to pay for school so maybe not.
